CLARITY – 6-7-18 Targeting to be Expected

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-7-18

Targeting to be Expected

What’s Happening:  “The First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS) was seen for the first time (at FEMA in D.C.) since May 10…since having a procedure done on a ‘benign kidney condition.’ Rumors, fueled by an antagonistic media, have talked about a facelift, abuse, and a near-death experience (https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-declares-melania-really-well-152544183.html). Trump Tweeted, ‘During her recovery from surgery they reported everything from near death, to facelift, to left the W.H. (and me) for N.Y. or Virginia, to abuse. All Fake, she is doing really well!’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Knowing how Trump has treated women, it’s believable.”

Biblical Response:  “He may still be suffering for the reputation of yesteryear (which he may have rightfully earned), but I want to give a guy a chance to change. Besides, where would any of us be if everything we’ve ever done were still held against us? I’m prepared to forgive and move on. The media? Not so much.”

“Christians? Try being the First Lady of the Universe (FLOTU? – the Church). Ever noticed how Hollywood usually portrays the clergy or the Church in a questionable position? However, it’s to be expected and even rejoiced over (Matt. 5:11-12). In fact, one of the requirements for admission to the Council of Nicea (365 AD) was showing the scars of persecution on your body – proof of Christ’s ownership. Targeting is to be expected.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to accept the ‘slings and arrows’ sent our way and to not be surprised ‘as if something strange were happening’ (1 Pet. 4:12); in Jesus’ Name we pray, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY

The Price of “Success” Too High

What’s Happening:  “The famous handbag designer, Kate Spade, is dead…apparently having hanged herself leaving a suicide note. Her 13-year-old daughter, away at the time, is not to blame, explains the note (though her husband was home at the time of her death). Her fans pointed out that success does not guarantee happiness (https://www.yahoo.com/news/kate-spades-suicide-proof-money-fame-cant-deter-depression-194710219.html). ‘I am so deeply saddened by the news of Kate Spade’s death. Mental illness is cruel and doesn’t discriminate based on resources or perceived popularity. Be good to yourselves today, friends,’ Laura Turner, one of her fans Tweeted.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Truly a sad, but, thankfully, a rare tale.”

Biblical Response:  “Sad, yes…rare, no. Unless you consider 30 suicides per day a miniscule number….and that’s among women! A Tweet by another of her fans comes to mind: ‘Kate Spade committed suicide, this again proves money doesn’t buy happiness. Happiness comes from within, people and material objects are temporary.’ (EVA) ‘Within’ can be too general, even self-deceptive. Some will say ‘Who cares? As long as you truly believe you’re happy, you won’t take your life.’ Yeah, but if you discover too late that happiness is sourced in something you have not pursued…”

“Christians? We, of all people have no excuse for depression…not if you take all of life in context. My pastor was preaching from Ecclesiastes and remarked about the futility that Solomon learned of. Perhaps I wasn’t listening because I can’t quote anything he said. Still, what the Lord said might be more eye-opening anyway: 120/infinity = (life in context). (Gen. 6:3) The length of this life is just a blink when compared with eternity.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to take the ups and downs of life in context; in Jesus’ Name we pray, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 6-5-18 No Cake, Still Sweet

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-5-18

No Cake, Still Sweet

What’s Happening:  “The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruled yesterday (7-2) that Jack Phillips was entirely within his rights when he refused five years ago (5 yrs!) to create a cake for the marriage of a same-sex couple, despite a lower court’s ruling to the contrary (https://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=WA18F04&f=WU18F02). ‘Everyone is welcome in my shop, be it homeless folks (many of whom I’ve befriended over coffee, cookies and conversation), the two men who are suing me, or anyone else who finds their way in,’ said Mr. Phillips. ‘The God that I serve, whose arms are open to all, expects that of me, and it is my joy to obey Him. But creating a cake that celebrates a view of marriage in conflict with my faith is not something that I can do.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “For crying out loud, it’s just a cake!”

Biblical Response:  “If Jack Phillips doesn’t want to bake a cake for a homosexual couple who wants to get married, saying it’s against his religion, he shouldn’t be forced to do so… and apparently, SCOTUS agrees. Whether that protection can be extended to other providers (say limousine services, hall renters, or musicians, etc.) is for other cases. But it is the issue of our day, believe me.”

