CLARITY – 2-6-20 State of the DISunion

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-6-20

State of the DISunion

What’s Happening: “After all the good news…and there was plenty…from a roaring economy to record joblessness and real wage growth…and an international reputation that is both beneficially fearful and respectful (depending on whether you are a foe or an ally)…after all that…after the President’s speech…a show of defiance, disgust, and division was demonstrated by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi when she tore up dramatically the printed copy of his address he had handed her before he began. All this was the final act of defiance from the Democrats who littered the President’s address with groans, audible booing, seating silently (while everyone else was standing and applauding) or some not even attending ( ‘I found out just a few moments later, and I think it was a new low,’ said Vice President Mike Pence yesterday. ‘I wasn’t sure if she was ripping up the speech or ripping up the Constitution.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Trump did ignore her offer of a handshake. Maybe she was just responding to that.”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah? Maybe. Of course, he didn’t shake Mike Pence’s hand, either. I’ve carefully watched the video, and there’s no evidence Trump even saw her outstretched hand. What really has me concerned is the overall disunity in the Congress (and maybe the country? – I guess the next election will tell us a lot). One thing is certain, ‘…a house divided cannot stand’ (Luke 11:17). I’m sure we’ll sort it out…sooner or later, by election, or whatever. What concerns me is that our enemies might try to capitalize on our disunity. What they don’t understand is that our disunity is only temporary. Watch how united we become in the face of a common threat. Hear that Kim Jong-un? Putin? Khomeini? Etc.?”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in the power of unity…a good thing when you are doing good (Mk. 16:20)…a bad thing when you are doing bad (Gen. 11:6). Thankfully, God’s purpose is to oppose the proud and back the play of the humble (1 Pet. 5:5). All we have to do is make sure we’re in the latter camp.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to find ourselves united behind Your purposes; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
