CLARITY – 7-20-19 Selective Memory

CLARITY

Selective Memory

What’s Happening: “50 years ago today, our perceptions changed forever..Man first walked on the surface of the moon. When Neil Armstrong quipped his famous quote (‘One small step…’), he and his two fellow astronauts, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, were making history, about a decade since the first orbit of Earth by a human being (John Glenn). Those were heady days…and they are being commemorated today all over the world…now 50 years later (https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/apollo/apollo11.html). There is a plaque on the lunar lander that announces that it was done for all Mankind: ‘Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Wow! Anything is possible! I am so proud!”

Biblical Response:  “In a sense, I am too. Still, I have two caveats: 1) As much as I appreciate the millions who contributed to that feat, I know that God really made it possible and 2) While this may have been a great thing to remember, things like Auschwitz and 9/11 might just be things we want to forget…capabilities we don’t want to admit, let alone herald. We all have a tendency toward ‘selective memory.’ We want to remember our great achievements and forget our past mistakes. The Passover celebration is full of great calls to remember how the Lord rescued His people from the bondage of Egypt (Ex. 12:11-20), Yet Paul famously wanted to forget his past treatment of Jews who had converted (Phil. 3:13). Sometimes remembering serves us, sometimes forgetting serves us. What we must do is to resist the temptation to please our flesh when we remember or forget.”

“Christians? Pleasing the flesh is….well, pleasing, but it’s not a recommended activity (1 John 2:15-16).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to remember what we should remember, and forget only what we should forget: in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-19-19 Lest We Forget

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -7-19-19

Lest We Forget

What’s Happening: “25 years have passed, but the memory is still fresh…at least for the 85 victims’ families who were killed (hundreds more were wounded) in the 1992 attack and again in the 1994 Hezbollah bombings that hit two Jewish sites in Argentina. Although there have been accusations of a cover-up and a plethora of investigations, no one has yet been incarcerated (https://www.yahoo.com/news/argentina-honors-terror-attack-victims-152226960.html). In addition to the grief experienced in today’s recollections there will be much celebration tomorrow at the 50th anniversary ceremony of Neil Armstrong’s historic walk on the moon. He became the first man on the moon, saying, ‘One small step for man, one giant leap for Mankind.’ (https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/armstrong-walks-on-moon).  These two events represent the broad spectrum of Man’s tragedies and triumphs.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So, am I to be sad or happy?”

Biblical Response:  “Both…respectively. And there are lessons to be learned from both. That the price of liberty is eternal vigilance (pay attention Argentina – actually, Thomas Jefferson might be the original author in 1817)…and that few things of greatness are accomplished without the help of others (there were 400,000 engineers and millions of taxpayers that made Neil Armstrong’s feat possible). And we are right to cry and rejoice. In fact, we are commanded by God to do so (Rom. 1:15). And we are to remember…that anything is possible…bad or good. The real importance is that we learn what we are supposed to learn…lest we condemned to learn those lessons again.”

“Christians? We believe in learning…and in remembering. Only God has the luxury of forgetting…and we are still the beneficiaries of that (Jer. 31:34).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to remember, as painful or joyful as that may be…and LEARN; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-18-19 Color Blind

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -7-18-19

Color Blind

What’s Happening: “The brouhaha about ‘love it or leave it’ has been going on almost a week…and it still continues. ‘The Squad’ reacts to Trump’s remarks…he reacts to theirs…and the cycle continues. Now the House of Representatives has passed a resolution condemning the President’s ‘racist’ remarks (which is not allowed by House rules, by the way). The most interesting reaction may have come from Representative Mike Kelly (Rep.-PA) when he said, ‘I’m a person of color. I’m white’ (https://www.yahoo.com/news/gop-congressman-im-a-person-of-color-im-white-175120812.html.). ‘You know, they talk about people of color, I’m a person of color. I’m white. I’m an Anglo Saxon. People say things all the time, but I don’t get offended,’ said Kelly. ‘With a name like Mike Kelly you can’t be from any place else but Ireland.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I never thought about it…I guess white is a color, too, huh?”

Biblical Response:  “Uh…yeah! Though people forget that. And maybe rightfully so…what with ‘white privilege’ and all. I guess that’s why the push for ethnic minority reparations has some steam. Still, God is color blind (Acts 17:26). Besides, like I’ve said before (7/12 – ‘Ethnos’…go to subdeo.com), we’re all going to look alike in a few millennia, anyway. As far as being sensitive to others’ speech, somebody is always offended by something. Speaking of skin, maybe we need to develop more thickness, regardless of color! The all-black church in Las Vegas I preached to didn’t seem to mind that I was all-white.”

