A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-14-20

Finally…

What’s Happening: “The death of a child molester in Indonesia, Frenchman Francois Camille Abello, 65, arrested at a hotel last month in Jakarta, together with two underage girls, seemed somehow just. Although he died from an apparent suicide, there are at least three hundred underage (10-17) girls who are probably breathing a sigh of relief. Quoting from the BBC article: ‘He was facing life in prison, chemical castration, or possibly the death penalty, if convicted’ (https://www.yahoo.com/news/french-man-accused-molesting-hundreds-112257964.html). Quoting again: ‘Umar Shahab, an official at the National Police Hospital in Jakarta, said on Monday that Mr. Abello had sustained a neck fracture that blocked his oxygen supply.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Facing those options…knowing he was guilty…I don’t blame him checking out!”

Biblical Response:  “True…still, he didn’t escape anything. The judgment of God is in addition to the judgment of Man.While Francois may have thought he was ducking out, but he wasn’t (Num. 32:23; Heb. 9:27). God is like the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police)…He always gets His man. I guess I need to add to the age-old saying …There are two (no, three) inescapable realities: death and taxes…AND judgment.”

“He may have thought he was escaping judgment, but he was deluded. Of course, none of us are innocent (Is. 53:6; Ps. 53:3; Rom. 3:10, 23, 6:23).  Just looking on a woman with lust is as bad (Matt. 5:28), and every man is guilty of that at one time or another. Thankfully, the One Who was innocent took our place…and we took His (Rom. 5:19).”

“Christians? We believe in the principle of substitution (Rom. 3:25; 1 John 4:10). It’s kind of like that old Three Stooges’ story:

The Three Stooges had two more days on their prison sentence and decided to dig a tunnel to escape. The Warden was waiting for them when they surfaced five feet INSIDE the fence. He chose to flog them as punishment; still, he was not entirely unmerciful. He said he was going to give them three lashes, but they could have anything on their backs they wanted. Ever the tough guy, Moe said he would have oil on his back. Larry, ever the comic, said he wanted peanut butter on his back. Curly, ever the chicken, took one look at Moe and Larry, and said, ‘I’ll have Moe on my back.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to remember that justice may be delayed, but time is a multiplier and justice is inevitable; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-13-20

Tit for Tat

What’s Happening: “When U.S. Senators Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Representative Chris Smith, and Ambassador for Religious Freedom Sam Brownback expressed criticism of the Communist Chinese government’s recent detention of over 1 million people of Muslim minorities in Xinjiang, the Chinese government slapped sanctions on them. Of course, the Chinese said it was in retaliation for U.S, sanctions. Although travel restriction and prohibition of property exchanges were imposed by both sides, there were no plans by either side affected. The Chinese Communists claim they have closed the camps and released the ‘re-education’ detainees. That seems to be a reality for some, but not for all. Relocation to forced labor factories was the lot of some (https://www.yahoo.com/news/china-bans-cruz-rubio-smith-091855592.html). Quoting from the Associated Press article that appeared earlier today: ‘Critics have likened the camps to prisons to which inmates are sentenced with little due process and where they are compelled to denounce their religion, language and culture and pledge allegiance to the Communist Party and its leader, Xi Jinping. An Associated Press investigation has also discovered allegations that women in Xinjiang’s predominantly native Uighur ethnic group were forced to use birth control or undergo involuntary sterilizations.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I am glad I’m not a Uighur or a Muslim and CERTAINLY glad I don’t live in China!”

Biblical Response:  “While I am glad also (on those three counts and others), I still hope you identify with their plight and that leads to praying for them and other actions…rather than just being grateful you are not similarly suffering (James 2:15-17). There is a reason that people the world over are trying to get in America and are willing to risk their lives to do so.”

“As far as sanctions go, the four that were sanctioned by China should consider the sanctions aa a badge of honor that they are being persecuted for their statements. In fact, if it were me, I would wonder what further ire I could incur.”

