A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-13-20

On Loan

What’s Happening: “In an article that came out yesterday by NBC News, Lisa Dallow, 48, put into a medically induced coma after she suffered burns over 60% of her body from the volcano that erupted on New Zealand’s White Island, was brought out of the coma only to learn that her husband, Gavin, 53, and her daughter, Zoe, 15, were among the 21 killed. Talk about a tragedy! (https://www.yahoo.com/news/woman-wakes-coma-learn-family-184200353.html) ‘She’s highly emotional, that’s all I can say,” said her father-in-law, Brian Dallow. ‘Naturally, because it would be a severe shock.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “It’s bad enough to suffer so much that survival was in question…then to learn you had lost your family…I can’t even imagine!”

Biblical Response:  “Few of us can. Still, we’ve all been through tragedy…a lost loved one, fighting sickness…and losing…if not ourselves, someone close to us. The one thing we are forced to learn: all are only ON LOAN. And, like any loan, it has a due date. The fact that we don’t usually know when it is, does not change that cold reality. So what are we to do? Heap on those that have been loaned, all the love we can, That is our payment (Rom. 13:8 – ‘Pay all your debts except the debt of love for others—never finish paying that! For if you love them, you will be obeying all of God’s laws, fulfilling all His requirements.’ LB).”

“Creation wasn’t designed this way, but it became this way when man fell (read Gen. 3). Ever since, we have suffered the fate of an expiration date…and it’s always too soon. The Good News is that Someone Who did not deserve death died in our place…and someday He’ll return and rectify the situation.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe it is possible to live forever…even physically (that’s what the resurrection is all about – Jn. 20:27-29; 1 Cor. 4-8; Jn. 11:25-26). But, till that’s a personal reality, we, with all creation, groan (Rom. 8:22); because loved ones are just on loan.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give us the patience and grace to wait for the reality of our future to replace our past; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
