CLARITY – 10-21-19 The Plans of Mice and Men

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-21-19

The Plans of Mice and Men

It’s Happening: “The next conflict will look a little different- at least if the U.S. Army and Marines have anything to say about it…that statement was made loud and clear by the sinking on July 12, 2018 of the USS Racine, a 522-foot long tank landing ship, in the waters north of Hawaii. Of course, it was a planned sinking – by land forces from Japan, Australia, and helicopters and drones and a Los Angeles-class submarine from the U.S., to prove that the upgrading of forces is sufficient to counter recent military moves by China (like the creation of island bases in the South China Sea) (https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/us-army-and-marines-have-plan-take-china-and-russias-navies-88996).  I didn’t list half of the forces that were involved – all this to avoid the famously quoted ‘Never get involved in a land war in Asia.’ (Miracle Max in the Princess Bride – 1987).”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I knew they had to have a plan,,”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, but is it the right one? It is the Pentagon…so it must be, right? Being on the right side (God’s side), helps, too. How do I know it is God’s side? Well, it certainly was in WWII (the Nazi’s killing of 6 million Jews in concentration camps kind of assured us of ultimate victory…you don’t want to go against God). Of course, we made a few mistakes there, too… mistakes we’ll be paying for for a long time (but that’s another topic).

We have exterminated well over 60 million innocent babies via abortion (which doesn’t bode well for us in the favor department), but atheistic Russia and China…hopefully…trumps that. In any case, whatever ‘plans’ we make, the Lord may have other plans. Besides it is not good to ‘trust in chariots and horses’ (Ps. 20:7). Sometimes “the best-laid plans of mice and men gang aft agley’ (Bobbie Burns’ poem – 1785 – meaning His plan might overrule).

“Christians? As the scripture from Proverbs says: “Man proposes, but God disposes.” (Prov. 19:21 LB). Maybe it’s time to pray.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to see and understand the long-term plans You have in light of the short-term plans we’ve made; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-18-19

There’s a Whole Lot of Shakin’ Goin’ On

It’s Happening: “In an article published yesterday in Science, the lead author of the study, Zachary Ross of the California Institute of Technology, said the 160-mile long Garlock Fault could produce a much bigger earthquake, an 8.0 or bigger temblor and might cause quakes across the state. The free alarm app recently made available couldn’t be more timely…download it now (https://www.yahoo.com/news/big-one-coming-california-fault-021152032.html).  ‘We really have to remind ourselves that California is earthquake country, So, it’s not just thinking about the largest, most damaging potential scenarios like events on the San Andreas, but remembering that there’s a potential for hazard pretty much all over the place,’ said Ross.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Who in their right mind would live in California?”

Biblical Response:  “Who indeed? I moved from that state years ago…though from crazy legislation, not from fear of earthquakes. The worst part of it all, is the unpredictability of quakes. Of course, there are many that think the political quakes are warning temblors of geological ones…that retribution is coming. I don’t know about that, but there is a scripture that speaks ‘that which can be shaken will be shaken, that that which cannot be shaken will remain’ (Heb. 12:27). What cannot be shaken? God.”

“Christians? We, too, need to build upon something that cannot be shaken. Our foundation might be tested, too (Matt. 7:24-27). Testing is nothing to be feared…if you are prepared.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be able to sleep at night, confident of a Sure Foundation (Is 28:16); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-16-19 No Longer Measured in “Blood and Treasure?”

CLARITY

No Longer Measured in “BIood and Treasure?”

It’s Happening: “AI may have changed the calculus…and it remains to be seen whether or not that’s a good thing. In militant geek circles, the competition between General Dynamics’ new remote-controlled tank prototype and Raytheon’s offering is muddled by changing production schedules. However, in the Pentagon, war planners may have to deal with a larger issue: will ‘blood and treasure’ change to just ‘treasure’ and will that change their motivation? The war of the future may be fought from the comforts of home…and that may change the way we look at it. The link only deals with the technological and political aspects, but thinkers should also consider motivations (https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/us-army%E2%80%99s-optionally-manned-fighting-vehicle-must-be-revolutionary-88186). If ‘The price of liberty is eternal vigilance’ (Wendell Phillips – 1811-1888), does that change our motivations when the vigilance costs less?

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Should I care, if it’s fought ‘over there?’”