“Christians? We are not unfamiliar with persecution (2 Cor. 4:9). From the First Century to the present, this has been our joyful lot. The heart attitude of one of Jesus’ apostles (Andrew) as recorded by John Foxe (Pg.9, Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, 1563): ‘O cross, most welcomed and long looked for!  With a willing mind, joyfully and desirously, I come to thee, being the scholar of Him which did hang on thee; because I have always been thy lover, and have coveted to embrace thee,’ How do you defeat an attitude like that?! You don’t. Which is one of the reasons Christianity has survived and thrived these last two millennia,”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to never forget the plight of those who suffer persecution, whether or not they are our brethren; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-11-20

Sometimes Mercy is Justice

What’s Happening: “Late yesterday, President Trump commuted the 3-year sentence of Roger Stone for the conviction of his being found guilty of obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and lying to Congress. The Mueller Probe, initially trying to find collusion in the what has been termed the ‘Russia Hoax’ to remove Trump from office, had to settle for ancillary charges found against his associates. By not pardoning Stone, the conviction still stands; Stone, 67, just won’t be spending any more jail time…he won’t have to report to prison next Tuesday to begin his sentence. Trump communicated through his Press Secretary that Roger Stone was a victim (https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-commutes-roger-stones-sentence-before-threeyear-prison-term-was-to-begin-235451680.html)  ‘Roger Stone is a victim of the Russia Hoax that the Left and its allies in the media perpetuated for years in an attempt to undermine the Trump Presidency,’ McEnany said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess if you’re going to be a crook, it helps to have the President for a friend.”

Biblical Response:  “No doubt…though by not pardoning him, the President admits there might have been some wrong-doing. There seems to be ample evidence that the investigation was 99% political – the FISA Court abuse, the illegal wire-tapping, and all. Roger Stone would never have been charged without a politically motivated Mueller Probe. I’m not saying Stone didn’t operate in the gray most of the time, just that he was probably caught because of Trump’s presidency. The left expected Hillary to win in 2016 and has yet to get over her loss.”

Granting clemency to a convicted felon will probably be seen as a partisan act – that’s why it was done late, on a Friday – still, it was probably the right thing to do as mercy is seldom wrong (James 3:17 – ‘But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.’ (NASU)

I’m definitely not saying that the President always displays ‘wisdom from above,’ but it’s hard to fault him on this one.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in mercy, alright. We’ve personally been the recipient of it through Christ’s sacrifice (Acts 7:60). We believe God is well able to balance the scales, anyway. As I’ve said before: ‘Justice makes hell necessary; mercy makes heaven possible.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to remember that in pointing a finger, three are pointing right back at us; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-10-20 Losing Breeds Losing

CLARITY

Losing Breeds Losing

What’s Happening: “An incident where an un-masked customer, unidentified in the article, but wearing a red  t-shirt that said, ‘Running the World Since 1776,’ lost it at a Florida Costco – while being recorded – and it cost him his job as an insurance salesman, according to the insurance company, Tedd Todd Insurance. The 17-second video, shot by another customer or employee wearing a mask, shows the rant in full. A 911 call was made, but the person making the angry statement was nowhere to be found when the polce arrived. All customers and employees are required to wear masks while in the store (https://www.yahoo.com/news/feel-threatened-unmasked-florida-mans-165515391.html) Quoting from the NBC News article by Janette Griffith: ‘Florida man at Fort Myers Costco in ‘Running the World Since 1776’ shirt flips out on elderly woman who asked him to wear a mask and man who defended her #BecauseFlorida,’ Corben [filmmaker] tweeted.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Wear a mask while in Costco – got it.”

Biblical Response:  Hopefully, this unfortunate event taught you more than that…like not losing it – and your job -…showing a little self-control (Gal. 5:22). We live in an America that is post-Christian. Things that would be considered common courtesy just a few decades ago are quite uncommon today. Sure, I’m against much of the brouhaha that the media and the left has made over COVID-19 (and my blogs show it – just go to subdue.com and do a search for COVID-19), but there is such a thing as manners. And being in a high-profile job…I probably would have terminated the guy, too. Politics aside, there is a price to pay for civil disobedience. I hope the guy realized that and thought it was worth it to make his statement.”

