CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 11-30-19

Impractical But Effective

What’s Happening: “London Bridge was a sight of much heroism as a knifeman and convicted terrorist, Usman Khan, 28, from Staffordshire attacked and killed two and wounded five others early Saturday morning. Khan was wearing a fake suicide vest, but still he was confronted by several hero-bystanders, two of them wielding respectively a 5-foot narwhal tusk and a fire extinguisher.  Emergency Services showed up quickly, killed the terrorist, and restored order (https://www.yahoo.com/news/narwhal-tusk-london-bridge-knife-terror-attack-100142120.html). Boris Johnson praised the bystanders, who did not know the vest was fake, but pursued the attacker anyway: ‘My thanks go first of all to the emergency services, the police for their bravery and their professionalism, and to repeat again my thanks to those members of the public who put themselves in harm’s way to protect others and I think they represent the best of our country and I thank them on behalf of the rest of our country.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Wasn’t the terrorist incarcerated? What was he doing there?”

Biblical Response:  “He was, but apparently he was on day release to attend a rehabilitative lecture. You know those liberal Europeans…they don’t seem to acknowledge the existence of pure evil. Still, I don’t want to make this blog about the terrorist…that just plays into his hand. I want to emphasize the heroism of the bystanders. Really? A narwhal tusk and a fire extinguisher?! Kind of reminds me of Moses and his ‘rod’ (Ex. 4:17). There was nothing special about his rod…or the narwhal tusk…it was really the men who wielded them…and the God behind them. He’ll use any tool to effect His will. We just have to be available and willing. Apparently, they were.”

“Christians? We believe that availability and willingness are hard to find, but exist in the heart of a hero, and the Scriptures are full of examples (a boy kills a giant with a sling and a stone [1 Sam. 17:49], a man slays a thousand men with a donkey’s jawbone [Judges 15:16], a man parts the sea with a staff [Ex. 14:17-27] etc.). The power is not in the boy, the sling, or the stone…or the tusk… it is in the person wielding them…and God.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be available  and willing; …and may our butterflies fly in formation; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Reader:

May I indulge in a little self-promotion? Many of you read CLARITY every day…and you hopefully forward it on to still others. Some even subscribe from the website. Thanks! (One mother wrote that she wanted to subscribe to read it to her children everyday – read away!) However you get CLARITY, would you consider donating on the website? I’m happy to find useful purpose in helping folks stay informed and supplying what I think God has to say on the subjects of the day…still, I want to get this word out to others…which is what I’ll do with your gifts. Thanks in advance.

Blessings,

Alan