Biblical Response:  “(Hey, that rhymes!:) There’s still ‘blood and treasure’…just not ours. And we should care (Rom. 12:15). Those that die in less developed countries were some mother’s child, too. It will be great when ‘swords are beaten into ploughshares’ (Is. 2:4), but until then, war rages on…and if we bear less blood, our care may be less, too. Will we become less concerned with our more mercenary ability? God forbid!”

“Christians? While we are generally against war, we recognize on earth it still may be necessary…it doesn’t mean we have to like it…and we should care (and do), but we care for the unfettered nature of our freedom to spread the Gospel, too.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, may we not lose sight of the price…on both sides of conflict…and do everything we can to negotiate peace without compromising our principles; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY 10-15-19 It Works Both Ways

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-15-19

It Works Both Ways

What’s Happening: “Hunter Biden made some ‘poor judgments,’ he said in an interview with ABC’s Amy Robach…no news there. Did he really think his last name played no part in his being on the board of a company in Ukraine or China? His recent leaving the Chinese equity firm is probably no coincidence, either. Whether he did anything unethical or illegal, he did  surround himself with those kind of people…this he freely admits (https://www.yahoo.com/news/exclusive-hiding-plain-sight-hunter-biden-defends-foreign-095021838–abc-news-topstories.html). ‘I gave a hook to some very unethical people to act in illegal ways to try to do some harm to my father. That’s where I made the mistake. So I take full responsibility for that. Did I do anything improper? No, not in any way. Not in any way whatsoever.’ Riiiggghhhttt…and I have a bridge in Brooklyn I want to interest you in…”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “As P. T. Barnum said: ‘There’s a sucker born every minute…” No way do I believe him!”

Biblical Response:  “I don’t know whether Joe or Hunter did anything they weren’t supposed to, but it looks bad. Don’t they know it works both ways, Sure, I’m sad that they got caught with their hand in the cookie jar (it sure looks bad for American politicians and their families – not that Ukrainian officials are innocent (how’s the old saying go? ‘Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.’- Lord Acton – 1887). Also the Scripture is quite poignant on this fact:

“‘Bad company corrupts good morals.’ (1 Cor. 15:33 NASU)

“Christians? They should be familiar with that scripture…and another one, too:

‘Abstain from all appearance of evil.’ (1 Thess. 5:22 KJV)

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, teach us to look both ways…forward into the future, and backwards into the past…and realize our actions affect more than us; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-14-19 Why History Repeats Itself

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-14-19

Why History Repeats Itself

What’s Happening: “When Trump announced his U.S. troops withdrawal from Syria, he was fulfilling a campaign promise: to bring our troops home. The U.S. has been involved in many wars in the Middle East and Asia – many of them quite protracted (Viet Nam, the Gulf Wars, Afghanistan, ISIS, etc.). When we’ve left, the forces we went to quell have always reconstituted themselves, often becoming more menacing than before. Of course, we’ve had to abandon our local allies in the process of withdrawal…and they are not too happy about it (current case in point: the YPG Kurds). Why does history keep repeating itself? (https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/sad-history-all-times-west-abandon-kurds-87911). Quoting from an article by Sebastien Roblin, ‘But civil war in Syria and the rise of ISIS meant that the long and tragic U.S.-Kurdish relationship had another chapter in store for it…’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Because we have a flawed nation-building foreign policy…that’s why history repeats itself.”

Biblical Response:  “That might be true in the short-term. But in the long-term – I’m talking multi-millennia – it’s not, because our foreign policy is flawed…it’s because Man is flawed (Is. 53:6: Rom. 3:23). Until you solve the problem of the human heart, all we can do is respond  knee-jerkily (is that a word?). We may desire for ‘peace on earth’ but the problem – Man – still lives here. Each wanna-be nation…or tribe…or ideology…wants dominance (including us). The best we can hope for is a mutual non-aggression pact, Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) or detente. As I’ve been often quoted: ‘There will never be peace on earth, until the Prince of Peace rules in the heart of every man.’”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in a heart change (John 3:3). The problem arises when we think it’s optional (it’s not, it’s imperative…read the passage)….or when we think it’s possible by any route you truly believe is correct. I guess folks haven’t read John 14:6 or Acts 4:12.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, thank You for being patient with us…help us to weigh carefully what we do in the short-term…and give us leaders who will always have the long-term in view; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-12-19 Trusting Authority Presumes Trustworthiness

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-12-19

Trusting Authority

Presumes Trustworthiness

What’s Happening: “It may be hard for the women of San Mateo County, California to trust cops in the future, but those same cops ask that they not be judged on the actions of one…and he was convicted of sexual assault and may be sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars. A jury found former police officer Noah White Winchester, 35 guilty Wednesday and the breathing of relief was surely palpable, if not audible. He has been held on over $3 million dollars bond (https://www.yahoo.com/news/former-california-police-officer-convicted-010757325.html). ‘The defendant is someone we all entrusted with a uniform, gun and badge and asked to serve our community,’ Deputy District Attorney Alpana Samant said. ‘But what he did was hunt and prey on the most vulnerable women in our society.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What he did was a disgusting abuse of power!”

