CLARITY – 4-30-20 A Secret Weapon

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-30-20

A Secret Weapon

What’s Happening: “Citing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or ‘Nuclear Deal,’ Iran yesterday said the U.S. has no right to attempt to keep them from buying conventional weapons (from the Russians or the Chinese) after the expiration of the ban on such sales in October. Although the U.S. got out of the JCPOA in 2018, it has submitted its desires through the remaining members of France, Germany, and England. The U.S. has said it will prevent Iran from buying any weapons, but has not said what it will do to effect such an embargo (https://news.yahoo.com/u-not-allow-iran-buy-152355551.html). Quoting from the Reuters’ article: ‘We’re not going to let that happen,’ [Secretaryof State] Pompeo told reporters at a news briefing. ‘We will work with the U.N. Security Council to extend that prohibition on those arms sales and then in the event we can’t get anyone else to act, the United States is evaluating every possibility about how we might do that.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Wait a minute. I thought we got out of the nuclear deal. How can we dictate what Iran buys?””

Biblical Response:  “That’s what’s being attempted…through France, Germany, or England…who are still members of the JCPOA. Why does that matter? We don’t want Iran to attack us conventionally after October (they say they don’t have a nuclear option – of course, we got out of the JCPOA because we believed they were developing nuclear weapons in violation of the agreement). All that does not take into account our secret weapon. It’s not nuclear or conventional, but it is strategic (I know in worldly terms, that means nuclear). In 2 Cor. 10:4 there is an obscure reference to this weapon:

‘… for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.’ (NASU)”

“Then what is the secret weapon? I mean, you’ve told us about its nature…that it’s not fleshly or ‘carnal…but you rea;ly haven’t revealed what it is. Of course, if you revealed it, would it then be secret?”

“It’s prayer. And there’s not much chance of that secret getting out…so few resort to it today. Prayer has silenced the enemy, made him powerless, foiled his strategies…he doesn’t even have a chance…the victory is assured! Or as my wife is apt to say:

‘You can run from circumstance, hide from consequence, but you can never escape prayer.’

“Christians? We believe in the power of prayer (Matt 21:22):

‘And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.’ (NASU)

Not that we shouldn’t take whatever ‘carnal’ steps we can, just realize their limitations…it’s really going to come down to the ‘secret’ weapon. We live in an America where, sadly, we no longer have a Christian consensus…but that’s a topic for a different blog (besides, the majority is not where the real power lies). However, there are still at least 7,000 that have not bent the knee (1 Kings 19:18). The will of God will still happen.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to have our hopes in You…and help us to use the secret weapon You gave us; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-29-20 Lack of Knowledge

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-29-20

Lack of Knowledge

What’s Happening: “Speculation persists in the disposition of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Some say he is brain dead. Some say North Korea is just being overwhelmed by a mass exodus of Chinese fleeing the coronavirus and Kim is ‘social distancing’ …in the extreme! (although North Korea has maintained they have NO cases of COVID-19). Is the situation dangerous? Compound the instability of the nuclear potential in chaos, with the current state of flux in the Kim/Trump denuclearization talks, a potential vying for power between Kim Jong Un and his sister Kim Yo Jong. and our lack of intelligence coming from the North…well, you may have the ingredients for a perfect storm…of the highly destructive variety (https://news.yahoo.com/dead-or-alive-the-mystery-over-kim-jong-uns-health-demonstrates-the-limits-of-us-intelligence-on-north-korea-090031301.html). Quoting Jenna McLaughlin, the National Security and Investigations Reporter for Yahoo News today: ‘One possible upside to the current possible crisis is that if North Korea is simply suffering from the impact of the pandemic, it could offer the intelligence community a rare opportunity, said Nixon, the former CIA leadership analyst.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Again, so nobody really knows…let’s just wait and see.”

