A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-6-20
It’s Our Job Description
What’s Happening: “Tasmanian Devils, extinct in mainland Australia for 3,000 years, have been reintroduced by the Aussie Ark group (and other conservation organizations), one of seven essential species said to be necessary to reach a balanced ecosystem. The marsupian carnivores were put on the endangered species list when a cancerous facial tumor almost extincted them in Tasmania in the 1990s. Today, less than 25,000 still exist in the wild, down from the 150,000 peak they are believed to have achieved. They weigh about 18 pounds each, have a fierce growl, but are believed to be harmless to humans and cattle (https://www.yahoo.com/news/tasmanian-devils-released-wild-3-034651699.html). Quoting from The Telegraph’s October 4 article: ‘Tim Faulkner, president of Aussie Ark, said the ‘historic’ releases in July and September were the first steps in a project akin to the successful move to return wolves to Yellowstone National Park in the United States in the 1990s.’”
Knee-Jerk Response: “I guess I shouldn’t be hiking in the bush north of Sydney, huh?”
Biblical Response: “Probably not, though they are purportedly harmless to humans (perhaps you’ve been watching too many cartoons). Seriously, my hat’s off to the Aussie Ark group. We all have a Biblical mandate to do as they are doing (Gen. 2:15), though I doubt many of them are so motivated. In fact, the Scripture tells us that all of creation (the Tasmanian Devil, the Polar Bear, and the Snail Darter, too) is eagerly waiting for Man’s (and their) redemption:
‘For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.’ (Rom. 8:19-21 NASU)”
“Christians? Oh, we believe all these scriptures above. In fact, we shouldn’t let these secular conservationists show us up in their zeal. Perhaps we haven’t read what heaven is supposed to be like or the passages in Isaiah 11.”
Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray: “Heavenly Father, help us to view the earth as the sacred trust that it is; in Jesus’ Name, amen.