Biblical Response:  “I agree…and the criminal justice system in America did its job. I’m just sorry that it took so long (the article is a little confusing, but whether the attacks occurred in 2013 or 2015, that’s still a long time for justice). Thankfully, God’s justice is not so…though it may sometimes seem slow (2 Pet. 3:9), His justice is sure…and eternal. One other attribute of God’s nature is His trustworthiness, though we may sometimes wonder (we usually don’t have enough information…we can’t see the end from the beginning like Him – Is. 46:10).”

“Christians? We believe in the trustworthiness of God (our impatience, He patiently tolerates). In fact, we believe that all authority (even earthly authority) is based in Him (Rom. 13:1). It should be easier to trust authority that is trustworthy.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to consider Who stands behind the authority of our earthly authorities, and give them the respect they are due; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-11-19 He Plead Not Guilty?!

CLARITY

He Plead Not Guilty?!

What’s Happening: “Let me see if I’ve got this right…Patrick Crusius, 21, shot up a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, killing 22, and wounding 25…and all caught on Walmart video cams; he was arrested at the scene…with an AK-47 in his hand: he posted a white-supremacist rant online before the incident: he said after the attack, he wanted to kill as many Mexicans as he could; and he plead NOT GUILTY in court Thursday?!! Although federal authorities have categorized this as domestic terrorism and said he may also be guilty of a number of hate crimes, he is to be presumed innocent until proven guilty…what a great country! (https://www.yahoo.com/news/el-paso-walmart-mass-shooting-212906063.html). Dads are telling their daughters, ‘Por favor, cuidase, mija’ pleading with them to be careful at work, keep quiet, have an exit plan, reported another article from USA Today.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “His pleading is ridiculous! He’s as guilty as sin!”

Biblical Response:  “Looks that way to me…but he’ll get his day in court. I truly can’t see what tack his defense might take (except insanity). The point is, however, we live in a country where the accused have a presumption of innocence. Guilt, however easily proven…must be proven! I cannot imagine a better system…yet there is! In the courtroom of heaven when we all will be judged. The bad news: we are presumed guilty (Is. 53:6; Rom. 3:23). The Good News: Jesus already paid our price (Rom. 3:25; 1 John 2:2). In a drama for the ages, Jesus Himself, as our defense attorney, will stand before the Judge and show the nail-prints in His hands and feet and the wound in His side and declare our debt paid-in-full!”

“Christians? We believe that the First Adam is responsible for our guilt, but the Last Adam (Jesus) has already paid the price (1 Cor. 15:43-49).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be grateful for both systems: the one on earth that makes known what is only conjectured…and the one in heaven that makes what You know moot…by the blood of Jesus: in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-10-19 The Only True Safety

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-10-19

The Only True Safety

What’s Happening: “Did the expensive Patriot Missile systems, six of which the Saudis bought from the U.S., fail in the recent attacks on Saudi oil fields? This is the question many are asking…but it has not yet been determined with 100% certainty if the attacks were missiles from Iran or smaller long-distance drones bearing smaller munitions from the Yemeni Houthis  (https://nationalinterest.org/blog/buzz/did-american-built-patriot-missiles-fail-protect-saudi-arabia-86691). ‘Saudi Arabia has been in talks to acquire the same S-400 advanced air-defense system that Turkey recently bought from Russia,’ said Marc Champion for Bloomberg.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Why should I care? I mean, the Sept. 14 attack only raised the gas price for about a week.”

Biblical Response:  “If the attacks only temporarily inconvenienced your wallet, you may be of that unthinking uncaring crowd that is behind our nation’s moral slide. There is much at stake here: 1) The people whose lives depend on the safety these devices provide (of course, the only true safety is from the Lord –  Prov. 21:31); 2) The reputation of the manufacturer of the Patriot (Raytheon); 3) The bottom line of U.S. defense contractors vs. Russian manufacturers; etc.”