“Christians? We should be used to offense. After all, we serve the Rock of Offense (Isaiah 8:14; Rom. 9:33; 1 Pet. 2:8). It makes it easy when you realize Jesus had the same color of blood as us all.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to take such offense and to not ‘punch each others’ buttons’ when we know where they are…surely we are more mature than that; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-17-19 Them That Have the Rule

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -7-17-19

Them That Have the Rule

What’s Happening: “In cities across the land, illegal immigrants are being rounded up for deportation. LULAC, or League of United Latin American Citizens, are none too happy about it and are providing their constituency with answers to give if approached by federal officers. Numbers of people arrested is unavailable. As an example, immigration attorney, Arturo Rios said he is trying to quell the fears of undocumented immigrants in the Tampa Bay, Florida area (https://www.baynews9.com/fl/tampa/news/2019/07/16/bay-area-immigrant-community-in-fear-of-ice-raids). ‘I can tell you that it’s mass hysteria in the immigrant community, because they believe it’s a mass crackdown on anybody that’s here without proper documentation. We have nothing to say that Tampa Bay area or Central Florida is being targeted. Of course, that could change in a heartbeat,” Rios said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Should I be concerned?.”

Biblical Response:  “No, unless you are not here legally or if you’ve hired somebody that’s an illegal immigrant (oops! I mean the more politically-correct ‘undocumented worker’ – what about those children we hear so much about? They aren’t workers. No, but they are ‘future workers’). Besides, ICE is only deporting those who’ve already been notified of their deportation status and have not shown up for deportation…and many of them were prior felons. The Bible is quite clear:

‘Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit (to them): for they watch in

behalf of your souls, as they that shall give account; that they may do this with joy, and not with grief: for this (were) unprofitable for you.’ (Heb. 13:17 ASV)

LULAC and other non-profits out there still have the obligation to set good examples. Their lack of submission (and their instructing of others how not to submit) is just plain wrong. If you disagree with a law, petition Congress to change the law, don’t foment rebellion. But you say Congress is non-responsive. Then elect others.

“Christians? We too have the obligation to submit. If we disagree, we, if we are American voters, have the right (and obligation) to elect those who will change the laws…or we can go to jail – Paul spent much of his life there. We should just be thankful we are Americans. Many others don’t have that option. That’s why immigrants line up to get in America – you don’t see that anywhere else – certainly not in Iran, North Korea, Russia, Red China, etc…

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be grateful and submissive to ‘them that have the rule’; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-16-19 Backward Progress

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -7-16-19

Backward Progress

What’s Happening: “The President tweeted yesterday morning and ‘The ‘Squad’ (AOC [Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez], Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley) responded with a heated press conference. Last week had the democrats divided (The Squad accused Pelosi of racism), but this week the ire is turned on Trump for his tweet…even some Republicans joined in the nearly universal Democrat denunciation of the President’s tweet, misquoted by the Democrats (‘go back to the countries you came from’) (https://www.yahoo.com/news/the-squad-omar-ocasio-cortez-tlaib-and-pressley-hit-back-at-trump-and-call-for-his-impeachment-223255118.html). The President really tweeted, ‘…go back to where you came from…’ – not a significant difference until you do a little research and find that ¾ of them were born in America.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So maybe he really is xenophobic (fear of foreigners or anything strange).”

Biblical Response:  “At least that is what they’re accusing him of – of course he did marry someone with an accent (in fact, First Lady, Melania Trump, speaks five languages, four of them foreign). Sometimes the President is not too Presidential…okay a lot of the time. Still, it’s hard to argue with the track record of this rather crass, nonconformist…which may be the reason he was elected. As far as his comments in the tweet (and his comments responding to the press’ questions later), I agree with the concept that sometimes you have to step back before you can make real progress. I’m not putting words in the President’s mouth, but learning from your past seems to be a prerequisite for progress in the future (‘Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good; haste makes mistakes.’ – Prov. 19:2 NLT)

“Christians? Going backward to go forward is nothing new for us (Joseph’s experience, slavery in Egypt, and the Babylonian Captivity come to mind). Come to think of it, even Christ’s death seemed a blow for victory by the religious leaders of the day – boy, were they wrong! (By the way, ‘boy’ was not a racist comment…)”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to see beyond the present backward trend to the progress you have for us through insightful regress; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-15-19 Owning and Owning-Up