“Christians? We believe in common courtesy (Rom. 12:1-21). The story should never be about us…which may fly in the face of all this independence stuff. It’s hard for such a dependent creature to demonstrate independence…but not impossible. One has to make a distinction between whether to obey man or God (Acts 4:19).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not be in circumstances that require such a choice…and if in them to choose rightly; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-9-20

The Reward of Foolishness

What’s Happening: “In a USA Today article that appeared yesterday, a report listing 66 car ramming incidents since May 27 made it clear it was unhealthy or unwise to walk in a street designated for cars. 19 of the incidents were clearly malicious with crowds of protesters being purposefully hit by drivers. Some felt threatened by protesters that surrounded their car, others intentionally drove into a crowd in obvious acts of terrorism…it was obvious that being in the middle of the street seemed an invitation to angry motorists (ISIS popularized this technique years ago, actually publishing how-to videos online). At least one driver has been charged with felony hit and run and some were not charged because it appears the driver felt threatened and only minor injuries resulted (https://www.yahoo.com/news/very-careful-middle-street-least-042442817.html). ‘I would be very careful in the middle of the street,’ said J. J. MacNab, a Fellow at George Washington University’s Program on Extremism. ‘There’s a significant amount of people who think that any protester hit in the street has it coming, and that’s a dangerous mindset.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What is this world coming to when a protester can be rammed with impunity?!”

Biblical Response:  “I’m with you…sorta. I mean, I  will fight for protesters’ rights to peacefully express their views, but not to surround a car and make threats or hurl racial slurs. I’m not saying motorists then have a right to just plow into a crowd…but then again, God did give humans a little common sense. Prov. 10:21 pretty much sums it up –

“The words of the godly encourage many, but fools are destroyed by their lack of common sense. (NLT)”

A car is bigger, more powerful, and designed for street use…humans aren’t.”

“Christians? We believe in common sense, and we believe that stupidity has consequences (Gal. 6:7). When stupidity is ignorant, it is unfortunate. When it is intentional, it is foolishness.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to use our heads for making wise decisions, not foolish ones; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-8-20 Whose Responsibility Is It?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-8-20

Whose Responsibility Is It?

What’s Happening: “It was a full-court press event designed to give a singular message: reopen the public schools this fall, as President Trump, First Lady Melania, Vice President Pence and Second Lady Karen, Education Secretary Devoss and others urged all states to resume face-to-face instruction.. Asked by the press if they had the authority to require openings, they admitted these decisions were local. The American Federation of Teachers union is against it. There are dire warnings against it by some medical professionals citing reopenings accompanied by a resurgence in May in Israel. However, the CDC came out strongly for the reopening (https://www.yahoo.com/news/white-house-pushes-schools-to-open-their-doors-on-schedule-005251395.html). Quoting the Yahoo News article: ‘To open up America again, we need to open up our schools again,’ said Vice President Mike Pence, speaking from the State Floor of the White House, where he and others convened for an event billed as the ‘National Dialogue on Safely Reopening America’s Schools.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What will working parents do with kids if they don’t reopen?”

Biblical Response:  “Good question…I guess muddle along like they have been…at least for the elite who have computer screens at home and internet access for distance virtual education…the impoverished, not so much…their kids will fall further behind. Parents may resort to homeschooling with one parent working two or three jobs and the other realizing they are unqualified to manage the kids’ education. It’s not a pretty picture. The economy continues to suffer, etc. Normalcy is a pipe dream.”

“Whose responsibility is the education of children? Ultimately, parents and God (Prov. 22:6, Heb. 12:9-10):

    Prov 22:6

‘Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.’ (NASU)

Heb 12:9-10

‘Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.’ (NASU)

“Of course, that’s fine for a nation with a Christian consensus…which we no longer are…but not so acceptable in this secular society. What are we to do? Return to a time when the average American saw the responsibility of educating their offspring as a personal mandate, not an optional and often inconvenient distraction. What am I describing? A Christian consensus.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe the education of our children is the parents’ responsibility (see the scriptures referenced above). Even if we have to settle for a lower standard of living. After all, they are the future…not the hope of the future…THE FUTURE…like it or not.””

