Picking at a Scab

What’s Happening:  “Just when it looked like Julian Assange’s latest ploy at solving his Ecuadoran Embassy ‘cell’ situation (Quito – Ecuador’s capital – declared him a citizen of their country on Dec. 12), he uses WikiLeaks contacts to notify the world of his support of Catalonia’s independence drive, not a wise move for someone who makes enemies faster than friends (https://www.yahoo.com/news/ecuador-grants-citizenship-wikileaks-founder-assange-foreign-minister-173828863.html). ‘We have reminded Mr Assange that he has no reason to interfere in Ecuadoran politics because his status does not allow it. Nor in that of nations that are our friends,’ said Ecuador’s President Lenin Moreno. “

Knee-jerk Response: “Assange’s leaking of documents makes for interesting reading.”

Biblical Response:  “This may be true, but the end doesn’t justify the means. There are many leaks in the White House (though less now that Gen. Flynn has taken over); and they may be entertaining, but that doesn’t make them good…or right. You may argue that the public has a right to know. Aren’t some secrets better kept? There are things in everyone’s life that only glorify the enemy’s handiwork if revealed…that’s certainly true in mine. If we can’t let regret teach us, how are we ever to learn the lessons of mistakes made? The entertainment value of others’ errors is not the standard by which secrets should be judged. Besides, how can a person be healed if scabs are only for picking?

“Christians? We should never reward rumor-mongers, gossipers, or talebearers (Pro. 20:19). Just because something is salacious doesn’t mean revealing it is a good thing…it only increases ratings or sells more issues. We are for telling the truth…but discreetly.”

Fear Works

What’s Happening:  “The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted raids of 98 7-Elevens in 17 states (making 21 arrests). That and Trump’s tough talk on immigration during the campaign has reduced illegal border crossings since his election(today’s numbers are the lowest since 1971). Calling the recent outreach to both parties on creating a solution for DACA (the so-called ‘dreamers’)immigrants a ‘bill of love,’ Trump seems to be having a little compassion for those brought to America by parents seeking illegal work…much to conservatives’ consternation (https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/01/11/577271488/ice-targets-7-eleven-stores-in-nationwide-immigration-raids). ‘Today’s actions send a strong message to U.S. businesses that hire and employ an illegal workforce: ICE will enforce the law, and if you are found to be breaking the law, you will be held accountable,’ said ICE Deputy Director Thomas D. Homan.”

Knee-jerk Response: “Some of them really do want work.”

Biblical Response:  “Of course. That’s not the point. The fact that most illegals have a good work ethic, or just want to feed their families, etc., is not the point, either. What is the point? Don’t we need cheap labor? Yes, but you only have a country when you can control who gets admitted. If that means more raids, or employer discipline, or even a wall, so be it. No employer likes paying more for good help. Believe me I know (talk to me sometime about the illegals who worked hard at reasonable wages, who paid good money for SS numbers that were fake…that I had to fire in my landscape business). The point is that low wages keep finished products at artificially low prices. And those jobs should be going to those who are citizen-taxpayers. It might make prices go up, but taxes will go down because the demand for support services will go down, too (free education, food stamps, etc.).

“Christians? We want to be merciful, but we want to respect the law, too (Heb. 13:16-17). We can and should do both. When the Church allows the government to be the main or sole source of help, we promote their valueless  handouts. At least we preach a Gospel that can transform more than a hungry body or mind…how about ministering to the soul? The government can’t do that and still be neutral…hmmm.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help our leaders to promote what is right and deter what is wrong. Help us to do that, too; in Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

Third World (and U.S.) Beware

What’s Happening:  “Although there are many playing with the idea of Oprah Winfrey actually making a bid for the Democratic Nomination for President in 2020, she may have trouble once everyone knows about her reported clandestine meeting in 2009 with George Soros, Bill Gates, David Rockefeller, Ted Turner and other billionaires concerning plans to depopulate the world, beginning with Third World countries (https://www.infowars.com/scandal-oprahs-world-depopulation-scheme-dashes-presidential-hopes/). Although I have a Snopes Fact/Check submission pending, the above article actually quotes Stacy Palmer, editor of the Chronicle of Philanthropy, “Normally these people are happy to talk good causes, but this is different – maybe because they don’t want to be seen as a global cabal.”

Knee-jerk Response: “Surely this will end Oprah’s chances.”

Biblical Response:  “I wouldn’t say ‘surely’ to anything political. Still, if it’s true, the left will deny it and the right will decry it. Which may prove interesting or entertaining (read: ratings-building) in the debates. Ever since Paul Ehrlich’s Population Bomb (which I have read) and Soylent Green (which I have seen – it’s a Charleton Heston/ E.G. Robinson movie that came out in 1973), the left has come out with many a dire prediction of the consequences of over-population.

“Christians? Although abortion-rights advocates have their input, wars, famines and plagues have regularly depopulated the world…without their help. Then there’s the purges of Communism which reportedly claimed 100 million lives just in the 20th Century. Besides, technology has more than kept pace with the world’s needs. Crop production and standard of living is at an all-time high, even in ‘third world’ countries. Doesn’t the Word of God promise: “ While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” (Gen. 8:22 KJV)?

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, although we all have a tendency to be somewhat ‘Chicken Little’ in our fears, send us the comfort of Your Holy Spirit to calm us; and may we be sensitive to hidden agendas and the truth; in Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

Duh! You Think?!

