CLARITY – 3-16-18 A Navy Idea that Won’t Float

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-16-18

An Navy Idea that Won’t Float

What’s Happening:  “Can you imagine a Naval  chaplain being an atheist?! That’s what is being proposed…and there are many who oppose it: over 40 Representatives and over 20 Senators have written Gen. Mattis to say so. Jason Heap has tried to sue his way into the chaplain corps before (2015), but his alignment with several secular humanist organizations and several attorneys against him won out in the courts. Not to be discouraged, he is trying again ( Quoting from the letter to the Secretary of the Navy, Richard Spencer: ‘The Chaplain Corps serves religious needs, not philosophical preferences. Approving a secular-humanist chaplain would open the door to other applicants representing other philosophical worldviews. Over time, this situation would erode the distinct religious function of the Chaplain Corps.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “The minorities need to be represented, too.”

Biblical Response:  “Racism is about race, not about parity of philosophical preference. The presence of Naval psychologists should satisfy that. Chaplains are for the other 97% that believe in a God. Again, quoting from the above article: ‘The Department of Defense’s own guidelines also reinforce the uniquely religious purpose of the chaplain corps, defining ‘religious organization’ as ‘an entity that is organized and functions primarily to perform religious ministries to a non-military lay constituency’ and defining a religious ministry professional as ‘an individual endorsed to represent a religious organization and to conduct its religious observances or ceremonies.’”

“Christians?  We should support any effort that reserves pastoral religious duties to non-atheists. Only fools think there is no God (Ps. 14:1). It’s hard, in good conscience, to recommend a religious solution (and naval personnel and their families are faced daily with religious challenges) when you are non-religious…unless, of course, you are willing to admit that secular humanism is a religion…but that’s a discussion for a different day.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help the Secretary of the Navy and the Joint Chief of Staff see the senselessness of appointing an atheist chaplain; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent
