CLARITY – 8-26-19 Color Blind

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -8-26-19

Color Blind

What’s Happening: “There were audible gasps in the audience as City Council (Marysville, Michigan) candidate Jean Cramer made a comment that opposed bi-racial marriage (https://www.yahoo.com/news/doubling-down-racist-comments-council-211915006.html). As incredible as that seems, it is not an isolated incident this political season. Mary Ann Lisanti,  apologized Tuesday after reports that she referred to a legislative district in predominantly African-American Prince Georges County as a ‘n—– district’ Both candidates were  Dems (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2019/02/28/maryland-officials-demand-del-mary-ann-lisanti-resign-over-racial-slur/3013957002/).  In the instance of the Marysville council meeting, one member said he wanted to check his calendar and make sure it was 2019, He said he thought we settled civil rights issues 50 years ago.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Whoever thought inter-marrying was a good idea?”

Biblical Response:  “Using that very word shows prejudice…it shows there are categories of people. This is directly opposed to Scripture (Acts 17:26):

…and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation…’(NASU)

In the 80s, I got what I thought was a strange request from a friend of mine. She was  currently a student at Rhema Bible Training Institute in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma where we lived. She asked if she and her fiance’ could have their wedding at our house. As we were business associates (her and her fiance’), I saw no problem, but I did ask why she didn’t just get married at Rhema. Without any approbation, she stated that as a bi-racial couple they were not allowed (he was from Haiti and dark black; she was a very fair-skinned blonde from Minnesota)). I never checked the accuracy of her statement, but conducted the wedding and everything went off smoothly. There is no place for racial prejudice in the kingdom of God. We serve a color blind God. In fact, inter-marrying may one day remove all racial distinctions. Won’t there be some raised eyebrows (indeed, when I mentioned this at an all-black chuich I was preaching to in Las Vegas, they raised some eyebrows, too)? Sadly, yes…but less and less as the generations march on.”

“Christians? The color of all men’s blood is red…including Jesus. His sacrifice on the cross for ALL Mankind makes any race valuable (What is something worth? What someone is willing to pay for it. Since the same price was paid for all, ALL must be equally valued by God).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, keep us from expressing our prejudices, and may we grow to be as color blind as You; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-29-19 When Was Experience a Negative?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -6-29-19

When Was Experience a Negative?

What’s Happening: “There’s racism, nationalism, sexism…and now ageism – prejudice against someone because they’re too old – apparently this was the charge by Eric Swalwell in the Democrat debates this week. He made a not-so-vague reference when he recommended that the torch be passed to younger politicians – it was covertly aimed at Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden, who will be in their seventies when 2020 rolls around – California Representative Swalwell is just 38 (https://www.yahoo.com/news/bernie-sanders-claims-apos-ageism-144244719.html). ‘I think that’s kind of ageism, to tell you the truth, Judge people on the totality of who they are: what their ideas are, what their experience is, what their record is,” said Sanders.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Won’t those guys be in their eighties during their Presidency…I mean, if they get elected?”

Biblical Response:  “Yes .but when has experience ever been a negative?! Our Founding Fathers wisely put a minimum age requirement – 35 – in the Constitution, but no upper limit (and that is when the average life expectancy was much less). I don’t think age should be a consideration at all – being too young or too old. Read what the Scripture has to say about it;

‘…but it is not mere age that makes men wise. Rather, it is the spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty that makes him intelligent.’ (Job 32:8-9)”

“Christians? Rabbis had to be thirty to serve (Numb. 4:2-3); that’s the only age requirement I see in Scripture. Not to defend Bernie Sanders (his socialist agenda is unbiblical), but experience should never be a disqualifier.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, our leaders need Your Spirit directing them…help us only to promote those who promote You…and have Your Spirit in control; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-24-19 Justice…Except For Me

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -6-24-19

Justice…Except For Me

What’s Happening: “The Defense did its job and asked for mercy in the August 12, 2017 hate crime (to which the defendant pled guilty) of killing one and wounding dozens of others when James Alex Fields, Jr. plowed into a crowd of anti-white supremacists with his car in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Prosecution pointed out the defendant has shown no remorse and keeps a picture of Hitler by his bedside. The Defense pointed out his young age (22), his traumatic childhood, and mental illness in asking for mercy. His plea of guilty may have saved him getting the death penalty, but a life-sentence may be in the offing (https://www.yahoo.com/news/white-supremacist-killed-woman-driving-074757102.html). ‘No amount of punishment imposed on James can repair the damage he caused to dozens of innocent people. But this Court should find that retribution has limits,’ the Defense said. Friday.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess evil does exist…”

Biblical Response:  “Don’t tell me you’re just figuring that out! Of course, it does. Thankfully, so does good. Strange how everybody wants justice (including Mr. Fields…he just wants to be the final arbiter of it), except when it comes to themselves…then they want mercy. I’ve said it before and it bears repeating: JUSTICE MAKES HELL NECESSARY, MERCY MAKES HEAVEN POSSIBLE.