What’s Happening:  “A couple of Apple’s investors (controlling collectively over $2 billion in stock) have written the board of the tech giant complaining that there is a growing body of evidence that the over-use of technology might be harming kids’ brains (https://www.yahoo.com/news/investors-urge-apple-tackle-growing-231350306.html). “We’re not software engineers, and we don’t pretend to be,” one of them said. “And we’re not doctors and we don’t pretend to be. What we’re saying is, hey, software engineers, hey doctors, get together and form a real effort to understand this issue better and go where the research takes you.”

Knee-jerk Response: “What’s bad about technology?”

Biblical Response:  “Nothing, in itself, but it does do all your critical thinking for you and for kids…well, maybe they need to play outside more. The problem with many devices is also their greatest asset:  they do things for you that you don’t have time to do for yourself….an asset for adults who never have enough time, but not for kids with developing brains. Kids not only need to develop their brains, but also their social skills. They need to learn how to make real friends, not just virtual ones.”

“Christians? Lessons like ‘bad company corrupts good morals’ (1 Cor. 15:33) should be learned on the playground or in the neighborhood (or in that now old-fashioned Bible)…it’s sure not taught on Facebook or your smartphone. Technology was intended (by God) to be a blessing, not a curse. Of course, parents might have to turn away from their smartphones long enough to tell their children: ‘No.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to not allow what was supposed to be a blessing to become a distraction (or a curse); in Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

Late But Appreciated

What’s Happening:  “The attendance of Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi at a Christmas Mass last Saturday in the new cathedral of Orthodox (Coptic) Christianity was a historic gesture of solidarity. Pope Tawadros II, the Orthodox Christian pontiff, walked arm-in-arm with el-Sissi into the heavily-guarded church constructed in Egypt’s new Administrative Capital, 28 miles from Cairo  (https://www.yahoo.com/news/egypt-tightens-security-ahead-coptic-christmas-144156946.html).  “We, with the grace of God, are offering a message of peace and love from here, not just to Egyptians or to the region, but to the entire world,” el-Sissi said.

Knee-jerk Response: “I guess that marks the end of the persecution of Coptic Christians.”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not…as long as there are militant Islamacists to kill and harass Christians (of Coptic origin or of any flavor), there will be persecution. Just because our ‘Christian’ nation rarely experiences this level of persecution does not mean it doesn’t happen daily around the globe. Besides, there will never be peace on earth until the Prince of Peace is ruling in the heart of every man…and I don’t see that happening anytime soon.”

“Christians? We should not be surprised by violent persecution (John 15:18; Matt. 10:36). Neither should we be unprepared (Ezek. 33:6). We, of course, should be prepared to lay down our lives for even those who hate us (Rom. 5:8). Didn’t Christ, Himself, give us the example?”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we want to be gracious, especially toward our enemies, help us to be wise (Matt. 10:16); in Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

Standing Up for Those Who Laid Down

What’s Happening:  “There has been a flurry of activity at the U.N. over Iran – in Tehran, peaceful protesters of their government elicited support from Trump; Nikky Haley, America’s Ambassador to the U. N., has called for an open meeting of the Security Council; in Moscow, Sergei Ryabkov, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, argued that as Iran did not pose an international threat, they should not be on the council’s agenda; etc. (https://www.yahoo.com/news/us-seeks-un-emergency-meeting-iran-friday-211619638.html). “The United States continues to interfere both openly and covertly in the internal affairs of other countries. They do so shamelessly,” Ryabkov said. ”

Knee-jerk Response: “Does anything the U.N. does really matter?”

Biblical Response:  “I can see where you are coming from…no power to enforce their ‘resolutions’ and all…still, the media ensures that what they say matters (and sanctions do have some effect).. Besides, the deaths of many (21 protesters have laid down their lives since December 28) cry out for justice. What will come of it all? Some say another war-torn Syria. Others, that the Iranian regime will put down this uprising like they have done others…with horrendous purges.

“Christians? Of course, prayer is in order (Phil. 4:6). And we should support those voices that call for freedom (John 8:32). There is a price, however, short-term and long-term. In the short-term, there may be no alternative to blood. Freedom will prevail, no doubt…eventually…but what will be the price in blood? Long-term? Freedom, once acquired, requires ongoing maintenance (read; responsibility and sacrifice).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to communicate to everyday Iranians the lessons we have learned (and are learning) in the struggle for our own freedoms; in Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 1-5-18 High-ly Objectionable

High-ly Objectionable

What’s Happening:  “Although the state of California (and Maine and Massachusetts later this year) have just three days ago approved marijuana for recreational use (joining 6 other states), the DOJ rescinded five memos of Barack Obama that loosened federal enforcement of the illegal substance. Twenty-eight states have already approved medical marijuana (https://www.yahoo.com/news/california-recreational-marijuana-sales-begin-slideshow-wp-203454790.html). What effect will this have on insurance claims, court proceedings, arrests for drug sales or possession, harder drug addiction, etc., all remains to be seen. ”

Knee-jerk Response: “I didn’t inhale.”

Biblical Response:  “Riigghhtt! Neither did Bill Clinton…or so he says. There are some folks that find the whole marijuana issue ‘high-ly objectionable’ (pun intended). Where will our culture land on this issue? If recent trends are any indication, there will be a doorway for recreational use by the approval of medical use. I look for nationwide recreational use (and federal approval) by mid-century…incrementalism.

“Christians? As far as behavior is concerned, alcohol can be just as injurious (Eph. 5:18). We are not to be enslaved to anything, but Christ (1 Cor. 6:12; 7:22-23). Besides, what does the legalization of anything have to do with Christians? We have the Word of God to live by, and in the Judgment, that is what standard will be ussd, not the U.S. Code. Thank God for Jesus’ sacrifice!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to measure ourselves by Christ, not our culture; in Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent
