Talk About Defamation!

 

What’s Happening:  “When Jarrod Ramos, 38, killed five and wounded two at the Capital Gazette, a news outlet he had sued in 2012 for defamation, he was obviously not thinking about how his reputation might suffer by taking matters into his own hands (https://www.yahoo.com/news/capital-gazette-shooting-suspect-sued-023352130.html). ‘A lawyer would almost certainly have told him not to proceed with this case,’ the court wrote in its opinion following the appeal. ‘It reveals a fundamental failure to understand what defamation law is and, more particularly, what defamation law is not,’ quotes Nick Vasser in his HuffPost article.”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Isn’t defamation about reputation, anyway? Instead of folks wondering about Ramos’ character, this way he removed all doubt!”

 

Biblical Response:  “Anybody who loses…twice…and represents himself…is not sane anyway (which is underscored by his vengeful heinous act). I guess the left won’t be crying for more gun control on this one (he used a shotgun…not a handgun or any illegally purchased long gun). What can keep anyone safe from such murderous intents? Probably nothing…realistically.  Nothing short of massive world-wide revival will make everyone realize that vengeance is the Lord’s. (Rom. 12:19).”

 

“Christians? We believe that family is the answer for most feelings of being wronged…a good father and mother will teach their son that time and truth (and patience) sort out most of life’s inequities… Of course, he could have gotten the same input in Sunday school. Maybe one of the prison ministries will reach him. One can always pray. Even murder is forgivable…by Someone who was made on ‘no reputation’ (Phil. 2:7-8).”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us reach out to those who feel they have been wronged, teaching them to depend on Your final justice; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a proud Democratic Socialist, defeated Democratic incumbent (10 terms!) Joe Crowley in an upset in Tuesday’s New York primary and is proof positive the Bernie-Sanders-like shift to the left of the Democrat Party is here to stay (https://www.thenation.com/article/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-wins-democratic-socialist-21st-century-vision/). Quoting John Nichols” article, ‘Matt Blizek, the elections-mobilization director for MoveOn, extended on that theme, saying: “These results are also a shot across the bow of the Democratic establishment in Washington: a young, diverse, and boldly progressive Resistance Movement isn’t waiting to be anointed by the powers that be. Americans from all walks of life who demand change are taking reins of power and showing the Democratic Party what its future looks like.”’”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “It used to be ‘a chicken in every pot’, now it’s free health-care, free higher education, and a guarantee of housing…What will they promise next?”

 

Biblical Response:  “True, it seems that promises rule the day, but promises made and promises delivered might be two different things…especially when it comes to paying for everything. Maybe, kicking the can down the road or just turning up the printing presses a little won’t solve the problem, but as long as folks are willing to believe it will…perhaps that’s the problem. Besides, it’s not a matter of opinion.”

 

“Christians? Oh, we SAY we believe differently…but often we vote the same way. The truth is, who doesn’t want free health-care or free education?  But life has a tendency to bring us all back to reality. What does that scripture say? ‘For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.’  (2 Thess. 3:10 KJV) Socialism is not a matter of opinion, no matter how good it sounds.

What’s Happening:  “D.C. and the nation are all abuzz with the retirement of Justice Kennedy from SCOTUS, the possible replacement by Kavanaugh…or Lee…or Fox Commentator, Judge Jeanine (just kidding?). Regardless of the pick, the nature of the court is likely to change (https://www.yahoo.com/news/appellate-judge-d-c-circuit-seen-early-favorite-trumps-supreme-court-shortlist-203121934.html). ‘Donald Trump Jr. retweeted a post about her as a possible nominee, adding ‘This would be pretty awesome,’ but with emoticons suggesting he meant it as a joke, ’ says an article by Chris Wilson of Yahoo News.”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Didn’t the Republicans want Obama to wait until after the election to replace Scalia? Aren’t we also coming up on an election?”

 

Biblical Response:  “Yes, but this is a midterm election, not a Presidential one. Besides, with as many Democratic Senators as are up for re-election in states carried by Trump (many by double digits), there is not likely to be a change in the confirmation results. No doubt, if the President sticks with the 25 from which Gorsuch was chosen (and he said he would), the next justice is likely to make the court more conservative. In the tasty words of Barack Hussein Obama, ‘Elections have consequences.’ I’m sorry if my gloat is showing.”

