CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-25-18

The Loneliest Job

What’s Happening: “18-year-old Aldi Novel Adilang, was adrift for 49 days before he was rescued by a Panamanian-flagged vessel off Guam having floated off his moorings over 1,000 miles away. His job as a lamplighter on a floating shack designed to attract fish with a light may be the loneliest task on the planet. He gets paid by his Indonesian employer just $130/month (https://www.yahoo.com/news/indonesian-teenager-rescued-drifting-7-weeks-sea-092843308.html). He said he survived on fish and salt water wringed from wet clothes when his supplies ran out. This is the third time this season his raft has broken its moorings.

Knee-Jerk Response:  “This is where you learn to talk to yourself or go crazy.”

Biblical Response:  “Indeed, one might wonder at the boy’s sanity for even taking the job in the first place! I guess it depends on your options…or your destiny. The thought that Christ CHOSE to go o the cross for us (Luke 22:42) makes many question His sanity…or His power. The only reason His act is not considered suicide (he submitted to his capture even healing one of his captors – John 18:10), is that He had the right to lay down His life (John 10:18).”

“Christians? Being a lamplighter might indeed be the loneliest job on earth (though we might argue we are all called to be Lamplighters),but dying for Mankind’s sin is a lonely task, too (Matt. 2:55-56).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, let us take solace in the fact that You will supply sufficient grace for the task at hand…with the calling comes the strength; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 9-24-18 Death en Masse

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-24-18

Death en Masse

What’s Happening:  If blood cries from the ground (Gen. 4:10) the sound must be deafening from Veracruz, Mexico. 250 skulls have been located in a mass grave (many of them children that have gone missing) alongside their clothes (which may aid in their identification) and are probably a direct result of the war declared on the drug cartels by the government nearly a decade ago (https://www.cnn.com/2017/03/15/americas/mexico-mass-grave-skulls-found-veracruz/index.html). ‘”They give us just the bones, but at least I can have them, I can keep it some place where it won’t be rained on, where I can put a flower on it,” a woman told a CNN reporter.

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess fighting the cartels doesn’t pay.”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe not in the short-term…everyone who died (some were kidnapped, tortured, then executed) should be regarded as heroes…freedom fighters trying to take their country back. In the long run, their blood spilled, some voluntarily, some involuntarily, will found a country free of drugs and prosperous. At least that is the vision some have.”

“Christians? Nobody’s for the indiscriminate taking of lives…except the drug cartels…and they’ll get their just desserts….here, there or both. Freedom isn’t free. Sacrifice is often required (Heb. 9:22). Christ’s death purchased freedom in eternity…temporality may require similar sacrifice.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to mete out justice where we can and count on Your judgement for the rest; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 9-20-18 The Responsibility of Stewardship

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-20-18

The Responsibility of Stewardship

What’s Happening:  “Calls came for charges of attempted murder by Ann Coulter (and others) for leaving dogs caged to drown by rising flood waters, the aftermath of hurricane Florence (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/ann-coulter-calls-attempted-murder-charges-video-shows-6-dogs-left-drown-nc/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-CT&utm_campaign=dailypm&utm_content=conservative-tribune). Reporter Marcus DiPaola tweeted: ‘Rescued six dogs in Leland, NC, after the owner LEFT THEM locked in an outdoor cage that filled with flood water that was rapidly rising. We got them out, but by the time we left, the water was so high that they would have drowned. BRING YOUR PETS WITH YOU!’ Although he didn’t actually make the rescue, he did film it all.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “They’re just dogs. What’s the big deal?”

Biblical Response:  “Spoken like a true NON-STEWARD! There is a hierarchy of value that should have (and does) place humans above animals, but pet ownership comes with certain responsibilities. Anybody who can’t treat pets with the dignity and care they deserve should not own. Animals are totally dependent on the actions (or inactions) of their owners. Pets should NEVER be left to starve or drown and there are laws (cruelty to animals) that can and should be enforced.”

Christians? We were given stewardship of all of creation by God (Gen. 2:15); it was our first job. That we have given over that job to the devil does not abrogate our culpability in the matter. Otherwise, we might be lumped in with those evil stewards the Lord talks about (Matt. 33-41).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give us the compassion of the greater-over-the-weaker that You obviously demonstrated by Your death for us: in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 9-19-18 The Latest Tack

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-19-18

The Latest Tack

What’s Happening:  “That a PR firm might be behind the latest attempt at scuttling the Kavanaugh nomination to the Supreme Court may not come as a surprise to many more conversant on social media, but this latest barrage will definitely mean that his nomination won’t sail through the committee or the full Senate. Both are scheduled for questioning on Monday (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/pr-firm-kavanaugh-accusations/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=conservative-brief-CT&utm_campaign=dailyam&utm_content=conservative-tribune). Ian Millhiser tweeted:’Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s number is (202)-224-6665. Sen. Susan Collins’ is (202)224-2523. If you live in Alaska or Maine, and don’t want someone credibly accused of attempted rape on the Supreme Court, now is the time to call them.’ Some are pointing to the frequency of the term credibly accused in social media to point out the likelihood of PR firm involvement… or at least concerted coordination.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.”

