CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-30-20

Impatient for Justice

What’s Happening: “White Officer Derek Chavin was charged Friday with 3rd Degree Murder and 2nd Degree Manslaughter in the death of black George Floyd, already under arrest and handcuffed for passing a counrfeit $20 bill. Protesters In Minneappolis and nine other cities (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Denver, Louisville, Phoenix, Memphis and Columbus), although happy about the arrest, seemed generally negative that it took so long. Looting and arson have been common in Minneapolis, including over 150 establishments and the 3rd precinct police headquarters, which the protesters vandalized (https://news.yahoo.com/officer-held-over-us-death-172413019.html). Quoting the BBC article that appeared yesterday: ‘Nearly two minutes before he removed his knee the other officers checked Mr Floyd’s right wrist for a pulse and were unable to find one. He was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center in an ambulance and pronounced dead around an hour later.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “It’s obvious to me he was racially motivated to kill.”

Biblical Response:  “You’re likely right…but a similar rush to judgement isn’t going to help! Similar? How so? Not only was officer Chavin guilty of a ‘rush to judgement’ (apparently along with the three officers who stood by and watched), but so are the looting-burning-vandalizing protesters (or should I label them rioters?). And the Minneapolis Police have not been slow in their charging of Officer Chavin. Remember, reason takes time, emotion just wants to react (Prov. 12:19).

Is their racial prejudice in America? Sadly, yes. However, we didn’t get here overnight. Likely, the solution will require patience. Eventual justice and long-term change is not possible without a heart change (John 3:3-7). Like I’ve said before: There will never be peace on earth, until the Prince of Peace rules in the heart of every man.”

“Christians? We believe in universal submission (Isaiah 11:9-10). However, the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) wasn’t given for drill. There will probably have to be a lot of time, effort, and patience between here and there.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us seek justice…patiently: in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-29-20 ‘Foreign’ Culture War

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-29-20

‘Foreign’ Culture War

What’s Happening: “Tragedies happen even in Iran. What else would you call the ‘honor killing’ of a 14-year old girl by her father for eloping with a forbidden ‘older man’ (he was 29; the legal age for women to marry in Iran is 13)? There are some in Iran’s media who decry such barbaric customs…they are trying to be more acceptable to the West…they fly in the face of President Rouhani and conservative factions who now control the government. The father apparently decapitated the girl in her sleep; there are some anti-violence bills pending in their legislature (https://www.yahoo.com/news/iran-outraged-honour-killing-14-103620523.html).  Quoting from an article yesterday in the The Telegraph: ‘On Twitter, Vice President for Women and Family Affairs, Masoumeh Ebtekar, said a bill on the protection of young people was in the ‘final phase’ of validation by Iran’s Guardian Council.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So why should I care about a tragedy in Iran?”

Biblical Response:  “Because it’s not just a tragedy in Iran…it’s a  tragedy anywhere. Normally, we should let ‘foreign’ cultures establish their own norms…and there is a culture war going on in Iran today..and if  they want to sow what is regarded by the West as reprehensible, their reaping will eventually teach them the wrongness of this practice (though they still haven’t learned after multiple millennia – Gal. 6:7).

“I say normally. You’ve probably noticed I’ve always put ‘foreign’ in quotes. That’s because all cultures are ‘foreign’ to Christians. We’re not of this world (John 18:36). Living by the Word of God can make us seem weird to others, non-normal. And we’re often the objects of persecution. What do I say to that? It comes with the territory (1 Pet. 4;12-14). Living in a predominantly Christian country has gained us a culture that considers ‘honor killing’ barbarism…though I don’t know how we can be repulsed by that and embrace the equally barbaric practice of abortion…but I digress.”