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to make sense of what should be a simple issue, not a complex one; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Memorial Stones

What’s Happening: “About 100-200 predominantly black protesters, some of them heavily armed, marched through Georgia’s Stone Mountain Park calling for a huge carved edifice (carved to commemorate Confederate struggles – the largest such carving in the U.S.) to be removed…it is carved into a granite mountain. In an Associated Press Reporter article that appeared yesterday, the protesters were reportedly peaceful. The site normally for a Fourth of July laser show and fireworks display, COVID-19 has every thing dampened (https://sports.yahoo.com/armed-protesters-call-removal-giant-072201487.html). Quoting from the article: ‘Although the park has historically been a gathering spot for white supremacists, the city of Stone Mountain nowadays has a majority-black population.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “How is anyone supposed to move a mountain?”

Biblical Response:  “Right…unless it is going to be ‘cast into the sea’ (Matt.13:47 – just kidding…couldn’t help myself). Seriously, some stones were meant to  help us remember (Josh. 4:8-9)…and not all memories are of pleasant things…some things we want to remember so we’ll never make that mistake again! I understand (though, I can only imagine) the need to express their anguish (or anger) at their treatment, but it’s time to put the past in the past…sure, we are to remember it sorrowfully…but expressions of anger – especially if they are armed – will only end in bloodshed and heartache…hasn’t there been enough of that already?”

“Christians? We believe in memorializing (not in wallowing in) the past. Sometimes it’s good…and we’re proud. Sometimes it’s bad…and we’re ashamed (I’m thinking about King David’s exploits and errors). But both help us make decisions about the future and which course to take. Without these poignant reminders, we’re apt to make errors chronic.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to learn what we need to about our past and reflect…and correct our errors to the degree they can be wisely ameliorated; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-4-20 Shame on Hans Christian Andersen?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-4-20

Shame on Hans Christian Andersen?

What’s Happening: “Danes awakened Friday to graffiti and accusations of racism – ‘racist fish’ was spray-painted at the base of the ‘Little Mermaid’ bronze statue visited by over 100 million annually. Famed children’s novelist, Hans Christian Andersen, was honored by the 107-year-old bronze of the character made famous in the Disney movie  The Little Mermaid, but it  was ‘decorated’ protest style. This was not the first time the statue has been desecrated, suffering decapitation twice during previous encounters. But this was reminiscent of the recent Black Lives Matter message and may be tied to protests that began in the U.S. after the heinous killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last month. Further investigation is required to find what racism protesters were talking about (https://www.yahoo.com/news/copenhagens-little-mermaid-labelled-racist-102435040.html). Quoting from the Reuters article that appeared yesterday: ‘I am having a hard time seeing what is particularly racist in the fairy tale ‘The Little Mermaid,’ Ane Grum-Schwensen, researcher at the H.C. Andersen Center at University of Southern Denmark, told local news wire Ritzau.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So now even our fairy tales may be racist…”

Biblical Response:  “Perhaps…a reference may be vague, but pervasive and culture-shaping…or it could be just another attempt at dividing an already divisive society. Remember, ‘a house divided against itself cannot stand’ (Mark 3:25). That is one of the tools in the liberals’ toolbox, and it’s all about the next election. If they can paint the present administration as racist, maybe they won’t lose their black constituency.“

“Christians?  While we are absolutely against racism, we are not for division (Acts 17:26):

‘…and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation,’ (NASU)

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be sensitive to those that have suffered greatly at the hands of our mistakes, but wary of some people’s selfish political motives; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-3-20 A Matter of Programming

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-3-20

A Matter of Programming

What’s Happening: “500 people have been arrested in Omaha since the night of May 29, when white bar-owner Jake Gardner (38) shot and killed black protester James Scurlock (22). Gardner, who claimed self-defense, was not among them. He shot him with a pistol he carried (under an expired concealed carry permit) and though the police have been accused of systemic racism, there seems to be ample eye-witness accounts of being raised racist and examples of racism, and Gardner has been detained and questioned, he still has yet to be charged with anything. A family member recalls Gardner’s father using racial slurs when raising him (https://www.yahoo.com/news/after-a-black-protester-is-killed-in-omaha-witnesses-claim-a-rushed-investigation-ignored-signs-of-the-shooters-allegedly-190303877.html).  Quoting the Yahoo News article posted July 1: ‘After hearing nothing from authorities for more than a week, Heineman (Gardner’s cousin) decided to testify at a public hearing in Omaha, where community members had been invited to address state lawmakers about issues related to police misconduct and racial injustice.”

