Sorry About Buffy

What’s Happening: “John McCain’s dog died, being drowned by a freak accident in a drain pipe last month, Cindy McCain told the Arizona Republic yesterday. ‘Burma’ never left the Senator’s side, she said, and is with John again (https://www.yahoo.com/news/mccain-family-says-dog-drowned-getting-stuck-pipe-173208710.html). One might ask why, with so much else in the news (Venezuela, Iran, North Korea, China, etc.), this would be the chosen topic today? It is about time that we had a biblical understanding of what happens to pets after they die.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Surely Buffy’s in heaven, right?”

Biblical Response:  “As unsettling as it might be…NO. I mean, it’s clear from Isaiah 11:6-9 that there will be animals in heaven (and I personally believe all species – even the extinct ones – will be there, though I have no scriptures that actually say that, just the character of God – I don’t believe He ever makes mistakes). And from 1 Cor. 15:35-55 we learn that there is one kind of flesh for Man and another for animals. Where we have a soul (that must be saved), animals do not. Sure, pets get bonded to their owners and some take on their owner’s emotional traits…but to say that ‘Buffy” (or Burma) is in heaven, is not very biblical…though no doubt comforting to some.”

“Christians? We should expend our efforts on soul winning, on reasoning creatures. An animal only responds to stimuli according to instinct and training. We assign them human characteristics, especially if we are endeared to them. Does God love and care for animals and should we? Of course, but only as they serve the ones He died for. Sure, He died for all creation (John 3:16), but He only specifically resurrects specific souls.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to see animals as objects, but as sacred trusts to steward over (Gen. 2:15); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-6-19 The Power of Knowledge

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -5-6-19

The Power of Knowledge

What’s Happening: “North Korea launched projectiles over the weekend that some fear may be a signal of the collapse of talks between Kim and Trump (Trump walked out of the last denuclearization talks). Some say they were not ICBMs and should not be taken by us or South Korea as anything but military preparedness (https://www.yahoo.com/news/skorea-says-nkorea-tested-tactical-guided-weapon-094239444.html). Kim’s talks with Putin last week add fuel to the rumor that Kim might be seeking sanction relief elsewhere, too. In any case, the distraction factor is high.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Is it time for ‘duck and cover’ drills?”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not, but ‘fear hath torment’ (1 John 4:18). Besides, those drills from the ‘50s only made school kids (and their parents) feel better about the personal survivability of a nuclear holocaust. If it isn’t North Korea and its bellicosity, it’s Venezuela and the Cuba-Russia-China threat…or the Iranian-Syrian threat against Israel…or what’s happening in the South China Sea…or the latest suicide bombing…or whatever. We just need to ‘chill out’ and realize God is not surprised by any of this. It is merely the ‘torment’ He was referring to.

Fear is like Capitalism…only in the negative. Capitalism works because it correctly assumes Man is basically bad. Greed, avarice, and envy are real (and sinful, but universal) emotions. Profiting from them is predictable. Fear is why mutually assured destruction (MAD) works today as a viable deterrent to nuclear war. This does not mean that we shouldn’t seek a world that is free from these wayward emotions, but realize utopian systems will never work without a Man that has been regenerated.”

“Christians? The reason why, though we are duly concerned, we are not ‘jacked up’ by the fear-mongering media, is that we know the liberation that comes with the knowledge of the truth (John 8:32). We can calmly comfort others while offering wisdom from on high because we know how it all turns out.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to take events in their eternal context and offer Your wisdom   and leave the hand-wringing to the enemy; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Elections Have Consequences

What’s Happening: “Ilyan Omar’s comments blaming the U.S. for intervening in Venezuela were not appreciated by Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and he said so. He referred to her remarks as ‘ignorant’ and ‘disgusting,’ citing the decades of negative economic and social slide that came first under Chavez and then Maduro as context for the current crisis (https://www.yahoo.com/news/pompeo-omar-venezuela-comments-ignorant-152941658.html). ‘The nicest thing I can say is, it is unbelievable ignorance. It’s just factually wrong,’ Pompeo said. ‘The problems in Venezuela have been years in the making. It’s been a socialist regime, first with Chavez, now with Maduro. And for a member of Congress, who, frankly — one who sits on an important national-security committee — to make a statement blaming America first in this way, it’s not only ignorant, it’s disgusting.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “She’s just a newly-elected Congresswoman…big deal!”

Biblical Response:  “It is a big deal! Or did you not know she sits on the powerful Foreign Affairs Committee? She even used the Russian line of ‘coup attempt.’ If you had wanted the enemy to infiltrate the U.S. Congress, could you have done more damage than to put Omar in office? Elections do have consequences and the un-American actions of the Representative from Minnesota could not be more devastating. If we think that no way will America ever choose socialism…think again. We cannot sit idly by and let an ‘ignorant’ electorate just say ‘oops.’”