Biblical Response:  “Not that we have much choice…at least in the intelligence community (for additional input, read yesterday’s blog). The truth is, Somebody knows…but He’s not telling (which is His prerogative – Deut. 29:29). Do we need to know? Maybe. The real problem is what Hosea 4:6 promises:

“My  people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” (NASU)

“Christians? We believe that knowledge is the key to peace…both eternal (read Matt. 7:23 and underline/italicize the word ‘knew’) and here on earth. There is an obscure passage that emphasizes the value of the otherwise few soldiers (only 200) that were listed as the sons of Issachar (1 Chron. 12:32); valued because they ‘understood the times, and knew what Israel should do.’ This is what America needs today.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to pursue both kinds of peace…and realize that knowledge is the key; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-28-20 Talk About “Grave’ Condition!

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-28-20

Talk About ‘Grave’ Condition!

What’s Happening: “Is he dead,,,is he recovering from surgery…will his sister now become North Korea’s first female dictator? Questions and rumors swirl about Kim Jong Un, as he has not been seen publicly since April 11, not even attending his grandfather ‘s birthday celebration (as his grandfather, Kim Il Sung,  is the founder of communist North Korea…a big deal). Everybody has an opinion: China is sending a medical investigative team, South Korea says he’s ‘alive and well,’ North Korea maintains he is fine…even Trump says he knows…but is apparently not telling (https://news.yahoo.com/south-korean-official-says-kim-164825490.html). Quoting the Business Insider article that appeared a couple of days ago: ‘Our government position is firm,’ Chung-in Moon, a foreign-policy adviser to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, told Fox News. ‘Kim Jong Un is alive and well. He has been staying in the Wonsan area since April 13. No suspicious movements have so far been detected.’”’

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What’s the big deal? Just because he has a finger on the nuclear button…hmmm…I guess that is a big deal!”

Biblical Response:  “You think?! Either our intelligence mechanism is incompetent or we know, but are playing our cards close to the vest…probably, the latter. And it does matter! Perhaps no one could be a worse nuclear actor…even his sister…but this headline-seeking ego maniac doesn’t live a very healthy life, anyway. He’s obese, chain smokes, and at 36…well, you know why China, his main backer, sent a medical investigative team. I can imagine a certain Jewish council doing the same thing at the grave of Joseph of Arimathea almost 2,000 years ago. Of course, they found it empty (Matt. 27:62-28:6)…boy, did they have some explaining to do!”

“Christians? We believe not only was He risen from the grave, but that nothing else matters, by comparison (1 Cor.15:14-22)…including the disposition of a certain North Korean dictator!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to react in fear, but to act in faith; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-27-20 Consider the Source

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-27-20

Consider the Source

What’s Happening: “This is the second time strict Saudi laws have been relaxed recently. First, it was that flogging, the practice of receiving as much as 50 lashes while handcuffed, sometimes for non-violent crimes, was abolished. Secondly, that minors were exempt from execution. Sharia Law, the law in many majority-Islamic nations, sources much of its edicts in the Koran, or as they would spell it, the Quran. King Salman has brought many controversial reforms to Saudi Arabia and activists generally applaud his attempts at bringing his country into the 21st century (https://news.yahoo.com/saudi-arabia-ends-death-penalty-151128365.html). Quoting AP’s Sunday article: The president of the Saudi government’s Human Rights Commission, Awwad Alawwad, confirmed the latest decision in a statement Sunday, saying it helps the kingdom establish ‘a more modern penal code and demonstrates the kingdom’s commitment to following through on key reforms.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I’m glad they’re becoming more modern…and glad that I don’t live under Sharia Law!”

Biblical Response:  “Perhaps you live in one of the seven states that have banned Sharia law (as of July, 2019: Alabama, Arizona, Kansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Dakota and Tennessee.). At least you don’t live in Michigan (which goes further than any other state in the Sharia direction https://www.sapiens.org/culture/sharia-united-states/). Then there’s Minnesota’s Fifth District Representative, Ilhan Omar. an avowed Muslim, who might be more comfortable under Sharia.  All these facts might fly in the face of your exclamation.”