“I don’t know how long Mr. Fields will live. Hopefully, long enough to become remorseful and to repent. If not, he might find it’s a little too late and a little too hot to show any regret later…I said might, because only God can judge his heart (Jer. 11;20; I Sam. 16:7). Maybe a life sentence is merciful.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe evil exists, and we believe in judgment. We also believe this life is just a blink compared with eternity (Titus 3:7). In view of the facts, where we spend eternity should be of paramount importance.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, grant those that have been assigned the task of judging, Your wisdom: justice tempered with mercy; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-29-18 Timing is Everything

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-29-18

Timing is Everything

What’s Happening: “Everyone has, sadly, heard about the mass shooting that occurred at Squirrel Hill Synagogue in Pittsburgh, the lives of 11 worshipers who died, and the injured four police officers who were also shot…even of 50-year-old suspect Robert Bowers, but have you heard about Rabbi Husbands-Hankin who was late to the service and narrowly escaped the shooting? (https://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2018/10/28/squirrel-hill-sixth-presbyterian-church-synagogue-shooting-interfaith-service/).  He was late because he was still at another service, but wanted to see his friend at Squirrel Hill. Asked by a reporter if his friend, who was injured, was going to be okay, he said. “God-willing.”,

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Just at the right place at the right time.”

Biblical Response:  “You think?! Kind of makes you want to swallow that curse at traffic…maybe there’s a reason for your delay. We go about our days randomly frustrated at first this obstacle to our progress and that… who knows? As Amy Grant (song actually written by Richard Smallwood) once sang: “Through danger seen and unseen

There’s protection all around

Under the refuge of God’s wings

Security is found

For there are angels watchin’ you to keep you in all of your ways

Keeping you from stumbling so don’t be afraid

God’s appointed angels watching over me, angels watchin’ over me.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in timing. As the Scriptures say, Jesus came ‘at just the right time’ (2 Cor. 6:2 NLT). Sometimes we just have to be patient to allow circumstances and events to take place…but we have this confidence:

‘We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.’ (Rom. 8:28 NASU).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to patiently wait for you to move…it sure beats the stress of frustration that comes from You ‘failing’ to meet our agenda; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-13-18 Private = Public

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-13-18

Private = Public

What’s Happening:  “FBI Agent Peter Strzok testified in a public hearing on Capitol Hill yesterday, but there were questions whether he came voluntarily or was subpoenaed (this would drastically change the rules of questioning). All of the partisan fighting was about whether his admitted bias affected his actions…did his privately held beliefs affect his public service? (https://www.westernjournal.com/gowdy-asks-strzok-first-question-then-all-hell-breaks-loose/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-WJ&utm_campaign=dailyam&utm_content=western-journal). ‘At no time in any of these texts did those personal beliefs ever enter into the realm of any action I took,’ Strzok said and CNN reported (https://www.cnn.com/2018/07/12/politics/peter-strzok-hearing-congress/index.html). ”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Private should be private and public should be public.”

Biblical Response:  “And in a perfect world there would be no need for there to be a difference…both would be the same and both would be righteous. However, we are not in that perfect world…at least, not yet. Unfortunately, we operate today like there should be a separation…that we should keep our private lives separate from our public lives. Someday I’m going to write that book, “The Myth of the Closet.” People think they can lead one life in the closet and another outside it. NEWS FLASH: God was in there the whole time! It didn’t work for Clinton (his oval office shenanigans with Monica, the blue dress, and all) and it won’t work for Strzok.

“Christians? We deceive ourselves when we maintain this private/public opaqueness. Transparency is a Christian reality and unrepented sin fosters the myth of the closet (Luke 12:3). We are hypocritically setting a standard of righteousness when we maintain we have no need of redemption in our thought-life. How do you achieve this holiness? It’s a cinch maintaining this false separation between private and public is no place to start. More of God’s Word will help (Phil. 2:5; Rom. 12:2)…and the Holy Spirit’s conviction (John 16:7-8).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to choose men and women of impeccable integrity for our halls of justice, those with no difference between private and public; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 2-6-18 They Said…They Said

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-6-18

They Said…They Said

What’s Happening:  “Again, it depends on to whom you talk…the Democrats (with their response memo) or the Republicans (with their Nunes memo saying the Trump Dossier was the reason for the FISA Court approval of wiretaps). Nobody but the House Intelligence Committee has read the Democrats’ memo…and they voted unanimously to release it. Trump can stll block it (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/02/05/intelligence-committee-approves-release-dems-rebuttal-to-fisa-memo.html). ‘We think this will help inform the public of the many distortions and inaccuracies in the majority memo,’  Schliff, the memo’s author, said.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Who are we to believe?”

Biblical Response:  “Both…and neither. Everyone’s got an agenda. The Republicans are convinced the FBI and DOJ of the Obama Administration were biased. The Democrats say they weren’t. (probably they were – and so are those Trump has picked to lead his FBI and DOJ). If you think the leadership of anyone appointed by one administration or another  is unbiased, you don’t understand the foundation of political appointees (I know that the FBI and the DOJ are supposed to be apolitical, but do you really think it ends up that way? – sure, the lower you go the more independent your leadership is – but at the top…not so much). No thinking person expects lack of bias. Elections have consequences.”

“Christians? In a perfect world everyone does what is absolutely right. But until then, we’ll have to learn how to discern through all the distortions – Republican AND Democrat – that are told by fallen men (John 8:32).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to read between the lies and understand the varying perspectives of what our leaders will swear is the truth; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
