A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-11-20

Sounds Biblical…

What’s Happening: “In a Fox News article yesterday, Attorney General William Barr recently filed a lawsuit against so-called ‘sanctuary’ cities, cities where local law enforcement are ignoring ICE detainer requests and releasing criminal immigrants into the community…sometimes to devastating consequence. President Trump particularly detailed in his SOTU address a week ago the tragic case of a criminal alien who was released in New York recently who subsequently raped and murdered a 92-year-old woman (https://www.foxnews.com/politics/barr-announces-new-sanctuary-policies). Quoting Barr: ‘When we are talking about sanctuary cities, we are talking about policies that allow criminal aliens to escape. These policies are not about people who come to our country illegally, but have otherwise been peaceable and productive members of society. Their express purpose is to shelter aliens who have already been arrested by local law enforcement for other crimes. This is neither lawful or sensible.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Didn’t Quasimodo yell, ‘Sanctuary!’ from the turrets of Notre Dame? Isn’t it a biblical practice?”

Biblical Response:  “Perhaps you’ve watched one too many Disney animations (Disney’s protagonist – The Hunchback of Notre Dame – 1996). Really, it’s a throwback to the old Roman Catholic historical sheltering practice. Perhaps it’s a facsimile of the ‘Refuge Cities’ of the Old Testament (Num. 35). In any case, that was only for the accidental ‘manslayer’ (today, we’d say ‘involuntary manslaughterer’). Local law enforcement was tasked with punishing local intentional law offenders. Courts were established to determine offense and intention. ‘Sanctuary’ may sound biblical, but it’s not.”

“Christians? I think it’s our job to guard against others’ co-opting God’s truth. Listen to the following rendering of 1 John 5:21:

‘Dear children, be on guard against all clever facsimiles.’ (the Message)”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to discern quickly and clearly…and protect against all clever deceptions; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