“As to welcoming their reforms, if they last…and are expanded…I might welcome them, too. The key t6 the legitimacy of any law is its source. God, who made man (Gen. 1:26), as the Creator, should have the final say in how man should interact with man. Since Sharia gets its law from the Koran  (from what Allah is purported to have said) it must be illegitimate; at least for a Christian nation (this might be up for argument, but not if you were one of the Founders – or the Supreme Court in 1892  in Holy Trinity v. United States). And if you think Allah is just another name for Jehovah, you haven’t read the Koran.“

“Christians? We believe that all legitimate law must come from His Word, as dictated by the Holy Spirit (2 Tim. 3:16). Much of it comes from the Ten Commandments (Ex. 20). By the way, those are commandments, not suggestions. In determining a law’s legitimacy, you have to consider the Source.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to welcome change that moves us legitimately in the right direction; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-25-20 The Greater Tragedy

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-25-20

The Greater Tragedy

What’s Happening: “The U.S. has now become the death-from-COVID-19 epicenrer, passing the 50,000 mark, the BBC article that appeared yesterday said. Statisticians were quick to point out that the U.S. is more populous than most countries and is actually not the country greatest hit when you take into consideration relative populations. Still, over 51,000 deaths is a great toll on any country…but the economic cost may be even more devastating. Although states like Georgia, Oklahoma, and Alaska have granted permission for some businesses to reopen, the country still is a long way from returning to normal economically. At the task force briefing yesterday, the President said he wasn’t happy with Georgia’s Governor…that he had not achieved  desired balance between the economic and the health realities (https://news.yahoo.com/us-coronavirus-virus-death-toll-151834675.html). ‘I want the people in Georgia to be safe,’ the President said. ‘And I don’t want this thing to flare up, because you’re deciding to do something that is not in the guidelines’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Being the greatest in death toll was not the MAGA moment Trump was looking for, huh?!”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not. I mean, I feel sorry for the guy. We did indisputably have the greatest economy of all times…not any more. Still, the pandemic is worldwide, and America is still the investor’s best place for the economic future. However, the personal tragedy of death, especially on an individual basis, has cast a pall on the public’s overall assessment of the crisis. “

‘Speaking of tragedy, the greater tragedy of death is not the loss of a loved one, but the loss of the loved one’s opportunity to change their eternal destination (Heb. 9:27). Although the end of life often provides retrospective regret at some of the decisions that were made, death also ends a person’s possibility for repentance. They may regret that they didn’t choose more wisely, but it might be too late to do things differently.”

“Christians? We believe that you only have one life to live…and it’s an eternal one. It’s kind of like the evangelist’s altar call story. ‘I’ve got good news and bad news,’ he says. ‘First the good news: When you die, you’ll be given a brand new body. It can never be killed. It can never be destroyed. It will experience all five senses to their nth degree. Now for the bad news: When you die, you’ll be given a brand new body. It can never be killed. It can never be destroyed. It will experience all five senses to their nth degree….sounds the same? I guess it matters where you’ll spend eternity.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to take seriously our opportunities ‘while it is day’ (John 9:4); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-24-20 Unity vs. Free Speech

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-24-20

Unity vs. Free Speech

What’s Happening: “Commandant General of the Marines (its top general – four stars), David Berger, issued a letter yesterday explaining his ban on all Confederate symbols, saying that Marines needed to focus on symbols that unite rather than divide. .He stopped short of requiring base or building name changes, but he said it was a leader’s responsibility to address anything that theated cohesion. Some will welcome his move, others will feel it’s an attack on free speech rights. The sentiment is actually a national debate now (there was an incident of a white supremacist driving into a crowd of protesters and killing a woman in 2017 and Dylan Reed posing in front of a car with a Confederate flag license plate – he’s the one who killed en masse inside a black church in 2015 (https://news.yahoo.com/marines-top-general-opens-decision-174949984.html).  ‘I am also mindful of the feelings of pain and rejection of those who inherited the cultural memory and present effects of the scourge of slavery in our country,” the General penned. ‘My intent is not to judge the specific meaning anyone ascribes to that symbol or declare someone’s personally held view to be incorrect.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I don’t see anything wrong with a symbol.”

Biblical Response:  “Obviously, some agree. Still, I understand the General (and Nikki Haley – the Governor of.South Carolina, who banned the Confederate flag from flying in front of the legislature in 2015). There are many who are descendants of lynched black-Americans that have reason to be offended by a reminder of a heinous inequity.”

