CLARITY – 9-9-19 It’s All About Image

A Biblical Response to Current Events -9-9-19

It’s All About Image

What’s Happening: “The recent mass shootings (two in Texas – El Paso and Odessa – one in Dayton, Ohio) have spawned several ‘mandatory buyback of assault weapons’ proposals, many of them by 2020 Presidential contenders (Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Beto O’Rourke, etc.). Not only have they proposed the expanding of background checks and so-called ‘red flag laws’(something returning lawmakers on both sides of the aisle promise to immediately take up), they also want a mandatory buy-back program for assault-style semi-automatic rifles. In addition, some want mandatory gun registration for ALL guns ( ‘Beto O’Rourke said, ‘We must go the necessary steps further, as politically difficult as they may be — a gun registry in this country, licensing for every firearm, and every single one of those AR-15 and AK-47s will be bought back so they’re not on our streets.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “They want to use taxpayer money for this?! Not on my watch!”

Biblical Response:  “Mine either…but we may not be thinking alike. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a voluntary buyback program (though I can’t imagine going up against a well-armed tyrannical government with shotguns and knives), just not one that is mandatory. The real issue for me, however, is a matter of image. When Jesus was asked whether it was lawful to pay taxes or not, the religious leaders were trying to trick Him – if he said ‘yes,’ He was endorsing all the horrible atrocities of Rome; if he said ‘no,’ he was being rebellious to those in authority, He said, ‘Bring me a coin.’ Looking at it, He asked, ‘Whose image does it bear?’ They replied, ‘Caesar.’ He replied, ‘Then render to Caesar what is his, and to God what is His’(Matt. 12:15-17). Since we were made in the image of God, we should render our very lives to Him.”

“Christians? We are not pacifists (Luke 22:35-38), we are pragmatists (Matt. 10:16). Still, paying taxation for unrighteous purposes should give us pause.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to discern between difficult stands…we seek Your wisdom; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
