CLARITY – 2-2-18 Depressed

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-2-18

What’s Happening:  “It has been reported today that Fidel Castro Diaz- Balart took his life (committed suicide) at age 68. He spoke four languages, was a nuclear physicist, but had been treated recently for depression. He is the only child of a short marriage between Fidel and Mirta Diaz-Balart, but as Castro’s eldest son and looking a lot like the Communist dictator, he was called “Fidelito” or little Castro. He was in charge of Cuba’s nuclear program from 1980-1992 ( ‘Castro Diaz-Balart, who had been attended by a group of doctors for several months due to a state of profound depression, committed suicide this morning,’ the Cubadebate website said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What does all this mean?”

Biblical Response:  “Simply that power, wealth, and education do not exempt anyone from depression. There are some that will try to spin this into a conspiracy theory…or that he, like his father (who died Nov. 25, 2016) isn’t really dead… etc., but the truth remains: there, but for the grace of God, go we.”

“Christians? Can a Christian be depressed? Yes. Should a Christian be depressed? Of course not. We have everything to look forward to (Heb. 13:5). However, we still live in this world and we have to constantly consider ourselves as citizens of another kingdom (Eph. 2:19), just passing through. We may live in this world, but we don’t have to be of this world (John 15:19:17:14). Besides, in a sense, suicide is really murder as “you are not your own.” (1 Cor. 6:19)

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to exhibit the kind of selflessness that leaves how long we are here up to You, in spite of our misery…and knowing You will supply the grace; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