“Christians? Depending on the contemporary ‘arm of strength,’ whether it’s a sword and shield, a chariot and horse, or a defensive missile…is folly just begging to fail. Safety from God alone is reliable…of course that requires faith. That might be the whole point, anyway.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to prepare for the inevitable day of battle, but realize Your skirts are our only true refuge; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-9-19 Rule All You Want

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-9-19

Rule All You Want

What’s Happening: “The Supreme Court heard three cases of alleged gender discrimination Tuesday, although the decision may come at a much later date. The cases involved two gay men and a transgender woman. 21 states already have laws giving the LGBT community protected status. At stake are transgender bathroom facilities, the make up of contestants in competitive sports, and other Title VII aspects of the 1964 Civil Rights Act (https://www.yahoo.com/news/supreme-court-hears-first-case-135801716.html). In a ruling from the Sixth Circuit, the court found that Title VII included transgender anti-discrimination, stating, ‘It is analytically impossible to fire an employee based on that employee’s status as a transgender person without being motivated, at least in part, by the employee’s sex.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Maybe the Supreme Court should stay out of cases that go below the waist.”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe they should. Of course, they can rule all they want, but it won’t change heaven’s immutable ruling (Lev. 18:22; 20:13; 1 Cor. 6:9; etc.)…and the last time I checked, the Creator has the final say over His creation…agree with Him or not. The real issue is whether you believe in a ‘living Constitution’ (subject to a changing culture) or have a strict constructionists’ or originalists’ view (one who says the mores of our Founders are to be preserved). I’d have to go with the latter as 53 of the 55 who signed the Declaration of Independence were of the Christian faith – the other two were deists (https://wallbuilders.com/founding-fathers-jesus-christianity-bible/).

In an eternal sense, it doesn’t matter what the Supreme Court (or any man-made court, for that matter) rules. But, in a temporal sense (where we live…in the here and now), it does. What these nine people say have real consequences.”

“Christians? The issue for us is best reflected in the Living Bible’s rendering of Prov. 29:27: ‘The good hate the badness of the wicked. The wicked hate the goodness of the good.’ We don’t hate the homosexual or the transgender…just their detrimental behavior. If more Christians would demonstrate their love and compassion for the person…and not their activities, maybe we’d have a less antagonistic audience.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, grant our judges Your wisdom and help them to get on the same page as You; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-8-19

Rep. Omar to Divorce…Again

What’s Happening: “How many marriages is acceptable…for a leader? If they are to be examples for our society….maybe Congresswoman Ilhan has had too many. She signed a document that would have her filing for divorce when she was in Burkina Faso Friday. She is to be divorced from Ahmed Hirsi, the father of her three children. Before Hirsi, there was Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, then Hirsi again, now allegedly she is having an affair with Timothy Mynette, a worker with her campaign…and also married (https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2019/10/07/ilhan-omar-files-divorce-claiming-an-irretrievable-breakdown-her-marriage/). ‘Just like any other family navigating this kind of transition, Ilhan wishes to have their privacy respected for themselves and their children and will not be commenting any further,’ said her attorney, Jaime Driggs, in a statement.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Isn’t that matter her private life and out-of-bounds?”

Biblical Response:  “Yes, it is her ‘private life’ and ‘No’ it is not out-of-bounds. I don’t think with an omniscient God (Ps. 139; Pro. 5:21; 15:3; 24:11; Jer. 23:24; 32:19) there is such a thing as a ‘private life,’ especially for leaders ((Is. 9:16). Is that fair? Maybe not by contemporary standards…but maybe that is part of what is wrong in the ‘swamp’…too many people living by ‘contemporary standards’ and not by the Word of God. Sure, there are reasons for divorce that are biblical, even for God (Matt. 19:9). That doesn’t change the fact that God hates divorce (Mal. 2:16). It’s just one more thing He forgives. But it’s not recommended…at least not for those who hold themselves out as examples (leaders).”

“Christians? We’re against divorce. But we realize the giving of your word (which is what marriage is) should not be done lightly…or lightly dissolved…and sometimes necessary; At the Marriage Supper of the Lamb (when the ‘consummation of the ages’ occurs), He marries us in our glorified (and forgiven) state…and forever!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to be too quick to judge…or forgive where You have not; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
