CLARITY – 5-5-18 Surprise! Surprise!

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-5-18

Surprise! Surprise!

What’s Happening:  “No, it was not an exclamation from a rerun of Gomer Pyle, USMC (‘Surprise! Surprise!’ was a comment Jim Nabors often made on the series), but it was real. The Kilauea Volcano, located on the Big Island (Hawaii) erupted and surprised residents as 1,500 evacuated at least two subdivisions yesterday. The volcano has been continuously erupting since 1983, so it should have come as no real surprise ( ‘It sounded like if you were to put a bunch of rocks into a dryer and turn it on as high as you could. You could just smell sulfur and burning trees and underbrush and stuff,’ said Jeremiah Osuna, local resident.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Guess I won’t be planning any Hawaiian trips soon!”

Biblical Response:  “Actually, Hawaii’s pretty big (the eruption occurred 220 miles from the Oahu Airport). Besides, many people visit the islands because they WANT to see an active volcano…not too closely, mind you. Building close to a volcano? Well, the insurance is probably high, and eruptions, while maybe disappointing, should be no surprise.”

“Christians? There are a few things that are inevitable…things that can be prepared for, but will, no doubt, occur. Like the Judgement (Heb. 9:27). Any person who does not prepare, or is not sure that God or the judgment exists…may indeed be surprised.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, there are some things that surprise. Help us not to be surprised with the inevitable; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
