CLARITY – 9-7-19 Apocalypse Now

A Biblical Response to Current Events -9-7-19

Apocalypse Now

What’s Happening: “The island of Abaco in the Bahamas looks like a scene from a horror movie. Hurricane Dorian (a category 5 then) completely destroyed any resemblance to civilized life and desperate people were looting stores – or what remained of them – seeking basic necessities. The Bahamian government has put out an initial death toll of 30, but this will no doubt rise (some say to hundreds or thousands). Sure, there was a ‘mandatory’ evacuation order, but many had ridden out others before. This was unlike anything many of the survivors had seen ( ‘I’ve seen seven dead bodies under a [shipping] container… It looks to me like the 40-ft container flew up and crushed all of them at the same time. The storm was so intense that it picked those things up like paper and flew them around,’ Symonette, a pregnant 23-year-old who is worried her child may have adverse effects from the stress, says.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I’m glad I don’t live there!”

Biblical Response:  “I am, too, but it’s not time to wag our heads at their misfortune…or to congratulate ourselves for our choice to live in an inland state. Samaritan’s Purse is a worthy steward (they are an offshoot of Billy Graham’s ministry –”

“Christians? The scripture, ‘…weep with those who weep…’ (Rom. 12:15) comes to mind, and to not just empathize emotionally, but practically.”

“There was an old toymaker who used to take his wagon and horse to the village daily. Though he’d made the trip for decades, today he was a little too over-laden. The old horse just laid down at the crest of one hill and gave up the ghost. A crowd of sympathizers had gathered around the old man who was weeping and stroking his expired mare’s mane. Suddenly, someone from the crowd took off his cap and passed it around. ‘How sorry are you,’ he asked?”

“I’m asking that same question.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to genuinely care, not just use the calamity of others as an opportunity for fascination; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
