CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-15-18

Lessons of History

What’s Happening: “Nearly six years ago (2013) a little ripple was all that was made when gun sales were banned from all but government entities in Venezuela. Today, there may be some regret…and gun toting populaces might take note. Venezuela now has the highest homicide rate in the world. Some 90+ per 100,000…compare that with the U.S.’s rate of 4.9 per 100,000 (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/country-crashes-burns-venezuelans-offer-chilling-warning-gun-grabbers/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=conservative-brief-CT&utm_campaign=dailyam&utm_content=conservative-tribune). ‘Guns would served as a vital pillar to remaining a free people, or at least able to put up a fight.’ lamented Javier Vanegas a teacher who fled Venezuela recently.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “The fewer the guns, the fewer the gun crimes.”

Biblical Response:  “I know the conventional mantra, but that simply is not borne out historically. Could it be that man’s fallen nature means those who want guns will find a way to get them? And exert the undue leverage of evil over the law-abiding? You can’t confiscate enough…if it’s not guns, it’s knives…or machetes…or vehicles…or toxins, etc. You can’t incarcerate fast enough…or put enough cops on the street…or write enough laws. What is the solution? Until you have a universal nature change…which may not happen this side of heaven…the best way that’s been found is to give everyone the power to defend themselves…(and that’s to say nothing about the restraint of a tyrannical government as power corrupts)”

“Christians? While we should be in the business of saving souls, it might not hurt to have the ability to save some bodies, too (Luke 22:36-38)!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while none of us wants violence, those that threaten it must be met appropriately. Give us wisdom and discretion; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-14-18

Mass Extortion

What’s Happening: “In a twist no one saw coming, the caravaners demanded a $50,000 payment PER MIGRANT…kind of a pay-or-we’ll-storm-your-border threat that sounds more like a ransom demand than an alternative offered to avoid deportation. What will they do if the U.S. pays up? Go home. Sounds like people fleeing persecution in their home country to me…NOT! (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/outrageous-caravanners-offer-return-home-us-pays-50000/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=CTBreaking&utm_campaign=breaking&utm_content=conservative-tribune) ‘Two groups of Central American migrants made separate marches on the U.S. Consulate in Tijuana Tuesday, demanding that they be processed through the asylum system  more quickly and in greater numbers,’ The San Diego Tribune reported.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Surely, they aren’t responsible for where they were born!”

Biblical Response:  “Surely, we aren’t responsible either! Maybe if they stayed and fought for a peaceable and prosperous society they wouldn’t have come here in the first place. Sure, it may cost them some blood and sacrifice. It certainly did our ancestors.”

“Christians? Freedom isn’t free. No one knows that better than we do. The Good News? It’s already been paid for (Heb. 9:12). And it cost a whole lot more than $50,000!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to find the balance between current compassion and future justice…and realize destiny is way above our paygrade; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”a

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-13-18

Say It’s Not So!

What’s Happening: “Parents lament, ‘Surely not…’ Unfortunately, it’s true. In an article posted after five pm yesterday, Montana Western University now threatens to punish incivility if it even get to the phase of – wait for it – ‘mean facial expressions.’According to the Student Code of Conduct manual, students may suffer ‘suspension, or in extreme cases expulsion’ (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/thought-police-public-universitys-rules-now-prohibit-offensive-facial-expressions/?ff_source=Email&ff_medium=newsletter-CT&ff_campaign=dailypm&ff_content=conservative-tribune). What about free speech? States Laura Beltz of the Foundation for Individual Rights, ‘The policy states that student must promote an atmosphere of civility and that their discussions should never become ‘mean, nasty, or vindictive’…’ This is college, not kindergarten!”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “They are just trying to manage offense.”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, but is that even possible? What kind of world would it be if you could do that? Would you want to live in it? Maybe George Orwell was right! Thought police may have already arrived. God help us!”

“Christians? We live in a fallen world. Without a nature change offense is inevitable. The only cure is Jesus (of course, He is called ‘the Rock of Offense’ – Rom. 9:33). Are we to offend? We should try not to (Rom. 12:18), but all do not play by that rule. We are not to be surprised. The world hated Jesus long before it hated us (Jn 15:25; 17:45).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, may we enter conflict with a word of forgiveness on our lips and a kind word in our minds; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 12-12-18 Profitability Not the Measure

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-12-18

Profitability Not the Measure

What’s Happening: “Google, which is openly and admittedly anti-Christian, has recently approved  ‘Smart Pakem,’ an app for outing Xenophobes toward Muslims, in all countries where Sharia law is legal. Indonesia, which reports as many as 207 Million Muslims, launched this app last month. Whatever happened to free speech? Oh, I see, it’s not profitable (https://steadfastandloyal.com/social-issues/approves-app-that-allows-to-report-blasphemy/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=subscriber_id:1583395&utm_campaign=WikiLeaks%20vs%20The%20Democratic%20National%20Committee%20Is%20Going%20To%20be%20HUGE). Isn’t that hypocritical? So? Apparently profitability determines right and wrong.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Get with the times.”

