A Biblical Response to Current Events -5-7-19

Sorry About Buffy

What’s Happening: “John McCain’s dog died, being drowned by a freak accident in a drain pipe last month, Cindy McCain told the Arizona Republic yesterday. ‘Burma’ never left the Senator’s side, she said, and is with John again (https://www.yahoo.com/news/mccain-family-says-dog-drowned-getting-stuck-pipe-173208710.html). One might ask why, with so much else in the news (Venezuela, Iran, North Korea, China, etc.), this would be the chosen topic today? It is about time that we had a biblical understanding of what happens to pets after they die.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Surely Buffy’s in heaven, right?”

Biblical Response:  “As unsettling as it might be…NO. I mean, it’s clear from Isaiah 11:6-9 that there will be animals in heaven (and I personally believe all species – even the extinct ones – will be there, though I have no scriptures that actually say that, just the character of God – I don’t believe He ever makes mistakes). And from 1 Cor. 15:35-55 we learn that there is one kind of flesh for Man and another for animals. Where we have a soul (that must be saved), animals do not. Sure, pets get bonded to their owners and some take on their owner’s emotional traits…but to say that ‘Buffy” (or Burma) is in heaven, is not very biblical…though no doubt comforting to some.”

“Christians? We should expend our efforts on soul winning, on reasoning creatures. An animal only responds to stimuli according to instinct and training. We assign them human characteristics, especially if we are endeared to them. Does God love and care for animals and should we? Of course, but only as they serve the ones He died for. Sure, He died for all creation (John 3:16), but He only specifically resurrects specific souls.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to see animals as objects, but as sacred trusts to steward over (Gen. 2:15); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
