A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-10-20

Missing in Action

What’s Happening: “Being invisible is how the Chinese leader has apparently chosen to deal with the epidemic coronavirus. Sure, he’s instituted quarantine orders in Wuhan, met with World Health Organization executive director Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and assured him he (President XI) was directing the government’s response, etc., but it’s his Premier Li Keqiang that has been visible. He even traveled to Wuhan to meet with doctors there…not good imaging for Xi (https://www.yahoo.com/news/wheres-xi-chinas-leader-commands-164043163.html). Quoting from the New York Times article that appeared yesterday: ‘It’s a big shock to the legitimacy of the ruling party. I think it could be only second to the June 4 incident of 1989. It’s that big,’ said Rong Jian, a writer about politics in Beijing, referring to the armed crackdown on Tiananmen Square protesters that year.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “He’s probably taking his own advice and staying home…”

Biblical Response:  “Probably…but look how that worked out for King David (2 Sam. 11:1-26). War or being in the midst of crisis is no time to go ‘missing in action,’ as Xi will soon learn. David sure did (2 Sam. 1-10). The collateral damage that attends that absence, no matter how well-intentioned, can be devastating – as any missing parent can testify. No number of excuses can make up for the crucial presence of leadership – especially in a crisis.”

“It turns out the coronavirus crisis may have economic repercussions as well. China’s otherwise robust economy is in freefall and competing with the U.S. in trade, the space race, etc. is not good timing for a health crisis.”

“Christians? How should we react to all this? Certainly we should pray (Phil. 4:6), and comfort (Rom. 12:15; 2 Cor. 1:4), but we can also learn a lesson without having to go through a crisis: BE PRESENT. There are many things a country or a family goes through…and they are often better by our being there.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to know what You consider important and act accordingly; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