Biblical Response:  “Except when there isn’t…frankly, I don’t know who is right: accuser or accused. But if mere allegation and innuendo means guilt, then America may be no different than Venezuela…or North Korea…or Iran…etc. A man (or a woman) is innocent until proven guilty. Kavanaugh may have been vetted more than any human alive…and came out clean. This latest stall tactic may be only that.”

“Christians? We cannot be for sexual assault…but neither can we be for those who want to give too much weight to allegation or innuendo. What we need is discernment:

Prov 2:3-7 ASV

‘Yea, if thou cry after discernment, And lift up thy voice for understanding;

If thou seek her as silver, And search for her as for hid treasures:

Then shalt thou understand the fear of Jehovah, And find the knowledge of God.

For Jehovah giveth wisdom; Out of his mouth (cometh) knowledge and understanding:

He layeth up sound wisdom for the upright; (He is) a shield to them that walk in integrity.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help our leaders to listen carefully to the Holy Spirit’s input…and then act upon it; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-18-18

Things Are Rough All Over

What’s Happening:  “Nobody has an exclusive  claim on difficulty. There is a typhoon in China (https://www.yahoo.com/news/china-provinces-braced-heavy-rainfall-typhoon-heads-west-005007148.html), a hurricane is ravaging the coasts of North  and South Carolina (https://www.yahoo.com/news/rivers-rise-rescues-continue-florence-055240405.html), there’s turmoil in Idlib (in neighboring Syria – Turkey fears refugees might flood her border…and Europe’s – Iran and Russia are backing Bashir Al Assad’s offensive against the last rebel holdout) (https://news.sky.com/story/idlib-offensive-fears-of-humanitarian-crisis-mount-as-syrians-flee-homes-11495458, to say nothing of North Korea, etc. ”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Maybe Chicken Little really was right…the sky is falling!”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not. Chicken Little was, after all, an alarmist. Things are bad (and may get worse), but God is not asleep (Ps. 121:4). He uses these things to discipline us because He loves us (Heb. 12:6). ”

“Christians? I’m not saying He authors these calamities, Just that all these things work out for our good (Rom. 8:28). He’s just as upset we live in a fallen world as we are. He just doesn’t waste a crisis, either.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to put things in perspective; to weep with those who weep (Rom. 12:15), but to realize You’re not finished with us, either; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-17-18

It Remains to be Seen

What’s Happening:  “The high school student (now 51) that alleged sexual harassment by then 17-year-old Kavanaugh at a party in a letter to Congresswoman Dianne Feinstein has now identified herself as Christine Blasey Ford. Nobody seems to know for sure why the letter, received months ago, was just released last week or what the GOP is now going to do (https://conservativebuzz.com/2018/09/16/kavanaughs-accuser-steps-forward-gop-confused/). ‘A lawyer from the White House, when asked if Kavanaugh would now withdraw his nomination, said: ‘“No way, not even a hint of it. If anything, it’s the opposite. If somebody can be brought down by accusations like this, then you, me, every man certainly should be worried. We can all be accused of something.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Be sure your sin will find you out!”

Biblical Response:  “Of course…but that doesn’t answer the question: Did he do it? He swears he didn’t…65 other contemporaries said he didn’t (some who don’t align with him politically) (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6173619/65-women-knew-Brett-Kavanaugh-high-school-sign-letter-support.html)…whatever happened to the presumption of innocence? I don’t claim to have inside knowledge, but I think it strange that so horrific an incident was not complained about at the time.”

“Christians? We are used to baseless accusations and innuendo. We have fought that battle before (Acts 4:16-17). We must assume the enemy of our souls (satan, the deceiver, old slewfoot, etc.) will not go ‘peacefully into the night.’ He has an agenda, but so do we (John 10:10). However, we have an advantage…the truth (John 8:32).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to ferret out the truth in a timely manner; help us not to assume anything; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-15-18

It’s Dangerous Alright

What’s Happening:  “Former President Barack Hussein Obama, stumping for a Democratic slate of candidates in Ohio, said it would be ‘dangerous’ not to vote in November. Republicans agreed…but want their candidates to be the beneficiaries of an activated electorate (https://www.yahoo.com/news/obama-stump-cordray-other-democrats-ohio-visit-101347004.html). ‘2016 is over, but President Obama continues to dismiss the millions of voters across Ohio who rejected a continuation of his policies in favor of President Trump’s plan for historic tax cuts, new jobs and soaring economic growth,” Mandi Merritt, Ohio spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Isn’t it just a shouting match?”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, or a ‘Tweeting match…and we know who’ll win that. Who turns out, Democrats or Republicans, will likely determine the outcome of the elections in November. And it should. This is what elected representative government is all about. We have to live by the laws these folks legislate. Scary, huh? If your guy or gal is running, then you’d better show up…if you don’t know who’s running and what he or she stands for,,.then don’t complain when inauguration time comes around.”

“Christians? Everybody wants Christian laws, no Christian wants to run. There’s something wrong with this picture. Things don’t get better by themselves. You might actually have to inconvenience yourself. Sacrifice has always been the cost of progress (1 Tim. 2:6).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to see the danger of inaction…and the blessing of sacrifice; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 9-14-18 High School? Really?!

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-14-18

High School? Really?!

What’s Happening:  “In a last-minute attempt to forestall what most Republicans consider the inevitable confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Sen. Dianne Feinstein turned over a letter to federal investigators regarding an alleged incident that may be from high school. Sen. Feinstein said the letter’s author wants to be anonymous (https://www.yahoo.com/news/sen-feinstein-gives-investigators-she-got-kavanaugh-054814850–politics.html). Feinstein was quoted as saying, she ‘received information from an individual concerning the nomination’ and said the person, ‘strongly requested confidentiality, declined to come forward or press the matter further…’

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Did he do something he regrets?”

Biblical Response:  “Who hasn’t…especially in high school! Is the Judiciary Committee holding Kavanaugh to standard that is unreasonable? We are talking about a lifetime appointment, but who has not done something bone-headed in high school? Isn’t that where we learn about what is acceptable behavior and what isn’t? Isn’t that why juvenile records are expunged?”

“Christians? What is the age of accountability? When does God start holding us accountable for our actions? Of course, He’s God (and there was only One Sinless Man…and they crucified Him!) Maybe the Judiciary Committee should not be casting stones (John 8:3-7).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we are called to judge (1 Cor. 6:3), let us not apply a standard unfairly; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Like Gasoline on a Fire

What’s Happening:  “In case you haven’t been aware (or are living your life in a phone booth…wait, that metaphor is obsolete…or are living your life under a rock), there is a huge officially sanctioned persecution of Christians going on in China. The ‘underground church,’as large as 70 million (excluding Catholics), is under assault with church closings and threats (https://www.yahoo.com/news/prominent-chinese-pastor-defiant-church-closure-104056258.html). A pastor of one such 1,600-member church in Beijing, Jin Mingri, is reported to have said, ‘A church is more than just about a space. It’s about gathering together to worship, it’s about belief.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “At some point, won’t the underground church become extinct?”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not. Historically, some of the Church’s largest periods of growth came during the greatest persecutions (one only has to look at the birth of the underground church in China, when Mao killed 70,000 Christians per month during the Red Guard revolt of the 1970’s). The message of salvation is irrepressible.”

“Christians? We should not be surprised when the world hates us. It hated Him first (John 15:18). How do we respond to persecution? Be led of the Spirit. Some have done good to their persecutors (Rom. 12:21) Others, when threatened with bodily harm, did as they were called to do anyway (Acts 5:40-41). It’s kind of like trying to put out a fire with gasoline (Acts 5:42 through Acts 6:1).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, of course we pray for persecuted believers everywhere, but give us the courage of our convictions and may we do something today that fully convinces others of our primary love of You; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 9-12-18 Failure to Thrive

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-12-18

Failure to Thrive

What’s Happening:  “A recent survey of Millennials (ages 25-34) found that over 26% are still living at home, up from just over 15% in 2000, according to the National Association of Home Builders. It could be that the sharp rise in the average price of a home is to blame…or not (https://www.yahoo.com/news/daily-digit-millennials-still-living-parents-161712228.html). Quoting from one reaction: ‘Millennials prefer the freedom to work only on things that are of interest, then skip out if there is any stress or conflict in the job environment. Their preference for work “gigs” does not allow for the responsibility of home ownership. While past generations learned to cope and even grow in such social work environments, Millennials take the first exit and prefer to play/communicate (read ‘gaming’) in a controllable electronic environment instead..’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What’s wrong with gaming? It seems harmless enough…”

Biblical Response:  “Seems that way…of course, who wouldn’t prefer an artificial reality to having to face the real world? Maybe that’s why there seems to be an uptick in violence, too (many games depict violence the average person would never even contemplate).”

“Christians? We are called to raise our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Eph. 6:4), not to ‘free-range’ parent. Some discipline may be required (Prov. 13:4), and no discipline seems pleasant at the moment (Heb. 12:11). Still, we may have to say, ‘This is going to hurt me more than you’…as unbelievable as it may seem to kids. ”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be wise in our child-rearing, knowing that it may cost in the short-term…but we don’t need to handicap them in the long-term just because we, ourselves, are lazy; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