“Christians? To say the Scripture does not support homosexuality (let alone gay marriage) is an understatement (see: Lev 18:22, 20:13; Rom. 1:24-27, etc.). That is the difference between ‘love’ and ‘like.’While I am to love all people, I don’t have to like everything they do. Let me quote the Living Bible’s rendering of Proverbs 29:27. It states our obligations best, ‘The good hate the badness of the wicked. The wicked hate the goodness of the good.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to ‘throw the baby out with the bathwater,’ so to speak…to love the homosexual, but hate his homosexuality; in a sense, it’s no greater sin than anything that separates us from God; in Jesus’ Name we pray, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 6-4-18 Good News or Bad

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-4-18

Good News or Bad

What’s Happening:  “It’s anybody’s guess ,really, the replacement of the DPRK’s top military brass…is it good news or bad? Analysts say that this gives Kim Jong-un more control of the  Korean People’s Army (KPA), preparing for the summit with Trump by surrounding himself with more like-minded leaders. If Kim really intends denuclearization, this might be good news. If he intends to keep North Korea on its historic path of deception and promises made, but not kept, it’s bad. The South thinks it’s good, but someone with “no dog in the hunt” needs to be heard (https://www.yahoo.com/news/north-korea-shakes-military-leadership-ahead-trump-summit-033547734.html). ‘If Kim Jong Un is set on making peace with the U.S. and South Korea and dealing away at least part of the nuclear program, he will have to put the KPA’s influence in a box and keep it there,’ said the director of the International Affairs Group, Ken Gause.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Surely, it doesn’t matter much….this summit.”

Biblical Response:  “Not unless you mind the first truly nuclear war! What’s at stake is more serious than anyone can possibly imagine…it’s certainly nothing to yawn at. While I do understand the obvious advantage of approaching peace from a position of strength (thank you, Mr. Trump), I want someone in our delegation in Singapore that has nothing to prove (thank you, Mike Pompeo).”

“Christians? Oh we believe in Good News (this gives us hope)…and know the repercussions of bad news (Read Rom. 7 sometime). What we need June 12 is good news… ‘Good news from far away is like cold water to the thirsty.’ (Prov. 25:25) Yep. That just about sums it up.”

”Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help those involved in making peace have NO hidden agendas; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 6-2-18 GIGO

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-2-18

GIGO

What’s Happening:  “A recent survey found younger voters (those 30 and under) most concerned about the economy and social inequality. Only 6% listed gun control as a major concern, compared to 21% after the Parkland, FL shooting. NextGen America, a progressive climate action committee said students surveyed listed college affordability, health care, racial injustice and climate change as their areas of primary concern…why Democrats do well among youth (https://www.yahoo.com/news/young-people-plan-vote-year-key-issues-may-surprise-090006929.html). Olivia Bercow, a spokesperson for the organization said, ‘I think that, for the most part, young people are really, really engaged on the issues and right now, we’re seeing what having a certain type of leadership in office looks like on issues that matter.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Young voters usually don’t show up at the polls, so I’m not worried.”

Biblical Response:  “A survey done in 2018 said only 37% of youth intend to vote. Who knows what fraction of that will actually show up…so I’m inclined to relax with you – except the youth ARE the future. Conservatives may rejoice over low participation rates of the youth, but that is not good news. The public education system in America doesn’t teach conservative family values….like voting…but that’s not a fact we want to tout.”

“Christians? You can’t ask a pagan to vote his conscience…especially when the world has programmed him (1 John 2;15). Their is an old saying in computer circles: Garbage In, Garbage Out (GIGO). Or as the prophet Hosea said, “You sow the wind, and reap the whirlwind…” (Hos. 8:7).”

”Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to consider the youth as the sacred trust that they are and teach them the values that made America great (Eph. 6:4); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 6-1-18 Pardoned

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-1-18

Pardoned

What’s Happening:  “Yesterday was a good day for Dinesh D’Souza, receiving the President’s unsolicited pardon. D’Souza is a conservative commentator and movie-maker who pled guilty to illegal campaign donations to Republican candidate Wendy Long in 2012 (https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-announces-pardon-provocateur-dinesh-dsouza-142201969.html). Trump talked about pardoning Rod Blagojevich and Martha Stewart, also. Dinesh’s reaction? ‘Obama and his stooges tried to destroy my American dream and faith in America. Trump has fully restored both. I’m very grateful,’ D’Souza said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “You mean it’s like it never happened?”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah…sort of. I mean, you know it, but as far as the crime is concerned, it’s as if it never happened. Sometimes the sentence has already been served (as in Dinesh’s case) or you might be in the middle of serving it, and you might get your sentence commuted (time served – as in Blagojevich’s case). In any case, it’s a way of saying ‘enough’s enough’ or ‘let’s reconsider.’ The pardon may be controversial, but it is Constitutional. (Article II, Section 2, Clause 1).”

“Christians? We are all familiar with pardoning (Jer. 31:34; Heb. 8:12). But Christ has done us one better. He showed us His love by taking the sentence of death we deserved (Heb. 7:27).”

”Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, thank You for pardoning us, but thank You even more for sending Your Son; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 5-31-18 Still Offered

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-31-18

Still Offered

What’s Happening:  “Kim Yong Chol, the chairman of the ruling Worker’s Party in North Korea, met with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in New York yesterday, and as such, became the highest ranking DPRK official ever to go to the U.S. They are seeing if the proposed summit between Kim Jong-un and Trump, originally planned for June 12 in Singapore, could still be held (https://www.yahoo.com/news/mike-pompeo-ramps-pressure-north-094842120.html). ‘Between now and if we’re going to have a summit, they’re going to have to make clear what they’re willing to do,’ a State Department official said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Is the only alternative nuclear war?”