 

“Christians? 56 million souls (roughly the number of abortions since Roe v. Wade) cry out for change (John 10:10).”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help President Trump to choose wisely and our Senate to sound off resolutely; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “Not only did the ‘Travel Ban’ get upheld, and the majority ruled that conservative pregnancy clinics did not have to recommend abortion providers, but the infamous Korematsu ruling (legalizing Japanese interment camps in 1942) was officially repudiated…though it didn’t keep the minority from citing the alleged similarities (https://www.politico.com/story/2018/06/26/supreme-court-overturns-korematsu-673846). ‘”The dissent’s reference to Korematsu … affords this Court the opportunity to make express what is already obvious: Korematsu was gravely wrong the day it was decided, has been overruled in the court of history, and — to be clear — ‘has no place in law under the Constitution,.,’ Chief Justice Roberts wrote.”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So history was wrong…how does that matter today?”

 

Biblical Response:  “Acknowledging that history was wrong may be a HUGE deal…at least now we can learn from the mistakes of the past. If you don’t ever make that acknowledgement, error becomes precedent…that’s when writer and philosopher George Santayana’s famous quote (‘condemned to repeat it’[the past]) comes into play. ”

 

“Christians? The rulings of SCOTUS are important, but the Final Judge will have the final say (Rev. 19:11).”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while opinions are like noses…everybody’s got one, Your opinion is fact…whether we call it so or not. Help us to submit to Your rulings: in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “The rest of the story…not only was Sarah Huckabee-Sanders ejected from the Red Hen restaurant (which you could argue was the owner trying to keep her employees and other patrons sheltered from controversy), but the owner of the Red Hen organized a protest at the restaurant across the street that was then attended (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/new-development-in-red-hen-story-huckabee-says-owner-tailed-sarahs-family-after-she-left/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=CTBreaking&utm_campaign=breaking&utm_content=conservative-tribune). ‘By the way, Laura’ former Governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee, said in a radio interview with Laura Ingraham, ‘There’s a part of the story that hasn’t been told; you’re going to be the first to hear it. Once Sarah and her family left, of course she was asked to vacate. Sarah just went home.They had sort of had enough….’”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “‘Kind of ironic’ is an understatement, huh?”

 

Biblical Response:  “Right…but not surprising. Intolerance may mask itself as tolerant, but the truth usually comes out in the end. Are we, as Americans, called to tolerance? Yes. But the restaurant owner has the right of free speech, too. Sometimes, that may mean ejection from a restaurant. Sometimes it may even lead to a peaceful protest…but in no case should it rise to the level of harassment. I cannot be the judge. I was not there. But I dare say it was judged.”

 

“Christians? We are called to be tolerant, but to stand for our principles, too (Rom. 12:18; Heb. 12:14) Where do we draw the line? Let the Holy Spirit guide you.”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, make us discerning purveyors of Your truth; while we want to stand up when we should, we don’t want to lay down when we shouldn’t: in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “The Red Hen, the small restaurant in Lexington, Virginia who booted out Sarah Huckabee-Sanders over the administration’s political stands, say they would do it again…ostensibly for 15 more minutes of fame…which, as this article states, they might need. They join the ranks of Peter Fonda, Tom Arnold, Alec Baldwin, et al, et nauseum (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/restaurant-owner-who-booted-sarah-sanders-basks-in-publicity-issues-statement/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=conservative-brief-CT&utm_campaign=dailyam&utm_content=conservative-tribune). ‘This feels like the moment in our democracy when people have to make uncomfortable actions and decisions to uphold their morals,’ Wilkinson said.’ Then she, no doubt, agrees with a certain baker of wedding cakes, right?”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “That probably never entered her calculation.”

 

Biblical Response:  “Probably not….still, I won’t begrudge her the right to make her ‘free-speech’ stand…if that’s what she was doing…I don’t presume to know her mind. Sarah and those of her political persuasion should not be shocked, however. There seems to be a polarization of the country. And probably not over important issues…though some are. Unfortunately, we have a public that just likes to pick a scab. They don’t really care what the issue is, they just enjoy the fight.”

 

“Christians? Two things. 1) Don’t pick a fight just to be fighting. Rather ,seek peace, if possible (Rom. 12:18; Heb. 12:14). But not peace at any price. 2) ‘Don’t be surprised, friends, when the world hates you. This has been going on a long time.’ (1 John 3:13) Persecution is our lot in life. Sure, we should enact laws against it…then there’s the First Amendment, too… but if we think it’s going to end, surely we kid ourselves!”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be patient with those who express their angst in ways we wish they wouldn’t; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “Appearing on this week’s TIME magazine’s cover is a 2-year-old Honduran girl crying up to a photoshopped image of President Trump, but the deception doesn’t stop there. Further investigation reveals she wasn’t separated from the mother who kidnapped her from her unsuspecting father (who is still in Honduras)…and the mother has been deported before (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/truth-about-girl-on-cover-destroys-time-magazines-credibility-she-was-never-separated/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=CTBreaking&utm_campaign=breaking&utm_content=conservative-tribune). ‘On July 9, 2013, she was transferred to ICE ERO custody. On July 18, 2013, Sanchez was removed to Honduras under expedited removal,’ according to an ICE statement.”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Oops!’”

