Trusting Authority

Presumes Trustworthiness

What’s Happening: “It may be hard for the women of San Mateo County, California to trust cops in the future, but those same cops ask that they not be judged on the actions of one…and he was convicted of sexual assault and may be sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars. A jury found former police officer Noah White Winchester, 35 guilty Wednesday and the breathing of relief was surely palpable, if not audible. He has been held on over $3 million dollars bond (https://www.yahoo.com/news/former-california-police-officer-convicted-010757325.html). ‘The defendant is someone we all entrusted with a uniform, gun and badge and asked to serve our community,’ Deputy District Attorney Alpana Samant said. ‘But what he did was hunt and prey on the most vulnerable women in our society.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What he did was a disgusting abuse of power!”

Biblical Response:  “I agree…and the criminal justice system in America did its job. I’m just sorry that it took so long (the article is a little confusing, but whether the attacks occurred in 2013 or 2015, that’s still a long time for justice). Thankfully, God’s justice is not so…though it may sometimes seem slow (2 Pet. 3:9), His justice is sure…and eternal. One other attribute of God’s nature is His trustworthiness, though we may sometimes wonder (we usually don’t have enough information…we can’t see the end from the beginning like Him – Is. 46:10).”

“Christians? We believe in the trustworthiness of God (our impatience, He patiently tolerates). In fact, we believe that all authority (even earthly authority) is based in Him (Rom. 13:1). It should be easier to trust authority that is trustworthy.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to consider Who stands behind the authority of our earthly authorities, and give them the respect they are due; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
