A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-31-18
What’s Happening: “It hasn’t happened since 1982 (35+ years), but the Moon will be doing something special in the sky tonight…especially if you live in Hawaii or Alaska…less so on the West Coast…the rest of us: not so much. A Blue Moon occurs every time you have a second Full Moon in a month (hence the rarity statement of ‘once-in a-Blue-Moon’); a Supermoon is another rarity: at Apogee (or close approach – this moon will be only 223,820 miles from earth – 236,000 is average); a Lunar Total Eclipse, another rarity, occurs when all three, the Sun-Moon-and Earth line up – a Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Moon enters Earth’s shadow; all three occur simultaneously only very rarely…TONIGHT! Knee-Jerk Response: “Should I hide under the kitchen table?”
Biblical Response: “No, unless you are of the ‘Chicken Little’ persuasion (always thinking the sky is falling!) Seriously, unless you are in a good viewing area you won’t notice much difference…of course, pointing out these facts might make you look intelligent…and nerdy.”
“Christians? Do we believe in celestial events. Sure, there are lots of them recorded in Scripture (Joel 2:30, Dan. 6:27, Ps. 18:13, etc.). Often, big events in history are accompanied by signs and wonders – I’m thinking, for example, about the ‘star in the East’ the wisemen followed (Matt. 2:2). How should we respond to these celestial wonders? Awe, not fear (Luke 2:9-10),”
Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray: “Heavenly Father, help us to see celestial events as You having everything under control; in Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent
