What’s Happening:  “Three separate doctors from Texas, in line to get into the Kavanaugh hearings by the Senate’s Judiciary Committee, witnessed money  changing hands and said so on their websites…from the beginning of the hearing, interrupting protesters have had to be arrested (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/protesters-paid-say-3-doctors/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-CT&utm_campaign=dailypm&utm_content=conservative-tribune). ‘Hey everybody, I’m Dr. Chris Dundas from Corpus Christi, Texas, and we’re up here for these hearings. I gotta tell you, it is very sad. This is a very time-honored procedure and a process, and these young people (mostly young people, some old people), they seem to have no heartfelt convictions why they are here. If you have to pay somebody to protest, that’s a pretty good tell…’”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Don’t the protesters have freedom of speech?”

 

Biblical Response:  “Yes…and I guess they have the right to be paid…of course, there are decorum issues, as well. I guess that’s why they were arrested by Capitol Police. It’s kind of sad how this process has devolved. Give the obstructionists the Congress in the midterms and all this will go away…I think I can put up with the noise…it’s a cheap price for progress.”

 

“Christians? Money has historically been the price for betrayal (Matt. 26:15). They say ‘follow the money’…of course, we know where it will lead. We must be better than that.”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to find the balance our Framers wrote into the Constitution and heed the challenge (Sen. Ben Sasse) for everyone to do their job; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “Colin Kapernick is a lightning rod…that can be good news or bad news; Nike hopes it’s good news, having made him their poster child, rolling out yesterday an ad campaign featuring the kneeling former NFL malcontent…immediately their stock began falling (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/nike-announces-kapernick-new-ad-suffers-devastating-economic-defeat-next-day/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-CT&utm_campaign=dailypm&utm_content=conservative-tribune). Typical of the comments on this action is ‘Steverino’s’; ‘NIKE has made a terrible error in identifying their target audience. Yes it is the kids that wear their product but it is the ADULTS that pay for the kids sneakers. Or should I say used to pay for!’”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Wasn’t he just protesting police brutality?”

 

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, I think that’s how he started… of course, the socks and t-shirt, etc., may have sent  different messages. Nobody wants innocents brutalized…but during the National Anthem may not be the best time to protest, either. The National Anthem should be a time when Americans celebrate national unity, and acknowledge that freedom isn’t free. Brave men and women have paid dearly for the right  for the rest of us to play something so trivial as football. Nike’s marketing executives need to be fired. Who in their right mind ever thought it would be helpful to their brand to pick a spokesman so divisive?!”

 

“Christians? Of course, we should expect some opposition (read: persecution) if we are going to take a stand for Christ (1 Pet. 4:12-16), but I did say take a stand! Kneeling is for prayer, and I don’t think Colin was praying for the police!”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we don’t want to ‘strain at a gnat,’ we do need to acknowledge when someone sacrifices for us…we show respect for You; help us to show respect for ALL those who’ve laid down their lives; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “The People’s Republic of China (ROC) has announced a ‘Belt and Road initiative’ (BRI) promising $60 Billion in aid, loans and grants…amid accusations of a new colonialism. China considers Africa the forgotten continent…missionary organizations disagree (https://www.yahoo.com/news/china-raises-fears-apos-colonialism-173840507.html). ‘”Unilateralism and protectionism are on the rise. Economic growth lacks robust drive, China-Africa cooperation under the BRI is a way to common prosperity that brings benefits to both our peoples,’ President of China, Xi said.”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What’s wrong with a little investment capital? Everybody could use that.”

 

Biblical Response:  “It’s the strings that are attached that I’m worried about (sure, I know they said ‘no strings attached’ – but does anybody really believe they are altruistic?) Money equals influence in this world. It would be great if the Chinese Christian believers would see this  for the opportunity it is…the jury is still out on us.”’

 

“Christians? While money may be the tender of worldly influence, sacrifice is the tender of Godly influence. David Livingstone, Scottish physician, explorer and missionary to Africa in the 19th Century, sacrificed much and his influence for the kingdom lives on; but too much motivation by poachers and diamond-miners has spoiled much of his more pure motives. Missions work must continue (Matt, 28:18-20) with renewed vigor or the ‘dark’ continent will only have the ‘false light’ of Islam or investment capital with strings.”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help our Chinese brethren  to seize an opportunity as it presents itself; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “MSNBC conveniently cropped out U.S. Muslim leader, Louis Farrakhan, at Aretha Franklin’s 8-hour funeral extravaganza. Sitting next to Al Sharpton, former President Bill Clinton,  and Jesse Jackson was vociferous Jew-hater Farrakhan…however, Franklin’s friend (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/msnbc-posts-disastrous-tweet-aretha-franklin-attendees-blatantly-removes-farrakhan-image/?ff_source=Email&ff_medium=CTBreaking&ff_campaign=breaking&ff_content=conservative-tribune). Quoting the article, ‘And as for the media (ABC also cropped out Farrakhan as Twitchy noted), editing Farrakhan out of the picture does no favor to Franklin or the truth.’”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Sounds like Fake News.”