“However, anyone who can’t control their angry reaction to offense, probably shouldn’t be given a military-issued rifle, anyway. The Scripture says it’s okay to be angry, but we are not to sin (Eph. 4:26). Otherwise, if self-control is not to rule the day (Gal. 5:22), we might as well ban all offensive symbols: the ‘peace’ sign; the swastika; the cross. Don’t find some of these offensive? You just haven’t talked to the right person.”

“Christians? If you are one, you had better learn how to be thick-skinned. In fact, Jesus is referred to as the Rock of Offense (Rom. 9:33; 1 Pet. 2;28). You are guaranteed to be persecuted (John 15:18-19). In fact, if you are not persecuted for your faith, you might well wonder if you are living out your faith loud enough.

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to take no offense and, as much as possible, give none either; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-23-20 A Battle of Bluster

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-23-20

A Battle of Bluster

What’s Happening: “Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Major General Hossein Salami threatened the U.S. Navy earlier today, saying: ‘I have ordered our naval forces to destroy any American terrorist force in the Persian Gulf that threatens security of Iran’s military or non-military ships,’ This may have caused President Trump to retaliate in a war of words that had him reciprocate a threat to harassing gunboats. All of this is likely Iran’s response to crippling sanctions and the withdrawal of the US from the ‘nuclear deal.’ Who will win this battle of bluster? It’s quite humorous to see these tiny gunboats next to a huge battleship or a carrier (https://news.yahoo.com/guards-chief-u-warships-destroyed-101041260.html). ‘I am telling the Americans that we are absolutely determined and serious in defending our national security, our water borders, our shipping safety, and our security forces, and we will respond decisively to any sabotage,’ Salami said. ‘Americans have experienced our power in the past and must learn from it.’ Give me a break! Really?!”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Sounds serious to me!”

Biblical Response:  “It may have to Hezekiah, too (he was similarly threatened by the leader of the Assyrian forces – read the account in 2 Kings 18-19). However, the Lord was on his side. Iran touts that Allah is on their side. I guess we’ll see who wins. I will say we are currently in a post-Christian era in America (not the Christian consensus we once enjoyed). Of course, Baal, like Allah, is no god. Sure, Iran can threaten, but the reality begs to differ. Want proof? All I know is that Assyria’s army went home quickly after God killed 185,000 of them in a single night (11 Kings 19:35-36).”

“Christians? Although we believe that God can and does use smaller forces to teach larger forces who’s really in charge (hint; it’s not the larger force OR the smaller force), all this blustering is just so much ‘clouds without rain’ (Prov. 25:14). All this has been predetermined anyway (Acts 17:26). We had just better get in step with God’s plan.

‘This plan of mine is not what you would work out, neither are my thoughts the same as yours!’”  (Isaiah 55:8 LB)

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to not to make empty threats and to realize our strength comes from You, not the size of our forces; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-22-20 Go Left at Madagascar

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-22-20

Go Left at Madagascar

What’s Happening: “You might not know where Mozambique is (East Africa, on the mainland Indian Ocean coast, just west of the island of Madagascar – south of Zimbabwe, east of Tanzania), but they recently (April 7) lost 52 young people who refused to join the ranks of Islamic jihadists. The terrorists are locally known as al-Shabbab, though they would say they are part of the Islamic State. They are attempting to establish a caliphate, but police say they are chasing them to exact justice. Yesterday’s AFP article chronicles a two-year old rampage (https://news.yahoo.com/fifty-two-villagers-killed-jihadists-northern-mozambique-183053657.html). Quoting the article: ‘For more than two years the jihadists mainly targeted isolated villages, killing more than 900 people, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED).’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Another reason I’m glad to live in America!”

Biblical Response:  “Me, too…but we have to be careful that being born here (an event over which we both had no control) doesn’t make us too arrogant to help…or at least pray (Rom. 12:15).”

