A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-12-18

The Gate that Should be There

What’s Happening:  “Fox News’ Charles Payne apologized for not immediately correcting the comment of guest and military analyst Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Tom McInerney, who called Sen. John McCain ‘songbird John,’ claiming torture worked on him (https://www.yahoo.com/news/fox-cuts-ties-guest-cited-134529474.html). ‘I regret I did not catch this remark, as it should have been challenged. As a proud military veteran and son of a Vietnam Vet these words neither reflect my or the network’s feelings about Senator McCain, or his remarkable service and sacrifice to this country,’ Charles Payne tweeted.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Oops!”

Biblical Response:  “You can say that again! Even if true (I wasn’t there,,,neither were you), common decency says you don’t kick a man while he’s down. Remarks made by anyone concerning Sen. McCain (who suffers from a brain tumor) need to be spoken discreetly and respectfully. Most people have a gate between their brain and their mouth. It is unfortunate that some people’s gates are rusted open…or non-existent.”

“Christians? We should be known as much by what we DON’T say as by what we do (Rom. 4:17). As the Scripture says, ‘All things are lawful for me, but not all things are expedient.’ (1 Cor. 6:12).”

”Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, teach us what is truly apropos; help us to win people with the sweetness of our words, not lose them through our indiscretions; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