Biblical Response:  “Just because something is contemporary…or doable…or profitable…doesn’t make it right. A lot of things are possible, but that doesn’t make them recommendable. Apparently Google has opted for profitability as the final arbiter of morality. It is expedient to the company’s bottom line, so it must be pursued. This kind of philosophy will not serve them…or their shareholders…or us…well. Oh sure, it might be beneficial in the short term, but not ultimately.”

“Christians? What is our final arbiter? Conscience? No, that is deceitful (Isaiah 53:6). A man will do what seems right in his own eyes. The leading of God? If it was truly God…however, many have said they were led of God,…to justify despicable things! The only faithful arbiter is the inerrant Word of God. Not verses isolated from historical or circumstantial context, but an original-language rendering that takes those realities into account. His leading will never violate His Word. And is therefore simple, direct, and clear.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, may we be ever vigilant when it come to supporting activities that seem right…and use the right measuring line when it comes to judging;; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 12-8-18 Road’s End

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-8-18

Road’s End

What’s Happening: “Congress just kicked the government shutdown can a little further down the road this week – actually, till December 21 – choking over the southern border wall and being distracted by the funeral of former President George H. W. Bush. Will Pelosi cave? Will Schumer cave? Probably not…but then there’s Trump’s signature too (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/12/06/government-shutdown-congress-oks-temporary-spending-bill-keep-lights/2228449002/). Quoting from the USA Today article: ‘The extension buys lawmakers more time to reach a consensus on spending but also raises the possibility that a budget showdown – and, potentially, a partial government shutdown – could happen just days before Christmas.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Nobody wants a shutdown,”

Biblical Response:  “That’s what Pelosi and Schumer are counting on. We’ll see. These threats are always fun to watch. Well, maybe not for those who depend on at-risk government services…on which many may have become too dependent.”

“Christians? It’s a good thing our TRUE source is God. Oh sure, He may use the U.S. government (via Social Security, Medicare or Disability), or doctors (who only treat – God alone is in the healing business), or the Stock Market (or a wise financial counselor, a trust, or inflating values), but ultimately God is the Orchestrator. The end of the road? Only God knows (Isaiah 55:8-9; Prov. 3:5-6).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to find the balance between self-responsibility and dependence on You; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 12-7-18 Making the Naughty List

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-7-18

Making the Naughty List

What’s Happening: “Nikki Haley, as U. S. Ambassador to the U.N., proposed an official resolution of condemnation of the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas yesterday…and it failed to get the ⅔ majority required. She may be leaving her post at year’s end, but you can rest assured that the U.S. (and Israel) is taking note of who supported the resolution and who did not (https://www.yahoo.com/news/u-fails-win-enough-support-u-n-condemn-234533621.html). Hamas has lobbed dozens of missiles at Israel lately. ‘Before the General Assembly can credibly advocate compromise and reconciliation between the Palestinians and Israel, it must on record, unambiguously and unconditionally, condemn Hamas terrorism,’ Haley said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Once again the U.N. proves its irrelevancy.”

Biblical Response:  “Yep…but it had help (Kuwait proposed a resolution that made the condemnation measure a ⅔ vote, instead of a simple majority). Of course, Israel would object, and nobody fears loss when it votes against it…but the U.S. might not give as much or any largesse to those who voted against them: a threat that could really mean something.”

“Christians? We are against any violence (Heb. 12:14) that is random and kills innocents. The Palestinians might argue that all Israelis are guilty of prejudice against them. That’s like the frog telling the leaf it is green (the political correctness police accuse those who use a more familiar phrase of racism); they call for the destruction of Israel. Forget the US., it’s not a good idea to get on God’s bad side,”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, let us never get weary of doing what is right…or condemning those who do wrong; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 12-6-18 Wisdom Defeats Foolishness

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-6-18

Wisdom Defeats Foolishness

What’s Happening: “In a series of consequences of poor decisions, two inmates escaped from the Pickens County Prison in South Carolina and one was shot and killed when he entered the home of a woman with a concealed carry permit. It only took one shot (to the head) to subdue the orange attired inmate. The escape was ‘premeditated’ reported Sheriff Rick Clark (https://www.yahoo.com/news/woman-concealed-carry-permit-fatally-195415273.html). ‘This is the shining example of what this lady did. She took the time to get her CWP (Concealed Weapon Permit) and set herself up to be able to protect herself and not be harmed, killed or raped or whatever. She came out on the good end of this and the bad guy didn’t,’ said Sheriff Clark.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “He picked the wrong house.”

Biblical Response:  “You think?! Some reaping is permanent (Gal. 6:7). Should the lady feel bad? Perhaps. The dead inmate will not have the opportunity to repent…and that is regrettable. Still, it is more regrettable for him than for her. Actions taken have consequences…some of them deadly. Sure, he picked the wrong house, but his mistakes mark a series of bad decisions or he wouldn’t have been in prison in the first place.”