 

Biblical Response:  “That would be my response, too… except many people believe the Fake News the media keeps pumping out. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want what is happening on our southern border any more than the next guy. It’s just that I think the problem is different AND the solution is different. What is the problem if not separating families? The problem is trying to enter the U.S. illegally. The solution: immigration reform. People willingly risk their lives and the lives of their family and try to enter illegally because we have not made it easy for them to do it legally…but dealing in falsehood is not the answer! (John 8:32)”

 

“Christians? Again, what a great opportunity! I haven’t heard of any churches who have opened up their facilities for housing…or any individuals who have opened up their homes (of course that may not be judged newsworthy or fit the media’s narrative). So, if there’s anyone out there who needs warm and dry housing, I have a couch. Oh, by the way….we will be praying over our food, and my wife teaches English at school.”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to extend a hand of Christian compassion to those who truly seek asylum…or help us not to claim that moniker as our own; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “The House of Representative just passed (narrowly – 213-211) an $867 Billion complicated farm bill that altered some of the current Food Stamp program’s (SNAP) provisions that causes those able to work more. The Senate, however, has their own version (https://www.yahoo.com/news/u-house-approves-farm-bill-major-food-stamps-201401228–business.html). ‘Farm bills are massive, providing funding for diverse programs including food aid, crop subsidies, rural development, conservation and efforts to stem the opioid crisis in rural communities. The last bill came into effect in 2014, two years behind schedule, after extensive congressional negotiations and partisan fights over food stamps,’ the Yahoo News article reads.”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Doesn’t the Bible say, ‘No work, no eat?’”

 

Biblical Response:  “Kind of…I mean, you can infer that from Prov. 21:25-26 and 1 Thess. 3:6, but compassion should rule the day (there some who simply cannot work). However, when you provide no incentive for folks to do the hard thing, they won’t. It would be great if human nature was always industrious, but we usually follow the path of least resistance…let’s face it…we’re basically lazy.”

 

“Christians? We have the same tendencies of every man. The difference is that we now have a new nature (2 Cor. 5:17)…and we have a Helper (John 14:16, 26); in ourselves, we are just not that responsible.”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be compassionate and not to ‘“game” the system when we are often quite capable; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “Meanwhile, as if border troubles, denuclearization talks, trade wars, and the legalization of marijuana in Canada were not enough to be dealing with, Israel just hit targets in Gaza, in response to Hamas sending 45 rockets crashing into Israeli neighborhoods, in response to Israel’s targeting of kite and balloon launch sites (Palestinians have been sending over the border incendiary devices),which was in response to…it seems the world is busy (http://www.siouxlandproud.com/news/israel-says-it-struck-hamas-after-rocket-attacks-from-gaza/1250264765). ‘Just imagine living in fear..’ said Cabinet Minister Naftali Bennett.”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Just more reasons to realize things are out of control!”

 

Biblical Response:  “You mean, just more fodder for prayer. ‘In the world, you shall have tribulation…(John 16:33)…but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world.’As long as we’re in this world,we’ll have to deal with the chaos of this world. Thankfully, ‘Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.’ (1 John 4:4)

 

“Christians? We realize that there are two competing agendas (John 10:10)…and which one will prevail.”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to see all the chaos around us and rejoice…not only do we have the answer, we know the Answer…and better still, He knows us; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “There are true asylum seekers and pretenders…as least so says one law enforcement source who interviewed children whose parents have been detained for illegally crossing the border (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/report-illegal-immigrant-children-strangely-know-very-little-about-parents/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-CT&utm_campaign=dailypm&utm_content=conservative-tribune). ‘The law enforcement source cast doubt on the asylum claims many illegal immigrants appear to parrot, pointing out that the vast majority of those detained are  actively trying to evade authorities.Only upon their detention do they offer that same exact credible fear of returning home, most of whom say the phrase in the exact same scripted way,’ says the Daily Caller’s report.”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Surely, the adults wouldn’t use innocent children as a ruse!”

 

Biblical Response:  “Surely, they would…and do! Let’s not be naive. Good behavior is reserved for those who use a LEGAL Port of Entry. The so-called ‘no-tolerance’ policy of the Trump Administration should be the practice of all law enforcement regarding all laws…I sure don’t pay them to look the other way! Should we as Americans be compassionate toward innocent children? Absolutely! But let’s also not be hypocritical…those aborted are separated from their parents, too.

 

“Christians? What an opportunity! It would likely receive little media coverage, but every church in a border state ought to volunteer their facilities and care for the children of detainees….and that’s not to absolve Christian families from making their homes available long-term (Matt. 7:12).”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to demonstrate our love in action…but also our discernment; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