Biblical Response:  “No, there is also conventional war…and then there is also the same “strategic patience” of the past that is only a delaying tactic for them to increase their nuclear arsenal to the point where they are a real threat – not just to us, but the region and then world. Hopefully, the DPRK will join the rest of the world and realize the nuclear-war option is unthinkable. Maybe the summit will still go on…at least we should so pray.”

“Christians? Thankfully, the peace with God (which is even more desirable than peace here on earth) is still being offered. ..and until we die remains “on the table” (Acts 2:39).”

”Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to recognize that peace with You has an expiration date, too; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

Correction:   Yesterday’s CLARITY (Final Justice) reported an assassination of a Russian journalist in Kiev, Ukraine. It now turns out all this was staged as a sting operation by the local police to catch the intended assassin before he could carry out his contracted killing. No one knew of the operation outside of a few. Even Babchenko’s wife did not know at the time. I repeat, Arkady Babchenko is ALIVE! Final Justice

What’s Happening:  “Arkady Babchenko, a Russian journalist who had fled Russia for relative safety in Kiev, Ukraine, was shot in the back and killed Tuesday just outside his upscale apartment. Local authorities believe his criticalness of the Moscow government’s policies finally caught up with him, but launched a full-scale investigation into the incident (https://www.yahoo.com/news/russian-journalist-shot-killed-ukrainian-capital-192728589.html). ‘Ukraine is becoming the most dangerous country for reporters,” said Russian lawmaker Yevgeny Revenko. You think?”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess Babchenko didn’t go far enough from Russia…”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe not, though I wonder if you can ever be far enough from the long arm of Russian “justice.” Don’t get me wrong, I think dissent should be protected speech, but not everywhere has freedom of the press. Thankfully, Babchenko’s death is only the end of his earth-life. He may have been a Christian. If so, eternal bliss is beginning. ”

“Christians? There are many injustices this world continues to mete out, but final justice awaits us all. Some will be grateful…others will not (Heb. 9:27).”

”Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help the Babchenko family with their loss and help us all look for the final justice that will be rendered one day; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-29-18

Inoculated

What’s Happening:  “The development of an experimental vaccine given to some health workers in the Congo may reinvigorate the fight against the ebola outbreak there that has already claimed 28 lives. The virus, depending on the strain, may have as much as a 90% mortality rate (https://www.yahoo.com/news/ebola-vaccinations-begin-congos-northwest-town-bikoro-154045625.html). ‘We who are on the front lines of caring for the sick. We are reassured,’ said Dr. Serge Ngaleboto, Director of Bikoro Hospital.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “As long as travel to the U.S. is restricted, I don’t have worry, right?”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not. Although the vaccine that’s being administered is only experimental, the only way to get ebola is by direct contact with body fluids…unless you plan a trip to Africa in the near future, you probably don’t have to worry about it…I said probably. There are always mosquitoes, rats and genetic mutation. ”

“Christians? Of course, we believe in science, but there is an insidious disease that is even more deadly, and has eternal consequences. Of course, I’m talking about sin…with which we are all infected…and the only known cure is bloodborne: the blood of Jesus (1 John 1:7). As the song goes: “What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus!”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 5-28-18

The Best Line

What’s Happening:  “It may be Memorial Day today, but President trump delivered a patriotic speech to the graduation of the U.S. Naval Academy Friday and what some think was the best line of his presidency to date (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/trump-delivers-what-may-be-the-best-line-of-his-presidency-at-naval-graduation/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-CT&utm_campaign=dailypm&utm_content=conservative-tribune). ‘You chase discovery and you never flinch in the eye of a raging storm. America is in your heart, The ocean is in your soul. The salt water runs through your veins. You live your life according to the final law of the Navy. The word impossible does not exist, because Navy never quits,’ Trump quipped.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “After ‘little rocket man’, ‘fire and fury’ to Kim Jong-un, and, about the Iran deal: ‘that’s the worst deal ever’ …that may be saying something!”

Biblical Response:  “He is a master of branding and social media, but that was a formal speech.,.. still, do you praise the speech writer or the speech giver? In any case, those lofty words are an understatement of reality. We in America will enjoy our peaceful bar-b-cues and trips-to-the-lake in the freedom and abundance our brave men and women have purchased for us…by their sacrifice. We all say: THANKS!”

“Christians? We also are grateful. And, speaking of sacrifice AND great lines, how about these?  ‘For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes on Him shall not perish, but shall have everlasting life.’ (John 3:16) and ‘Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.’ (1 John 4:10).”

”Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we are grateful for the sacrifices of those who gave themselves for us, we do not lose sight that You have given us the best example in Your Son; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