“Christians? We believe in a culture that is antithetical to much of what a ‘good’ Muslim believes (for that matter, much of what CHRINOs believe – Christians In Name Only). The only way our culture war (or Iran’s or anyone’s) is won, is for we Christians to get the Good News out. The Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20) has repercussions.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to seek the world’s salvation and the Christian culture that comes with a global Christian consensus; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-28-20 A Black and White Issue

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-28-20

A Black and White Issue

What’s Happening: “Protests broke out in Minneapolis again (this is the second night) over the killing of George Floyd by alleged police brutality. A bystander-shot video of the officers involved (Derek Chavin, Thomas Lane, Tou Thao, and J. Alexander Kueng), with a clear image of Officer Chavin kneeling on the neck of handcuffed Floyd…who was begging the officer to let him breathe was all over the internet. Floyd was pronounced dead at the hospital later. Police deployed tear gas and rubber bullets in response to adjacent lootings and arson at Target, Family Dollar and Auto Zone stores (https://news.yahoo.com/conflict-erupts-minneapolis-l-protests-023046760.html). ‘I cannot risk the safety of innocent people and so that is what I’ve been sworn to uphold and that is what I am dedicated to do, said Mayor Jacob Frey. ‘We can have both things. We can have peaceful demonstrations, but I also have to ensure the safety of everyone in the city’””

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Were the police or the protesters using masks and practicing social distancing?”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not. I know that was likely spoken in jest, but racial discrimination and police using excessive force are no joking matters. When will we be free of all this? This may sound a little trite…okay, very trite…but there will never be peace on earth until the Prince of Peace rules in the heart of every man! Are the protesters to blame? Yes, if they resorted to violence…the very violence they are supposed to be protesting! But who can blame them?”

“Are the police to blame? Yes, Another incident that demonstrates the inability of training to remove a prejudicial heart of darkness. There will be no end of this because an emotional man cannot control his reaction to injustice. Only God can do that (Gal. 5:22). It is unreasonable to think a heart…any heart…can change on its own.”

“Christians? We believe only a changed heart can offer hope (Rom. 2:29; John 14:27). Meanwhile, dark hearts will do dark things…both police and protesters. It is time for Christians everywhere to pray…and offer an alternative.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to pursue peace on earth…as it is in heaven; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-27-20 There is No Escape

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-27-20

There is No Escape

What’s Happening: “Malka Leifer, a former Australian teacher, and accused of sexually abusing her students in 2014, is finally ruled ‘fit for trial and extradition’ by an Israeli court. She had gone to Israel fleeing prosecution and was mounting a defense of mental incompetence…which has now been denied. Why Israeli President Reuven Rivlin got involved is not clear…other than he spoke to Prime Minister of Australia Scott Morrison about it Wednesday, after the ruling (Australia is beyond the date line and experiences Wednesday before us). Why it took so long (six years) is unclear, too…though his state visit in February may have been relevant (https://news.yahoo.com/israeli-president-calls-australian-pm-092936152.html). Quoting from the Associated Press article: ‘Rivlin noted that the matter was central to his state visit to Australia in February and that he had promised Morrison and Australia’s pro-Israel Jewish community he would monitor the case closely.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “She looks like a pedophile in her picture.””

Biblical Response:  “Yes, but nobody should be condemned on their looks. I mean, Jesus Himself, must have looked guilty, being crucified between two thieves (Matt. 27:38). Thankfully, guilt by association is not a prosecutable offense. Real evidence is needed to convict. And there is no escape from ultimate justice. If Miss Leifer had gotten away from justice in Man’s court, there is a court where ultimate justice will be meted out (Heb. 9:27).”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in ultimate justice. Thankfully, the wrath we deserved was expended on a Savior Who was undeserving and our just punishment was laid on Him (Heb. 9:28). I don’t know whether she’s guilty or innocent, but she will receive justice…here and there.”

“Like I’ve said before: Justice makes hell necessary; mercy makes heaven possible.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to seek Your justice …on earth, as it is in heaven; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-26-20 The Beginning of the End