 

Biblical Response:  “Kind of…at least news without an inconvenient reality. The media would have done better to explain him away than to edit him out. Actually, they did neither…as the live stream reveals.”’

 

“Christians? Christendom is full of inconvenient truths…like ‘The wages of sin is death’ (Rom. 3:23) or ‘Bad company corrupts good morals’ (1 Cor. 15:33 NASU)…or my personal (and relevant) favorite: ‘You can’t heal a wound by saying it’s not there…’ (Jer. 6:14 TLB).”

What’s Happening:  “Everyone was suspecting something might be up (well, at least I was) when it was announced that the U.S. and Mexico had reached a trade deal…and one talk-show host is willing to say it: Yep…Mexico just paid for the wall, but didn’t even know it (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/trump-got-mexico-pay-wall-dems-didnt-notice/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=CTBreaking&utm_campaign=breaking&utm_content=conservative-tribune). But Trump tweeted: ‘Our new Trade Deal with Mexico focuses on FARMERS, GROWTH for our country, tearing down TRADE BARRIERS, JOBS and having companies continue to POUR BACK INTO OUR COUNTRY. It will be a big hit!’ Would you announce to the world you had just hoodwinked a country?”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “No way!”

 

Biblical Response:  “Way! Wayne Allyn Root is just a talk radio host and that doesn’t matter much (which may be by design), but we have just made a deal which benefits us many times more than the cost of a border wall. I know we don’t have a deal with Canada…yet.’

 

“Christians? Our whole belief system is based on Somebody else paying for something…it’s because Jesus paid for our freedom that we are free (John 8:31-36), not because we paid for anything! Not that we aren’t willing, but the payment would just have been insufficient (Heb. 9:22-28).”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help me to not be so proud as to reject when the freedom You offer costs me nothing, but You everything; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “When Amy Moffat apparently fell asleep at the wheel last Sunday, rolling the F-150 that she and her newlywed husband (Stephen Graham) were in going to their honeymoon in Canada and killing them both, I’m sure she was surprised (https://www.yahoo.com/news/newlywed-couple-killed-crash-way-193756547.html).  Quoting from an article by his employer, ‘“It is incredible how fast time passes by. How we think that those we love will be there the next day. It is hard to reconcile that he is gone, but his life, his passing, and his love for his beautiful wife Amy will always symbolize for us to live life to the fullest, don’t take a day for granted, and love those around you deeply.’”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Oops!”

 

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, there’s no guarantee of tomorrow (or of our kids’ or grandkids’ tomorrows – truly, they are only on loan). Their temporality in a fallen world is uncertain. Sometimes, we are stupid. Sometimes,  there is collateral damage to ours or others’ stupidity. These things are mostly unpredictable.”

 

“Christians? No less tragic is the unexpected (or even expected) death of a loved one…except a Christian knows this is not the end (1 John 2:17). Sure, temporality affects us all, but we have the assurance of eternity (John 6:54).”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, let us not take anything for granted, least of all, tomorrow; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “A letter from Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano was published on two conservative Catholic platforms and said Pope Francis knew about sexual abuse by former Cardinal McCarrick in 2013 and should resign. The Pope said, ‘I won’t say a word about it.’ (https://www.yahoo.com/news/catholic-cardinal-calls-pope-francis-123218998.html). Some defended Vigano, some attacked him. I guess partisanship is alive and well, even in the Catholic Church.”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “From within or without, the Catholic Church is going down!”

 

Biblical Response:  “Probably not. The Catholic Church existed long before any of us came on the scene, and it’s likely they will exist long after we are gone. Still, it’s embarrassing to have the unrighteous world call you on the carpet. Perhaps you’ve heard the saying: ’Humble yourself…or be humbled.’ (Matt. 23;12)”

 

“Christians? It’s sad (and confusing) when we have a double standard (one we recommend…and another, more lenient one, we live by). When we refuse the private discipline of the Lord, He’ll put our business on the street. Change is what He’s after, We can take the easier route…or the harder one. (Heb. 12:6)”

What’s Happening:  “A dad of one of the former youth pastor’s victims punched out the guilty  pedophile in a courtroom and is being hailed as a hero by many. Kevin Smith fairly flew across the courtroom to land a punch on Donald Courtney Biggs, 40, as he sat behind the defense table at a sentencing hearing where he listened to two hours of victims’ testimony (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/pedophile-preacher-left-pile-floor-victims-dad-catches-courtroom/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=CTBreaking&utm_campaign=breaking&utm_content=conservative-tribune). Quoting an article by Cillian Zeal, ‘Biggs, a former Youth Pastor at Mountain Christian Fellowship, had pleaded guilty to one count of transportation with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity with a minor, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s office for Oregon.’”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I’ll bet Mr. Smith’s only regret is that he couldn’t carry a gun into the courtroom!”