“Christians? Living in a fallen world brings some, out of a motive of self-preservation, to get a concealed carry permit. Is taking someone’s life wrong? Doesn’t the Scripture say we are not to kill? (Exodus 20:13). Actually, it says not to commit murder (the taking of innocent blood). The Scripture really says ‘there is a time to kill’ (Eccl. 3:3). Of course, the death of any individual ends the chance for them repenting and being restored to right relationship with the Father…and that is sad. Still, what happened is an example of wisdom triumphing over foolishness.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, may we find the balance between being prepared and trusting You with our future; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 12-5-18 Tariffying

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-5-18

Tariffying

What’s Happening: “The stock market fell almost 800 points yesterday making it the biggest sell-off since October 10…mostly on fears of tariffs: ours on China ($250 Billion) and China on us ($110 Billion). Also, the starting date of the 90-day pause in those tariffs, agreed by Presidents Trump and Xi at the G20 Summit, was corrected from  January 1 to begin December 1 (https://www.cnbc.com/2018/12/04/stock-market-dow-futures-fall-amid-us-china-trade-deal-skepticism.html) ‘ From a math standpoint, this is screaming buy. The only concern I have is people are going to start getting irrational. That’s when the emotional trading starts taking place,’ said Steven Dudash, president of IHT Wealth.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Sell!”

Biblical Response:  “That’s just the kind of emotionalism that a lot of financial experts are warning against. Sure, you can probably find those that urge the other way…maybe just as many, but I’m cautioning against fear. The Scripture says, “Fear hath torment” (1 John 4:18). Of course, fear of danger can also help you escape. But we are not called to react, but act. Will the U.S. and China settle their differences? Yes…eventually. Isn’t it better to leave the timing of that to God?”

“Christians? To be ruled by fear is just what the enemy wants. To be ruled by faith is what God wants. Is it ever time to sell? Of course…just not out of fear. Better to do things slowly, at the prompting of the Holy Spirit.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give us the wisdom and attentiveness, financially, to invest and divest at Your leading, not from the basis of fear; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 12-4-18 25 is Low Unless You’re One

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-4-18

25 is Low Unless You’re One

What’s Happening: “The number of those missing (just in the Camp Fire in Paradise, California) about two weeks ago was 1,200…today it is 25. Now, 88 killed is still horrific, but the reduction in the number of missing may be the only “good news” in a wildfire that destroyed a community of 27,000. Some blame the fire on equipment problems that PG& E, Corp. reported near the wildfire’s origin at about the same time it started, but no one knows for sure (https://www.yahoo.com/news/number-missing-californias-deadliest-wildfire-drops-25-173544424.html). The fire erupted on November 8.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess everyone is breathing a sigh of relief!”

Biblical Response:  “Everyone, but those killed… They may discover the fire’s reason for starting, and I’m sure there will be lawsuits that will attempt to assign blame and value, but how do you retrieve the potential futures that were lost? Every person that died had a mother and father…many had just started their lives… It has been said before, but it bears repeating; ‘All tragedy is local.’ There are at least 88 that will never see a sunrise again…and the families of those folks will be missing their loved ones long after the sun rises today.”

“Christians? What an opportunity for the Church to be the Church! We can provide prayer, comfort, and extensive material support (James 2:5-17). Of course, we could just politicize this and wag our heads in commiseration, but that will only make ourselves feel better…and that only temporarily.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to have true sympathy, not some empty pretended sorrow for those who we think should have done differently anyway; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 12-3-18 Render to Caesar

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-3-18

Rendering to Caesar

What’s Happening: “Paris is under siege – no, not by Napoleon – but by protesters that are complaining about the high cost of living and a new fuel tax (that has much to do about ‘climate change’). Macron promises to deal with the protests (that are the most violent since 2005) when he returns from the G20 Summit in Argentina. 224 have been arrested and over 100 injured so far. The protesters are trashing monuments, burning cars and looting boutiques (https://www.usnews.com/news/business/articles/2018-12-01/french-police-deployed-amid-new-round-of-protests-over-taxes). ‘(Violence) has nothing to do with the peaceful expression of a legitimate anger,’ Macron said from Buenos Aires.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Nobody likes paying taxes.”

Biblical Response:  “You’re right. Opposition to the Stamp Act and the Tea Act fostered riots that turned into the American Revolution…so I guess we have no room to talk. Still, both are to blame – the government (for passing a nonsensical tax), and the protesters (for the violence). You cannot push either beyond a certain point. What will be the end? Macron, whose popularity is understandably flagging, may cave…but so may the protesters.”

“Christians? Sometimes, a government taxes too harshly or does something else unpopular. However, we are to pay our taxes (Luke 20:22-25; Rom. 13:6-7). Nothing is said about whether we like it or not. I guess God wants us to object only for the more serious. What’s more serious than our money you ask? Well, in the first place…it’s not your money (Ps. 24:1). Peter and John protested before the Jewish leaders over the more serious wrong of preaching in the name of Christ (Acts 3:1-4:22), but continued. In the second place…well, you’re in second place, not in first. As my pastor once said, ‘That’s a funny way for God to spend His money.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to have and maintain the right priorities, but save us from a tyrannical government; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