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-26-20

The Beginning of the End

What’s Happening: “Protests that began in 2019 (really beginning much earlier) finally boiled over into police involvement Sunday in the streets of Hong Kong with mass arrests, the use of tear gas, pepper spray, and rubber bullets. Communists in Beijing pledge installation of mainland laws happening to bring order, but protesters chant ‘Hong Kong independence.’ Hong Kong, long a business hub, rejects the artificially imposed order…and may have sealed their fate. Meanwhile, the U.S. contemplates sanctions in support of the protesters, who only want autonomy. Reaction of the U.S. over China’s role in the coronavirus,  their ongoing theft of technology, and the U.S.-imposed tariffs cloud the already complicated issue (https://www.businessinsider.com/beijing-new-national-security-laws-hong-kong-protests-2020-5Quoting the Reuters article in Business Insider: ‘Protesters chanted ‘Revolution of our time. ‘Liberate Hong Kong,’ ‘Fight for freedom, Stand with Hong Kong,’ and ‘Hong Kong independence, the only way out.’’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Maybe they’ll be more successful than the protesters in Tiananmen Square.”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not. Communists in China won’t allow another democracy on their doorstep (arguably, India, South Korea and Japan are democracies, and already too close). Together with worldwide coronavirus condemnation, tensions in the South China Sea…not to mention the brouhaha over Taiwan…I don’t think the Chi-Coms will put up with it….and I can’t see anyone willing to spend blood and treasure over a tiny island in the Pacific. All this means the beginning of the end…of course some can’t see it (Matt. 16:3). I hope I’m wrong. There were many who threw tea into Boston Harbour (a couple of centuries ago) who weren’t given a chance of success, either…and look how that turned out. Of course, they had God on their side.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe that God plus one is a majority…in fact, He doesn’t even need the one! His sovereign will shall be done, and He  determines the boundaries of nations (Acts 17:26).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to look upon the efforts of those who want to throw off the chains of oppression, optomistically; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-25-20 “Boldly (but Humbly) Going…”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-25-20

“Boldly (but Humbly) Going…”

What’s Happening: “Astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken completed yesterday their ‘dress rehearsal’ for their historic flight Wednesday to the International Space Station (ISS). Historic because for the last nine years since the Space Shuttle program ended, all U.S. astronauts have been forced to hitch a ride on the Russian Soyuz rocket. I say ‘hitch’…I mean rent…the Russians have charged the U.S. dearly…and it has wounded American pride. American free enterprise to the rescue! This time the rent will be paid by NASA to an American company: SpaceX. Although the shot may not actually take place on Wednesday (there is a 40% chance of storms), the flight will go off…if not Wednesday, the flight may be rescheduled for Sunday (https://news.yahoo.com/nasa-spacex-launch-astronauts-complete-093649045.html). Quoting BBC Science Correspondent Jonathan Amos: ‘The weekend “Dry Dress” rehearsal saw the pair don their made-to-measure spacesuits, walk out to a Tesla, and then make a 6km drive down to Kennedy’s famous Launch Complex 39A.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I sure hope it doesn’t end in a puff of smoke like Columbia!”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, me too! Not to say that our previous disasters were a result of our attitude (the Scripture does say – Prov. 16:18 – ‘Pride goes before destruction…’), but I think a little humility might be wise. I see no conflict between science and biblical Christianity, as long as science is not trying to claim credit for what God has made. Some scientists think that we are discovering only the principles that God has known all along. Others (atheists/humanists) think that Man is the ‘measure of all things,’ and that there is nothing done that Man has not first conceived. Who prevails may well determine the future…of space and much more.”

“Christians? We believe that God is the Creator and leads us to go humbly ‘ where no man has gone before,‘ I’m all for the commercialization of space, Star Trek and Star Wars, and imagining things that are ‘out there’…as long as credit goes where credit is due…it is only prudent.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to seek with all humility the wonders You have created for us to discover; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-23-20

You Couldn’t Pay Enough

What’s Happening: “Salah Khashoggi, the son of murdered Jamal Khashoggi, spoke for the family when he forgave the killers of some Washington Post journalists. Activists, who believe that de facto leader of Saudi Arabia, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is behind Jamal’s murder and dismemberment, also believe that much money and pressure from Salman is behind it all. According to Sharia law, the killers’ death sentences will likely be commuted (https://news.yahoo.com/sons-murdered-saudi-journalist-khashoggi-forgive-killers-025248954.html). Quoting the AFP article which appeared yesterday: ‘His family’s pardon is expected to spare the lives of five unnamed people sentenced to death over the murder in a December court ruling, which was lambasted by human rights groups after two top aides to the crown prince were exonerated.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I think Mohammed bin Salman is guilty!”

Biblical Response:  “I think we’re never going to know…at least not on this side of glory. There’s not enough money in the world to obtain forgiveness of even a little white lie, much less a murder-dismemberment…or any killings.  Whether Salah or his siblings or anyone forgives any crime will not change the judgement God will mete out…it’s not called the Final Judgment for nothing. (Matt. 7:22 MSG).There is only one payment that gets any notice by God: Christ crucified (Acts 4:12; 1 John 2:2).””