 

Biblical Response:  “Probably. I may have acted the same, so it’s hard to throw stones. Still, the Lord does say: ‘Vengeance is mine. I will repay’ (Deut. 32:35, Rom. 12:19; Heb. 10:30). And I would surely not want to get in the way of His justice. Some might, indeed, argue that Mr. Smith was a part of that vengeance. Perhaps. One thing’s for sure, God takes a dim view of claiming to be a minister and using that title of trust to take advantage of others. Maybe Biggs has confessed before God and received forgiveness..if not…of course, there is temporal consequence (prison…punching) and eternal consequence – the imprisonment sand punching are hardly worth mentioning.”

 

Christians? We are called to exhibit self control (Gal 5:22-23). Trusting in our justice system may be frustrating, but we should trust in God’s ultimate justice. He is quite able to exact justice where it might appear no punishment is sufficient.”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to only and always trust in You; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “A 9-year-old boy, Jamel Myles, declared himself to be gay last summer and after four days of bullying at school, committed suicide. He started wearing fake nails to school and apparently took the other students’ recommendations to kill himself…he was found at home (https://www.denverpost.com/2018/08/27/denver-elementary-student-suicide/). ‘My child died because of bullying. My baby killed himself,’ said the boy’s Mom, Leia Pierce.”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Where do kids even get the idea to question their sexuality at that age?!”

 

Biblical Response:  “Have you been asleep…or are you just totally unaware of the culture war going on all around you? With transgenders reading storybooks to kindergartners and gay pride parades celebrating society’s acceptance of the homosexual community…and the adding of the ‘Q’ (Questioning) to the LGBT moniker…no wonder a boy thinks he should be a girl. Add to that the cruel reality of childhood bullying and the rise in childhood suicide rates and you get tragedy.”

 

Christians? We believe the greatest tragedy of all is that the concept of a loving God, Who (by the way) does not make gender mistakes when He creates us, has been removed from public schools (Engel v. Vitale, in 1963). The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 (passed by the Second Continental Congress) created the impetus for public schools and stated (Sect., 14, Article 3): ‘Religion, morality, and knowledge, being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.’ Our Founders knew something we’ve obviously forgotten. God help us (Phil. 4:6)!”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, forgive our stupidity of trying to be ‘tolerant’ …of trying to please everybody…and disappointing You;  in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

What’s Happening:  “John McCain, 81, died Saturday after succumbing to brain cancer, having fought that disease for over a year, and will lie in State at the rotunda of the Capitol, one of only 31 that have been accorded that honor in 166 years (all the way back to President Lincoln). He was a graduate of the Naval Academy, was shot down over Vietnam where he was captured and spent over 5 years imprisoned there, served terms in the House and Senate and even ran for President, though unsuccessfully. He will be sorely missed (https://www.wkyc.com/article/news/nation-now/john-mccain-to-lie-in-state-at-us-capitol-an-honor-bestowed-on-only-30-other-people/465-16c6929c-756b-420c-a4f9-0898b97106b1). Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell said McCain was ‘a great American patriot, a statesman who put his country first and enriched this institution through many years of service.’”

 

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Wasn’t he one of Trump’s thorns in the side?

 

Biblical Response:  “He did vote against repealing Obamacare at the last minute…as a Republican that was almost unforgivable. Still, he was his own man, and that, for a politician is saying something….in fact, that might be what separates many politicians from statesmen. Most truly great men (or women) don’t consciously build a legacy…they just let the chips fall where they may and end up judged ‘great’ by history (Alexander the Great, Peter the Great, etc., come to mind). In other words, you don’t build a lasting legacy by building a legacy.”

 

Christians? The Scriptures admonish us: ‘For they loved the praise of men rather than God’ (John 12:43). Or as I like to say. ‘I’d pat you on the back, but your hand is in the way.’ Anytime we have to be concerned about what our actions may be saying to a future generation…we probably shouldn’t.”

 

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us build a legacy by surprise…and may it be worthy of emulation;  in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