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -7-15-19

Owning and Owning-Up

What’s Happening: “Yesterday Democrat 2020 Presidential hopeful, Beto O’Rourke, published a blog post that said he was a descendant of slave owners and that it was ‘time to unite the two Americas.’ He, Kamala Harris and Cory Booker have come out in favor of reparations, while Mitch McConnell, Majority Leader and Senator from Kentucky has opposed it stating, ‘I don’t think reparations for something that happened 150 years ago for whom none of us currently living are responsible is a good idea’ (https://www.yahoo.com/news/beto-orourke-finds-personal-connection-031040541.html). However, those favoring reparations are quite vocal. ‘McConnell benefited like any other individual, family or country would benefit — through the accumulation of generational wealth and privilege directly tied to the beastial submersion of other human beings into a system of long-term free labor and breeding,’ said Ricky L. Jones, chair of the Pan-African Studies Department at the University of Louisville.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Do I need to go to ancestry.com of one of the other genealogical sites to determine if I owe reparations?”

Biblical Response:  “If you feel like you should. I mean, there is no doubt that many of our ancestors owned slaves…AND IT WAS WRONG. Still, what was wrong for them is not accountable to any of their offspring (Deut. 24:16). If so, change is impossible for any of us. Slavery might have America’s original sin, but Genesis chapter three speaks about the real original sin…one of which all of us are guilty  (even those sold into slavery). In a very real sense, we were all sold into slavery. Paul speaks of it in Rom. 6:6-11. Thankfully, we’ve all been bought out of slavery by Christ’s blood shed on the cross (Rom. 6:23),”

“So what am I saying? Should we be in favor of reparations or not? I’m saying do whatever the Holy Spirit tells you. I think reparations should be voluntary. If you feel you are under conviction, go ahead (not that you can assuage the guilt of your ancestors). It’s kind of like tearing down a Confederate statue or bull-dozing a Nazi Concentration Camp…some historical sins we continually need to be reminded of lest we forget…and be condemned to repeat past mistakes.”

“Christians? It is not wrong to let someone else suffer for OUR sin. If it is, we’re all in trouble. Still, like Christ, it should be voluntary (Matt. 26:53). Not just the payment for sin…sure, we’ve all been given that gift, but some refuse to open that gift and apply it to themselves. Haven’t you ever heard of FREE WILL?”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to listen to the voice of Your Spirit,,,and be obedient; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

The Debate is Heating Up

What’s Happening: “One thing’s for sure: There is much debate over climate change. Some, like Representative Brooks from Alabama say there is climate change, but not from humans and not as a result of what many claim the Green New Deal is supposed to address tps://www.desiringgod.org/articles/trade-self-help-for-god-help?utm_campaign=Daily%20Email&utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&utm_content=74564732&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-8WjluigTaIKUC665tFSCzzGtBCHioadv24nburmbRRLqbNtTuVYHCw6lFDmmv5byVXS40GJ9Jx_PVCX6IccYuhIUyAiQ&_hsmi=74564732). Still, that was in May of 2018, What he said last Thursday has many wondering. Search for it yourselves. You’ll find it hard, Sure, there are websites galore espousing the liberal line and many news stories (https://www.newsnow.co.uk/h/World+News/Environment/Climate+Change), but few that give both sides of the debate. Some say this is just a cyclical warming, some say we only have 12 more years…if we don’t take drastic measures.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What is the truth? Should I be worried?”

Biblical Response:  “The Bible says; “While the earth remains, seedtime and  harvest, And cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not  cease.” (Gen 8:22 NASU) That’s a little more (sarcasm) reliable than a government-funded or GreenPeace-funded study that only rewards a certain conclusion.”

“Should you be worried? Perhaps. Mostly you should be worried about folks who’ll sell their soul to the highest bidder. Is the earth on its way out? Yes (2 Pet. 3:13; Rev. 21:1), but not before you  can hit your knees…and I’d say you have at least a little more than 12 years,”

“Christians? We believe the environment is one of Man’s chief stewardships (Gen. 2:15). But we also believe in good science and in not letting our fears manipulate us (1 John 4:18). Besides, Man would like to think he’s in charge, that he is so powerful that he can save (or lose) the planet by his own actions.”