“Christians? We believe that ‘nothing but the blood of Jesus’ is sufficient for payment of any sin…and all sin…past present, and future. Which is Good News to us (Acts 10:36)!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, thank You for Your condescension and Your generosity; we have benefited greatly by Your FREE forgiveness…free to us…infinitely costly to You; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-22-20 Above Our Pay Grade

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-22-20

Above Our Pay Grade

What’s Happening: “Some eyewitnesses earlier Friday (today) say the Airbus from Lahore (Pakistan) to Karachi made as many as three landing attempts before crashing into a crowded neighborhood near the airport killing at least 104 of the 107 aboard and some of the neighborhood’s residents (it is too recent for reports to be accurate). The jet was trying to land with only one engine functioning properly and flames could be seen coming from it. Although the pilot called ‘Mayday,’ only the tower was warned of impending disaster as the residents of the populous area had no idea what was about to happen (https://news.yahoo.com/official-pakistani-passenger-plane-crashes-103536443.html). ‘We are proceeding direct, sir — we have lost engine,’ a pilot said.

‘Confirm your attempt on belly,’ the air traffic controller said, offering a runway.                      ‘Sir – mayday, mayday, mayday, mayday Pakistan 8303,’ the pilot said before the transmission ended.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What a tragedy!! Why would a good God allow it?!”

Biblical Response:  “Why these 104 (+ residents)? Why today? Why this plane? The questions are endless. I have a friend who just lost a lower extremity to diabetes (his left leg below the knee was amputated). Why him? He is missing the Bible study he was leading while he’s recovering…he’s an elder in our church, for crying out loud! (He and his wife have been enduring all this with a stiff upper lip…but they have to be hurting inside.) Why?!”

“All I can say is: it is above our pay grade. There are things He reveals…and things He doesn’t (Deut. 29:29). The what and when of His purpose are a mystery to me…and He obviously prefers that. He is God…not me. Are there reasons bad things happen?”

“Yep. Keep reading:

Why “Bad” Things Happen

Why ‘Bad’ Things Happen – This is an age-old question and I don’t presume to know the reasons behind all of God’s mysterious purposes, but I have observed that most things we designate as “bad” can usually be grouped into one or more of four categories. Let me explain:

  1. We live in a fallen world.

When Eve ‘fell’ from her position of grace in God’s creation, listened to the lies of Lucifer (though her husband, who was with her, was curiously silent – read Gen. 3:1-13), and ate of the forbidden fruit, she loosed many unintended consequences which only began with the curses God levied (Gen. 3:14-19).

Much that we consider “bad” are just the consequences of that original disobedience.

      2.   We sometimes make stupid decisions.

Although students of the Creator have full access to the instruction manual (the Bible), they are enticed by their own greed (or some other lust distracts them) and they pursue an unwise course…and reap the rewards of their foolishness (Gal. 6:7).

      3.  We are the collateral damage of others’ stupidity.

Sometimes other people make unwise decisions and our suffering is the natural outcome of simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

        4.  God is trying to tell us something.

Sure, He could speak in an audible voice (and sometimes does), but that is what the Holy Spirit is for. We didn’t hear Him, so He resorts to speaking to us through our circumstances.  (See Ps. 86:11-12).

Sometimes our consequences seem just, sometimes not, but we often find that our judgement in such matters is a bit biased…maybe that is why He had to resort to circumstances – we wouldn’t listen to anything else.

        5.  A combination of the above.

Often, we experience a combination of (or all) the causes of “Bad” Things.

From our limited perspective (temporal), we can’t see all the subsequent interventions God has planned in His perspective (eternal). Hence, we do not understand (or even conceive of) how what the enemy meant for our destruction is really being used by God for our ultimate blessing (Gen. 50:20).

Time would fail me to speak of Ruth, Esther, Joseph, Jonah, Job and others who have all experienced “bad” things happening to them. Besides John Piper has done it so much better (https://www.desiringgod.org/messages/all-things-for-good-part-2?utm_campaign=Daily%20Email&utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&utm_content=73892980&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_99dx-TCkx3yY_WvmjL61wazCjsr5us8gDLKpoUeGoW4_wy1Id9dsmj8nUSBdDdfXLUs2Eyz7n3ZxCoA8iE0G4QdYPjA&_hsmi=73892980).