“‘My family has a laundry list of assault charges and a long history of racism,’ Heineman said at the hearing, describing how ‘sleepless and disturbed’ she felt ‘knowing that all the times my family members used the N-word, which was a lot, all of the times that my family made racist jokes, all of the times that my family ingrained violence into the minds and hearts and souls of their own babies, all of those things were leading up to the death of James.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So don’t move to Omaha, right?”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah…maybe not anywhere in America (though it’s still the only place that has an overtly Christian founding – 53 of the 55 signers of the Declaration of Independence were Christian). There used to be a Christian consensus in America. As evidence, this quote from deist Benjamin Franklin (from his autobiography):

‘It was wonderful to see the change soon made in the manners of our inhabitants. From being thoughtless or indifferent about religion, it seemed all the world were growing religious, so that one could not walk thro’ the town (Boston) in an evening without psalms sung in different families of every street.’

Ben also famously arose at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, after a particularly heated exchange and uttered these words:

‘Mr. President: (He was addressing George Washington, unanimously chosen president of the Constitutional Convention.) The small progress we have made after four or five weeks’ close attendance & continual reasonings with each other…how has it happened, Sir, that we have not hitherto once thought of humbly applying to the Father of lights to illuminate our understanding!…I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth – that God rules in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writing, that ‘except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.’ I therefore beg leave to move–that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven…be held every morning before we proceed to business…’”

Add to that, that Ben Franklin was arguably the least ‘Christian’ of the Founders, you can understand my historical American Christian concensusus claim.”

“But not any more. We don’t have to go to Omaha…or the 2,000 cities that have held protests since the George Floyd killing…to realize something has changed over the years. Perhaps it was the removal of the Bible and prayer from public schools (Engle v. Vitale – 1962). I guess when you sow the wind, you reap the whirlwind (Hosea 8:7).”

“Christians? We believe in a Christian consensus…not just in America, but the world (Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16). Obviously, in the nearly 2,000 years since those words were uttered  (in the two previous scriptures), we’ve not done our job (so, we are partly to blame for this ‘systemic’, ‘ingrained’ un-Christian thinking). There is no good excuse, so let’s just roll up our sleeves and GET TO WORK!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to repair the breech and restore America to its roots; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-2-20 Largest Cache Ever Seized

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-2-20

Largest Cache Ever Seized

What’s Happening: “In the southern Port of Salerno, Italy, the largest seizure ever (84 million pills with a value of $1 Billion) of amphetamines (Captagon). Italian authorities captured this haul from Syria on three container ships that were smuggling this likely for a destination in the Camorra crime group. The drug produces a euphoric effect for the tired and depressed and has historically been one of the primary funders of Islamic State terrorism. Although the production of this  cache seized Wednesday was negatively affected by COVID-19, all that meant was that manufacturing had to be shifted to areas of Syria. The 14 tons of drugs were found packed in machinery and large paper cylinders destined (allegedly) for industrial use. This is similar to a raid in the same port two weeks ago (https://www.yahoo.com/news/italian-police-seize-record-amount-103244895.html). Quoting from the Reuters article that was posted yesterday: ‘Italian authorities believe the coronavirus lockdown across Europe has hindered the production and distribution of synthetic drugs, forcing traffickers to organize shipments from Syria, where these activities have not slowed down.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Since scarcity and demand govern prices, that should make the cost of doing drugs in the Middle East go up…makes me glad I live in America!”

Biblical Response:  “Spoken like a true international illegal drug profiteer…or an American druggie! Although many drugs have a temporary desired effect (even Captagon was prescribed in the ‘60s to deal with fear and tiredness…kind of like medical marijuana is prescribed in many states to deal with chronic pain), their danger lies in their addictive nature (which also makes them potentially very profitable – once addicted, you’ll pay hugely to get more).“

“Christians?  We don’t believe in being addicted to anything (this include alcohol, drugs, sex, money – or the things it will buy – anything except the love of God…we just can’t seem to get enough of that!). We believe it’s hard to say ‘yes’ to God and ‘no’ to addictive substances. It’s like that scripture in 1 Cor. 6:12:

‘All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.’ (NASU)

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to choose those things that master us…carefully…like ‘love, joy, peace…’ (Gal. 5:22-23)…YOU; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
