CLARITY – 9-12-18 Failure to Thrive

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-12-18

Failure to Thrive

What’s Happening:  “A recent survey of Millennials (ages 25-34) found that over 26% are still living at home, up from just over 15% in 2000, according to the National Association of Home Builders. It could be that the sharp rise in the average price of a home is to blame…or not ( Quoting from one reaction: ‘Millennials prefer the freedom to work only on things that are of interest, then skip out if there is any stress or conflict in the job environment. Their preference for work “gigs” does not allow for the responsibility of home ownership. While past generations learned to cope and even grow in such social work environments, Millennials take the first exit and prefer to play/communicate (read ‘gaming’) in a controllable electronic environment instead..’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What’s wrong with gaming? It seems harmless enough…”

Biblical Response:  “Seems that way…of course, who wouldn’t prefer an artificial reality to having to face the real world? Maybe that’s why there seems to be an uptick in violence, too (many games depict violence the average person would never even contemplate).”

“Christians? We are called to raise our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Eph. 6:4), not to ‘free-range’ parent. Some discipline may be required (Prov. 13:4), and no discipline seems pleasant at the moment (Heb. 12:11). Still, we may have to say, ‘This is going to hurt me more than you’…as unbelievable as it may seem to kids. ”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be wise in our child-rearing, knowing that it may cost in the short-term…but we don’t need to handicap them in the long-term just because we, ourselves, are lazy; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