“Christians? If we had been polled a week before the crucifixion, when palm branches were being waved as Christ made His humble yet triumphant entry into Jerusalem for the Passover (John 12:13-15), no way we would we have predicted Jesus’ meteoric fall from favor ending in His crucifixion just a week later.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to take seriously the enemy’s attempts to sift us; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-3-19 Measured in Sacrifice

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -5-3-19

Measured in Sacrifice

What’s Happening: “It happened again…another death at the University of North Carolina Charlotte (UNCC) happened late last night. Two shooting deaths had occurred Tuesday (4 wounded) as 21-year-old Riley C. Howell and 19-year-old Ellis R. Parlier were gunned down in class, on the last day of class, by a 22-year-old suspect, whom the police have in custody (https://www.yahoo.com/news/one-dead-shooting-student-housing-015934039.html), Not much is known about the latest victim…or a suspect; and there is no information about any connection – it’s just too early to tell. Was there a hero like the President recognized yesterday in the Poway, California synagogue shooting? Again, too soon to tell.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Hero or not, those dead are just as dead. What a waste!”

Biblical Response:  “True, but to give your life to save others is just as noble, too. They (who is the ‘proverbial’ they anyway?) say: ‘love is measured in sacrifice.’ Surely, ‘greater love has no man than he lay his life down for his friend’ (John 15:13). Imagine laying your life down for your enemies! (Rom. 5:8) Some acts of love require great sacrifice (John 3:16). I don’t know the story (and the full story is only known by One), but jumping in front of a bullet has to be more of a reaction (though I’m not saying it was less heroic).”

“Christians? We laud  wrestling with the decision in the garden of Gethsemane, and remaining quiet while enduring a false accusation, but giving Your life when You could have called legions of angels…well that’s a kind of heroism (or love) none of us possess!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to show Your love by our sacrifice and thereby prove our heritage; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-2-19 Same Old, Same Old

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -5-2-19

Same Old, Same Old

What’s Happening: “Things have gone from bad to worse in Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela…where before inflation rates were ridiculous (hundreds of %), today it is unthinkable (a Million %!)….where mass exodus was once alarming, it is now making ghost towns of once bustling barrios…where intimidation squads were prevalent, now death squads are common…no one argues that the end is in sight…but that is a discussion that was held more than a decade ago (https://www.yahoo.com/news/maduros-death-squads-add-terrifying-181444096.html). In an exchange by journalist Hannah Strange and her friend after returning to Venezuela recently,  (Hannah is the author of the above link in The Telegraph), ‘You realise we were having this conversation a decade ago,’ my friend commented. ‘Yes, I remembered.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “This is unprecedented!”

Biblical Response:  “Alas, it is not. Revolutions are almost always accompanied by riots and protesters….or are you not a student of history? From Iran’s (remember the hostage crisis when Shah Pahlavi left – 1979 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammad_Reza_Pahlavi  – ?); or ours (remember the Boston Tea Party – 1773 https://www.britannica.com/event/Boston-Tea-Party  -?); I cannot think of an exception. Except when God steps in (Acts 9:2-16) as He did with Saul/Paul. Why is that? It might have something to do with Man’s fallen nature (read Gen. 3). Unless God steps in again, there is much more bloodshed ahead. The outcome? Venezuela is not specifically spoken of in scripture (of course, neither is America).”

“Christians? We need to be more concerned with the revolution He needs to bring about in our hearts. That is not to say revolutions elsewhere are not sometimes necessary and important, just that they need to be put in context.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to remember to pray for our brethren amidst their persecutions, and our leaders amidst their deliberations; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-1-19 Saber-rattling

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -5-1-19

Saber-rattling

What’s Happening: “Two U.S. warships made the usual cruise through the Strait of Taiwan over the weekend and (Red) China made the usual protest. Does the U.S. have the permission of Taiwan (formerly the island of Formosa)? Yes, but the independent nation of Taiwan is claimed by mainland China, too, and they have to protest. Nothing will probably come of either action (the U.S. ‘incursion’ or China’s protest). Both are just trying to keep up their claims (https://www.yahoo.com/news/taiwan-reports-voyage-2-us-warships-taiwan-strait-022818485.html). ‘The Taiwan issue is the most important and sensitive issue in Sino-U.S. relations,’ said Geng Shuang, Chinese Foreign Minister, Monday.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “It’s just so much saber-rattling!”

Biblical Response:  “Probably. And China’s island-building in the South China Sea is just a blatant attempt at extending their territorial claims. Still, first come the claims, then the blockade (it hasn’t happened yet, but it probably will); then they’ll wait for us to blink…their just trying to get us to change our mindset. Their claims are just so much rhetoric until we quit making our cruises. By making them, we maintain our claim…by not making them, we reinforce their claim. Is our mindset important? Is treating that straight as a free sealane all that vital to our interests?  Yes. How you regard a disputed territory will govern your action toward it.

Take the earth for example: Does it belong to Lucifer – or – the Church? We have the title deed from God, Who owns it in the first place (Ps. 24:1; Matt. 16:18). In fact, that last scripture guarantees us victory…in our claims…and in reality!”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in territorial claims…but claims without corresponding action is just so much ‘saber-rattling.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give us the right mindset…no one defends what he does not consider his; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
