CLARITY – 9-7-20 Failure to Thrive

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-7-20

Failure to Thrive

What’s Happening: “A Time article reported that for the first time youth, ages 18-29, living at home with their parents, was a majority (52%) in July (26.6 million). There is some validity to think that a portion of their motivation might be COVID-19, but the general trend has been increasing since it topped 48% in 1940, mostly due to the Great Depression (although it hit a low in 1960 of 29%, it has jumped to 36% in 1990, 38% in 2000, and 40% in 2010 – last year’s figure of 47% is particularly alarming, too). Some cite economic reasons, some cite college closings due to the pandemic, but the trend has definitely been up over the decades ( Nobody postulated a real reason the trend has been up…maybe this failure to thrive is the result of lack of preparation by busy parents.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Parents are busy these days…what ever happened to Mr. Rogers and Big Bird?””

Biblical Response:  “Other than an obvious opening statement, that response is disturbing on a whole lot of levels! First, let me respond to your question: Mr. Rogers (famed star of a daily children’s TV program) died at 74 in 2003; Big Bird was a children’s favorite faux live stuffed over-size animal, and appeared on the TV program Sesame Street, until the death at 84 of Caroll Spinney, Big Bird’s voice.”

A bigger point is the way we have increasingly let the TV (and now phones and tablets) babysit our children, allowing parents to pursue double incomes…a necessity for chasing the lifestyle our culture demands. The real question is how did we get here? Perhaps with the slide of our culture’s vibrant relationship with Christ (we used to have a Christian consensus in America). has come a sense that pursuit of personal pleasure overrules our responsibility of parenting. It doesn’t (Eph. 6:4; Prov. 22:6).”

“Christians? We believe our culture’s Christian decline is sad…that we need a new ’Great Awakening.’ Is it in the offing? I believe, YES! However, time alone will tell.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to believe for a rejuvenation (2 Chron. 7:14)…and be prepared to make the personal sacrifices in will inevitably cost; in Jesus’ Name, amen.

  1. You’re right. Everything worthwhile costs time, energy, money – sacrifice of some kind.