All this is not to say that God is capricious. He is not. He is always good (and not by just allowing the ‘bad’…as in Job). No, all things He does are good. Maybe not in our temporal perception, but in His eternal one. Hence: Rom. 8:28, and my use of the quotation marks in “Bad”.

Pity, all judgements are made from the deception of a still photograph of a moment in time…God’s judgements come from a four-dimensional video.

“Christians? We believe in a sovereign God…He can allow or do what He wants. We may (and often do not) understand what He’s doing. It’s like Isaiah 5:8-9 says:

This plan of mine is not what you would work out, neither are my thoughts the same as yours! For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than yours, and my thoughts than yours.’ (LB)”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to fit into Your plan and receive the comfort of Your Holy Spirit, as it is appropriate; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

It’s a Little Late for That

What’s Happening: “In a handwritten note, Zacarias Moussoui, sometimes referred to as the 20th hijacker in the Sept 11, 2001, attacks, has ‘renounced and repudiated terrorism and Bin Laden’ in an effort to get his treatment to be less harsh. This may not work as U. S. District Judge Leonie Brinkima (who has jurisdiction) thinks he should file his request where he resides in prison in Colorado. As recently as 2018 he referred to himself as ‘Slave of Allah.’ Some do not take his recent change of heart seriously…others do (https://news.yahoo.com/sept-11-convict-now-says-151836707.html). Quoting the Associated Press article that appeared yesterday: ‘He’s been there 14 years. It’s a long time to think about what you’ve done,’ said Katherine Donahue, an anthropology professor at Plymouth State University in New Hampshire. ‘I don’t see him lying … there were so many ways he could have helped himself before by lying’ but he didn’t.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Sounds like an act of convenience, not an act of sincerity.”

Biblical Response:  “I’m with you…sort of. I mean, you may be right about his heart…though you or I cannot judge anyone’s heart (we have trouble even judging our own heart,,,everything a man does looks right in his own heart). Which is probably why we should leave heart-judging to God (Jer. 20:12). But let’s assume, for a moment, that he is sincere…so? He was sentenced for the crime he did on a certain date in the past. Present repentance may change his eternal future, but you can’t change the past. The people who died in the 9/11 attacks are just as dead. His change of heart, even if true, shouldn’t change his punishment for crimes done.”

“Christians? We believe in (and promote) a change of heart (though Moussoui has renounced terrorism, not Allah). In fact, a change of heart is essential in being born again (John 3:3-7).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to welcome a true change of heart…in eternity…and exact punishment that is due in temporality; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

When It Rains, It Pours

What’s Happening: “This Wednesday, cyclone category-4 Amphan is due to hit the coast of India.  The last time a category-4 cyclone hit India (1999 cyclone Odisha), it killed nearly 10,000 people. By itself, bad news.  Except the country also reported its highest number of new COVID-19 cases (almost 5,000) just Sunday. There was another 4,600 Monday. To date, India has reported over 100,000 cases with 3, 164 deaths..this wou;ld be bad enough, but social distancing requirements have reduced the effective maximum for evacuation centers from 500,000 to 200,000 (https://news.yahoo.com/india-hit-super-cyclone-same-111022940.html). Quoting from the Business Insider article:. ‘Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the National Disaster Management Authority on Monday, according to The Times of India. The West Bengal government halted port operations and began evacuating people from the coast on Tuesday morning, the newspaper reported.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “They just can’t seem to catch a break….”

Biblical Response:  “Being a predominantly Hindu country, I won’t encourage them to pray. Besides, to which of their over 300,000,000  gods do I direct them? Still, I can sympathize with them (Rom. 12:15). It’s time for Christians to shine. The sick and water-soaked can have some relief if the Christians will minister to them. In fact, this can give Christians a chance to shine (Matt. 5:13-16).”

“Most people’s theology wants to blame storms, plagues, etc. on the devil …and I’m sure he’ll take credit for it. Regardless, calamity gives us an opportunity to demonstrate love and servant-leadership. This will also give us an opportunity to share the Good News…in its time…sometimes a hungry person’s stomach is growling too loud to hear your testimony.”

“Christians? We believe that true love should be borne out by actions, not just words (John 13:35; 14:11). Remember the old Christian song: ‘They’ll Know We Are Cheristians By Our Love’?”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to care, whether it’s convenient or not; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
