CLARITY – 3-23-20 Conflict is Inevitable

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-23-20

Conflict is Inevitable

What’s Happening: “Talks on prisoner exchange were finally held between the Taliban and the Afghan government Sunday…finally, fruit of a fragile peace accord signed between Afghanistan, the U.S, and the Taliban back on Feb. 29. The prisoner exchanges – eventually 5,000 Taliban and 1,000 Afghans – are the first efforts to end America’s longest war, begun after the bombing on September 11, 2001. There has been a hold-up to the exchanges because Afghan’s President, Ashraf Ghani, wanted to be more involved.  The accord is tenuous, at best ( ‘Today, the US and Qatar facilitated the first Afghan government to Taliban technical talks on prisoner releases, via Skype video conferencing,’ a spokesman said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “It’s hard to blame Ghani. He is the President of Afghanistan!”

Biblical Response:  “True…but it could just be a pride issue. Many conflicts are caused by one party or another defending his position. Even the Bible warns against it:

‘Pride leads to conflict; those who take advice are wise.’ (Prov. 13:10 NLT)”

‘Think back on the conflicts in which you’ve been involved, whether on the playground as a kid growing up, or as an adult at work…say between a boss and a worker. Wasn’t it pride that was really at the root? Somebody was trying to defend something that was said or done?”

“The real problem is what is behind pride. And it’s always the case of a ‘fallen man’ (Gen. 3). In fact, I think that was the serpent’s original temptation (Gen. 3:5-6; 1 John 2:16).”

“Christians? We believe in the destructiveness of pride (Prov. 16:18). And, as long as man stays in a prideful condition, conflict is inevitable. However, peace is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of God.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to lay aside the pride we’re so quick to defend…and make us more like You; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