“Fear apparently had no effect on those young people, at least they would rather die than be a part of the jihadist’s reign of terror. I, for one, applaud them. Until more people are willing to have the courage of their convictions, fear will continue to make folks do things they would rather not. Shouldn’t we fear? Yes, but not like you think (Matt. 10:28):

‘And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear Him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.’ (KJV)”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in fear. Godly fear. In fact, godly fear might lead to faith (this is  exactly what Jesus was trying to say in Luke 13:4). This kind of fear leads to wisdom (Ps. 110:11; Prov. 4:7,10:11). The terrorists are looking forward to 72 virgins. Won’t they be surprised?!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we don’t need to be filled with foolish faith, we don’t need to be filled with foolish fear, either; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-21-20 Reports vs. Facts

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-21-20

Reports vs. Facts

What’s Happening: “Kim Jong-Un’s absence from his grandfather’s birthday celebration (Kim Il Sung) has caused much speculation and generated reports that he was recovering from heart surgery due to excessive smoking, dangerous obesity, and fatigue. Seeing as his father and predecessor’s death was not known (even by his closest advisors) for a few days, it is no wonder rumors swirl. Some say they have intelligence on the subject which confirms Kim’s (now in his thirties) ill health. Others say it’s all just smoke and mirrors – designed to keep everyone guessing.and his name in the news…still, his appearance a few years ago with a cane doesn’t help (https://news.yahoo.com/seoul-plays-down-report-north-korean-leaders-health-050913307.html).Quoting from the AFP article: ‘Excessive smoking, obesity, and fatigue were the direct causes of Kim’s urgent cardiovascular treatment,’ it cited an unidentified source inside the country as saying.””

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Who do you believe?”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, freedom of the press has taken a real beating lately, huh? With accusations of Fake News (some of them well-founded) and intentional (and unintentional) spin, it’s hard to know whom to believe? Thankfully, there’s Someone whose word is dependable (Ps. 89:35; 1 Tim. 1:2). The real rub comes in our ability to discern what the Holy Spirit is saying…and then there are those things He wants to remain a secret (Deut. 29:29). Most of the time, we have to rely on common sense…even if the truth is sometimes not very titillating.”

“Christians? We believe in facts. It’s just sometimes they are hard to know. Even when we do, we have to think Christianly about them…and that goes against our human nature. That’s one of the reasons why we need a new nature (Eph. 4:24):

‘Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy’ (NLT).

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to act on the facts, not react to reports; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-20-20 It Wasn’t a Safe Place

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-20-20

It Wasn’t a Safe Place

What’s Happening: “Just because they were ‘sheltering at home’ did not mean they were safe…at least not for the 16 who were killed in Nova Scotia yesterday (including, tragically, 23-year veteran RCMP officer Heidi Stevenson). The twelve-hour rampage occurred all over the province, but was centered in Portapique. The gunman was killed, though it has not been released whether he did it himself or the RCMP…it left a lot of questions unanswered (https://news.yahoo.com/canada-police-dealing-active-shooter-141347191.html). Quoting from the Reuters article by John Morris: ‘Today is a devastating day for Nova Scotia, and it will remain etched in the minds for many years to come,’ said Lee Bergerman, commanding officer of the RCMP in Nova Scotia.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “If COVID-19 doen’t get you….”

Biblical Response:  “I know that there doesn’t seem to be a safe place anywhere, but like a friend of mine once said (he was a medic in VietNam), ‘the safest place is the center of God’s will’…in other words, location has nothing to do with it (Is 26:3:

‘Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.’ KJV)

‘All tragedy is local, and we certainly want to pray for the victims’ families (Rom. 12:15), but if you’re looking for a safe place from COVID-19, a gunman, a car accident, or some other calamity, good luck! I mean, we do live in a fallen world (Gen 3), and other than taking common-sense precautions….I guess the bumper sticker is right: S*** HAPPENS. However, it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. God is in control. Nothing surprises Him or catches Him off guard (Ps. 139). And that has to be comforting.”

“Christians? We believe in the sovereignty of God (Dan. 5:21; Ps. 96:10). And we believe He always provides sufficient grace for any circumstance (2 Cor. 12:9). We may not like our lot, but that has more to do with us than Him.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to nod in agreement as we duck to protect; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
