A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-3-20

A Matter of Programming

What’s Happening: “500 people have been arrested in Omaha since the night of May 29, when white bar-owner Jake Gardner (38) shot and killed black protester James Scurlock (22). Gardner, who claimed self-defense, was not among them. He shot him with a pistol he carried (under an expired concealed carry permit) and though the police have been accused of systemic racism, there seems to be ample eye-witness accounts of being raised racist and examples of racism, and Gardner has been detained and questioned, he still has yet to be charged with anything. A family member recalls Gardner’s father using racial slurs when raising him (https://www.yahoo.com/news/after-a-black-protester-is-killed-in-omaha-witnesses-claim-a-rushed-investigation-ignored-signs-of-the-shooters-allegedly-190303877.html).  Quoting the Yahoo News article posted July 1: ‘After hearing nothing from authorities for more than a week, Heineman (Gardner’s cousin) decided to testify at a public hearing in Omaha, where community members had been invited to address state lawmakers about issues related to police misconduct and racial injustice.”

“‘My family has a laundry list of assault charges and a long history of racism,’ Heineman said at the hearing, describing how ‘sleepless and disturbed’ she felt ‘knowing that all the times my family members used the N-word, which was a lot, all of the times that my family made racist jokes, all of the times that my family ingrained violence into the minds and hearts and souls of their own babies, all of those things were leading up to the death of James.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So don’t move to Omaha, right?”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah…maybe not anywhere in America (though it’s still the only place that has an overtly Christian founding – 53 of the 55 signers of the Declaration of Independence were Christian). There used to be a Christian consensus in America. As evidence, this quote from deist Benjamin Franklin (from his autobiography):

‘It was wonderful to see the change soon made in the manners of our inhabitants. From being thoughtless or indifferent about religion, it seemed all the world were growing religious, so that one could not walk thro’ the town (Boston) in an evening without psalms sung in different families of every street.’

Ben also famously arose at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, after a particularly heated exchange and uttered these words:

‘Mr. President: (He was addressing George Washington, unanimously chosen president of the Constitutional Convention.) The small progress we have made after four or five weeks’ close attendance & continual reasonings with each other…how has it happened, Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of lights to illuminate our understanding!…I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth – that God rules in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writing, that ‘except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.’ I therefore beg leave to move–that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven…be held every morning before we proceed to business…’”

Add to that, that Ben Franklin was arguably the least ‘Christian’ of the Founders, you can understand my historical American Christian concensusus claim.”

“But not any more. We don’t have to go to Omaha…or the 2,000 cities that have held protests since the George Floyd killing…to realize something has changed over the years. Perhaps it was the removal of the Bible and prayer from public schools (Engle v. Vitale – 1962). I guess when you sow the wind, you reap the whirlwind (Hosea 8:7).”

“Christians? We believe in a Christian consensus…not just in America, but the world (Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16). Obviously, in the nearly 2,000 years since those words were uttered  (in the two previous scriptures), we’ve not done our job (so, we are partly to blame for this ‘systemic’, ‘ingrained’ un-Christian thinking). There is no good excuse, so let’s just roll up our sleeves and GET TO WORK!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to repair the breech and restore America to its roots; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
