A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-8-19

Rep. Omar to Divorce…Again

What’s Happening: “How many marriages is acceptable…for a leader? If they are to be examples for our society….maybe Congresswoman Ilhan has had too many. She signed a document that would have her filing for divorce when she was in Burkina Faso Friday. She is to be divorced from Ahmed Hirsi, the father of her three children. Before Hirsi, there was Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, then Hirsi again, now allegedly she is having an affair with Timothy Mynette, a worker with her campaign…and also married (https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2019/10/07/ilhan-omar-files-divorce-claiming-an-irretrievable-breakdown-her-marriage/). ‘Just like any other family navigating this kind of transition, Ilhan wishes to have their privacy respected for themselves and their children and will not be commenting any further,’ said her attorney, Jaime Driggs, in a statement.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Isn’t that matter her private life and out-of-bounds?”

Biblical Response:  “Yes, it is her ‘private life’ and ‘No’ it is not out-of-bounds. I don’t think with an omniscient God (Ps. 139; Pro. 5:21; 15:3; 24:11; Jer. 23:24; 32:19) there is such a thing as a ‘private life,’ especially for leaders ((Is. 9:16). Is that fair? Maybe not by contemporary standards…but maybe that is part of what is wrong in the ‘swamp’…too many people living by ‘contemporary standards’ and not by the Word of God. Sure, there are reasons for divorce that are biblical, even for God (Matt. 19:9). That doesn’t change the fact that God hates divorce (Mal. 2:16). It’s just one more thing He forgives. But it’s not recommended…at least not for those who hold themselves out as examples (leaders).”

“Christians? We’re against divorce. But we realize the giving of your word (which is what marriage is) should not be done lightly…or lightly dissolved…and sometimes necessary; At the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (when the ‘consummation of the ages’ occurs), He marries us in our glorified (and forgiven) state…and forever!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to be too quick to judge…or forgive where You have not; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
