CLARITY – 4-5-18 Costly Free Speech

Costly Free Speech

What’s Happening:  “You do some things and they don’t matter…you do others, and they do. At least that’s what Juli Briskman found when she gave the middle-finger gesture to a passing Trump motorcade and promptly got fired by her employer, government contractor Akima, LLC. Now she’s suing for wrongful termination (https://www.yahoo.com/news/woman-fired-flipping-off-trump-230233890.html). Briskman was quoted as saying, ‘I filed this lawsuit against my former employer today because I believe that Americans should not be forced to choose between their principles and their paychecks…’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What’s this country coming to if you can’t express yourself freely?”

Biblical Response:  “Civility, maybe… Of course, the First Amendment guarantees your right to free speech and hand gestures can be argued to be a form of that, but there’s nothing in the Constitution or its Amendments that says that free speech is ‘free.’… there may be consequences for giving vent to your emotions. That’s why a civil society learns discretion. I have no problem with Ms. Briskman showing her displeasure…as long as she is willing to bear the consequences…unintended or otherwise.”

“Christians? We should have issue with Ms. Briskman’s actions for two reasons: 1)Her expression was vulgar; Scripture is plain about that (Eph. 4:29); and 2) She is attempting to evade responsibility for her action (Matt. 12:36). Actually, I have been guilty for speaking ‘out of turn,’ for saying something inappropriate for my audience or my situation…my father used to tell me, “Your mouth is going to get you into more trouble than your mouth will ever get you out of.” And I’ve had to repent of some of the things I’ve said and done. However, I see no contrition here.”

“When Peter and Paul were hauled before the Jewish leaders for speaking in the Name of Jesus (a convicted and sentenced blasphemer) and for healing, they were threatened and told never to speak in this Name again…which order they promptly disobeyed (Acts 4). Freedom isn’t free, but sometimes it’s worth the price. If there is no price we are either condemned to incivility or injustice.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to exercise discretion, for by taking Your Name, we have become Your representatives (2 Cor. 5:20); in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 4-4-18 Clean Sweep

Clean Sweep

What’s Happening:  “You’d be ecstatic, too, if all 20 top schools you applied to accepted you…with a full scholarship!  17-year-old Michael Brown of Lamar High School in Texas was shocked (so were his parents) to discover his academic prowess had paid off. Of course with an ACT of 34 of 36, an SAT of 1540 of 1600 and a GPA of 4.68, nobody was completely surprised (https://www.yahoo.com/news/teenager-accepted-20-top-ranked-175040558.html). ‘He actually earned it,’ his mother told the New York times. ‘I always knew Mike would get into a good school. I always knew he’d get good scholarship support. But I never imagined this!’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So what’s the big deal?”

Biblical Response:  “With the average graduate ending school with a debt of $28,950 (and that’s if you went to a public or non-profit school), it’s a HUGE deal to get a full-ride offer from an ivy league private school! (let alone get 20 offers). Of course, it’s not the opportunity, it’s what you do with the opportunity…that makes the difference.”

“Christians? I don’t know where Michael is with his faith, but more Christians need this kind of opportunity. If you ask pretty much anybody who the greatest mind was, they’d answer: Isaac Newton (the discoverer of the Law of Gravity, the inventor of Calculus). But most people don’t know he wrote more books on theology than academics or mathematics or science. We need more Christian intellectuals. Elitists think worshipping God is for the stupid lower class. But the Scripture attests: ‘The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God.’ (Ps. 14:1 KJV)”

CLARITY – 4-3-18 Safety is Costly

Safety is Costly

What’s Happening:  “If you thought the ‘Caravan’ referred to a Dodge, you were partially correct, but it’s not the American car brand…rather, it’s over 1,200 migrants trying to ‘dodge’ the U.S.’s LEGAL asylum system and gain admission to the U.S. by joining up with Alex Mensing’s Pueblos Sin Fronteras (People Without Borders) group. It’s not sitting so well with Trump’s CBP (http://5newsonline.com/2018/04/01/immigrant-caravan-heading-to-us-mexico-border-sparks-trumps-concern/).  Trump tweeted, ‘Border Patrol Agents are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch & Release. Getting more dangerous. ‘Caravans’ coming. Republicans must go to Nuclear Option to pass tough laws NOW. NO MORE DACA DEAL,’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Everybody deserves a safe home.”

Biblical Response:  “Really? I can’t even find that in the Bible. In fact, the only ‘safe’ home Man ever knew (the Garden of Eden) he got kicked out of (Gen. 3:22-24). The right to ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’ is not in the Constitution (it’s in the Declaration of Independence). It is listed as an ‘inalienable’ right, but it also said that ‘to secure these rights’ governments are formed; that includes the governments of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador from whence the majority of these refugees hail. Our rights were secured by the blood of patriots. Why not theirs?”

“Christians? Sacrifice is always the cost of freedom (John 8:36; Rom. 5:8). I’m afraid if the refugees are willing to make the sacrifice of the trek, we may be taking them from a sacrifice for which their heritage back in their respective homes will reap great benefits, We certainly have.”

CLARITY – 4-2-18 When More is Less

CLARITY

When More is Less

What’s Happening:  “School walkouts have happened in West Virginia, are happening in Oklahoma, and likely will happen in Arizona. In West Virginia, and adjusted for inflation. some $12,512 is spent PER STUDENT while teacher salaries fell by three percent. Where is the money going? The bulk of it is for non-teaching expenses…and without attendant increases in student outcomes. Some say: more spent…less bought (http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2018/04/01/why-are-teachers-striking-answer-may-surprise.html). Quoting Fox News Benjamin Scafidi: ‘In my research, I have found that the surge of non-teaching staff in public schools has been occurring across America since 1950 and, at least since 1992, to no measurable positive relationship between this increased staffing and student outcomes…’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Sure glad I’m not a teacher!”

Biblical Response:  “With some class sizes over sixty, no salary increases in many years, and some teachers teaching from 60-year-old textbooks it’s no wonder. Yet we keep spending more… but keep getting less. Ask any teacher…it’s not going to them. Maybe this is why homeschooling and private schooling is growing in popularity. Of course, not everyone can homeschool or seek private education…it would require, in many cases, to settle for a lesser lifestyle…and a change in priorities.”

“Christians? We know (or we are supposed to) that only parents are really ultimately responsible for their children’s education (Eph. 6:4), whether you homeschool, private school, or publicly instruct. Paying those who educate for us necessitates our being involved in financing the process (paying our taxes or tuition) AND making sure those moneys are appropriately spent. We might rather someone else have that oversight, but that is not what Scripture teaches.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, make us good stewards. If that requires effort, give us the strength to attend boring PTA meeting, vote in school board elections, and care enough to express our opinion, even  when it’s unpopular; in Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent
