A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-5-18

Branding or Branded

What’s Happening:  “Colin Kapernick is a lightning rod…that can be good news or bad news; Nike hopes it’s good news, having made him their poster child, rolling out yesterday an ad campaign featuring the kneeling former NFL malcontent…immediately their stock began falling (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/nike-announces-kapernick-new-ad-suffers-devastating-economic-defeat-next-day/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-CT&utm_campaign=dailypm&utm_content=conservative-tribune). Typical of the comments on this action is ‘Steverino’s’; ‘NIKE has made a terrible error in identifying their target audience. Yes it is the kids that wear their product but it is the ADULTS that pay for the kids sneakers. Or should I say used to pay for!’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Wasn’t he just protesting police brutality?”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, I think that’s how he started… of course, the socks and t-shirt, etc., may have sent  different messages. Nobody wants innocents brutalized…but during the National Anthem may not be the best time to protest, either. The National Anthem should be a time when Americans celebrate national unity, and acknowledge that freedom isn’t free. Brave men and women have paid dearly for the right  for the rest of us to play something so trivial as football. Nike’s marketing executives need to be fired. Who in their right mind ever thought it would be helpful to their brand to pick a spokesman so divisive?!”

“Christians? Of course, we should expect some opposition (read: persecution) if we are going to take a stand for Christ (1 Pet. 4:12-16), but I did say take a stand! Kneeling is for prayer, and I don’t think Colin was praying for the police!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we don’t want to ‘strain at a gnat,’ we do need to acknowledge when someone sacrifices for us…we show respect for You; help us to show respect for ALL those who’ve laid down their lives; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
