CLARITY – 5-9-19 Great Responsibility

A Biblical Response to Current Events -5-9-19

Great Responsibility

What’s Happening: “Yesterday, what many have said is the largest cache of weapons ever confiscated from the home of a private individual, was seized and catalogued by the LAPD. Where the over 1,000 weapons, some of them automatics, were seized is just as surprising: Holmby Hills, a posh Los Angeles neighborhood, next door to Beverly Hills and the location of the Playboy Mansion. The owner, Girard Saenz, 57, is being held on $50,000 bond and is accused of illegally selling firearms from his home (–abc-news-topstories.html). ‘I had never seen so many weapons in my career of 31 years,’ said LAPD Lt. Chris Ramirez. ‘That’s such a big arsenal in a residence like this, in this type of neighborhood. It’s astounding.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What about the 2nd Amendment? Doesn’t he have the right to own these guns?”

Biblical Response:  “Own? Yes (except for the automatic weapons). Sell? Perhaps not (I don’t know if he possesses the right permits and licenses, etc.). I’ll let the courts decide. Still, there’s a greater point to be made here. To use (or abuse) the old superhero’s mantra: ‘With great power comes great responsibility.’ And this warning: Those that live by the sword, will die by the sword (Matt. 26:52). Which is NOT to say there is anything wrong with gun (or sword) ownership. After all, Peter didn’t just happen to have a sword in the Garden of Gethsemane, he was instructed to take one (Luke 22:36-38). Training and restraint should be a prerequisite. The first can be taught…the second is more of a character issue.”

“Christians? We believe everyone has the right of self-protection…as it regard those of your own family, even more so (1 Tim. 5:8). However, a certain amount of wisdom should be exercised, especially when it comes to the awesome power of life and death (Rom. 8:6).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us exercise power with the wisdom only You can provide; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