Ethnos

What’s Happening: “Accusations of racism followed the NRCC’s release of a fundraising email featuring Colin Kaepernick’s photo Wednesday. Critics say the photo is obviously darkened…the NRCC denies it. The photo was tied to an appeal for a $25 donation in exchange for a gift of a Betsy-Ross-flag mug. Photos have been lightened or darkened in the past, too (https://news.yahoo.com/republican-nrcc-darken-colin-kaepernick-skin-ad-134501694.html;_ylt=AwrXgiLAhShdoBEAdTvQtDMD;_ylu=X3oDMTEyZmkyZ283BGNvbG8DZ3ExBHBvcwMzBHZ0aWQDQjgzMjBfMQRzZWMDc3I-).  ‘“House Republicans are running on racism, plain and simple. It’s disgusting, it’s offensive and it should be fireable, but there’s no accountability in the Republican Party,” a Democrat  operative said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess they were caught ‘black-handed.’”

Biblical Response:  “That was a crude attempt at some racial humor, huh? In the first place, a careful examination of the photo shows caucasians in the background similarly ‘darkened’ (which flies in the face of accusations of discriminatory practices). Secondly, the left-leaning media needs to ‘make hay while the sun shines.’ Racial inter-marrying promises to eliminate all accusations of racism in a few centuries anyway. By then, we should all be the same skin color that Adam and Eve were (Acts 17:26 – ‘nation’ is translated from the original Greek word ‘ethnos’). God must be laughing at our pointless pettiness.”

“Christians? There is no room for racism in those who believe in Acts 17:26. God is colorblind, in a sense. Certainly, He sees us all equally culpable (Isaiah 53:6; Rom. 3:23). It doesn’t exclude any race from His universal judgment…which is why we need a Universal Savior.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, forgive our history of racial injustice; I’m thankful for Your patience with our thickheadedness; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Untimely

What’s Happening: “A man went over Niagara Falls unprotected…and lived (!) AFP reported yesterday. The man, unidentified, had climbed over a retaining wall and was swept over Horseshoe Falls, the largest one, and fell 188 feet. He was found sitting on a rock with non-life-threatening injuries. He joins a very elite club: only four other people have ever gone over the falls in an unprotected manner and lived to tell the tale (https://www.yahoo.com/news/man-survives-plunge-over-niagara-falls-175352604.html). A seven-year-old boy went over the falls in 1960 with a life jacket on after a boating accident. He also survived after a ring from a tour boat was thrown to him.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Wow! I’m sure that got his attention!”

Biblical Response:  “You think?!And after such a stupid stunt! Why do you think a retaining wall was built? He committed Reason # 2 of my Four Reasons Why ‘Bad’ Things Happen: 1) We live in a fallen world (Gen. 3); 2) You do something stupid; 3) You are the collateral damage for someone else’s stupidity; or 4) God is trying to teach you something. On second thought, perhaps he falls in more than one category. I guess it was just not his time (Heb. 9:27). By the way, I put ‘bad’ in quotes because what we judge as ‘bad’ today we might call ‘good’ tomorrow (Rom. 8:28).”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in the orchestration of all events (Acts 17:24-26); that we are all on appointments foreseen by an all-knowing God (Is. 46:10). We just need to get in step. Which is not to say we are fatalists…there is such a thing as free will…but I don’t have enough room here.”

Guilt by Association

What’s Happening: “The brouhaha over Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta’s having negotiated the plea deal of Jeffrey Epstein, a sex trafficker prosecuted by Acosta’s office when he was a Miami prosecutor a decade ago, may end up in Acosta’s resignation…at least if Democrats have their way. New evidence and witnesses may have the case up for re-litigation and Secretary Acosta is all for Epstein getting the justice he deserves (https://www.yahoo.com/news/calls-alex-acosta-resignation-jeffrey-epstein-plea-deal-160711696.html.  ‘“The crimes committed by Epstein are horrific, and I am pleased that NY prosecutors are moving forward with a case based on new evidence. With the evidence available more than a decade ago, federal prosecutors insisted that Epstein go to jail, register as a sex offender and put the world on notice that he was a sexual predator. Now that new evidence and additional testimony is available, the NY prosecution offers an important opportunity to more fully bring him to justice,’ Acosta wrote on Twitter.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Should he resign?”

Biblical Response:  “It depends on to whom you talk. Those who appreciate the job he’s doing as Labor Secretary, and their are Dems and Republicans in this camp, say he should stay. Those who are against everything Trump. say he should go. It remains to be seen who will prevail. As far as guilt by association, that was done  away biblically thousands of years ago (Deut. 24:16). Each should only bear the consequences of his own sin. Of course, it’s a good thing that Jesus’ blood was shed for all our sins!”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in individual accountability. We also believe that our sin will eventually make its way to the surface (Matt. 4:22).. As the old saying goes: you can run, but you can’t hide.”
