CLARITY – 8-4-20 “Mostly Dead Means Slightly Alive”

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 8-4-20

“Mostly Dead Means Slightly Alive”

What’s Happening: “Although Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, one of the Boston Bombers (along with his brother, Tamerlan), received a sentence of the death penalty in 2015 for bombing the crowd of the famed Boston Marathon (3 were killed, 260 wounded), a Federal Appeals Court has overturned that. In a tweet August 2nd, Trump echoed the feelings of many when he tweeted: ‘Rarely has anybody deserved the death penalty more…’ Whether the Federal Appeals court will get their retrial on the sentencing phase, or it will go all the way to the Supreme Court remains to be seen ( To quote part of Trump’s tweet: ‘The Federal Government must again seek the Death Penalty in a do-over of that chapter of the original trial.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Whew! I’ll  bet Dzahokhar is breathing a sigh of relief!”

Biblical Response:  “Perhaps prematurely…no matter how it goes. To quote ‘Miracle Max’ in The Princess Bride: ‘Mostly dead means slightly alive.’ I’m sure Billy Crystal had no idea at the time I would quote him in this context. Still, it applies. Earthly temporal justice may be fearful…and it should be…but eternal justice is more to be feared (Heb. 9:27). Of course, Dzhokhar’s judgment is above my pay grade. God alone sees the heart and knows the motives (Jer. 20:12).”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in the final judgment, alright (the scripture in Hebrews, above). Here is a great saying that puts everything in perspective: ‘Justice makes hell necessary; mercy makes heaven possible.’

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to rejoice at temporal justice…and pray for Dzohokhar’s soul; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
