CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -6-11-19

Unreliable

What’s Happening: “Extradition to China from New Zealand is in question…A) It’s never been done before (China has no formal extradition rights for New Zealand); B) There is some evidence that though China rigorously challenges any accusation of torture it nevertheless occurs; C) The attempt to extradite someone from Honk Kong has resulted in a million-man protest there… Kyung Yup Kim is accused of killing a woman in Shanghai a decade ago. And the courts in New Zealand put a temporary halt to his extradition to China earlier today (https://www.yahoo.com/news/zealand-court-stops-man-being-082024042.html). ‘Nevertheless, torture remains widespread and confessions obtained through torture are regularly admitted in evidence,’ said the court’s report.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Maybe Kim really did kill that woman!”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe…but we’ll really never know…and neither will the Chinese…not if they rely on a confession obtained through torture. People being tortured will tell you anything just to get the pain to stop. It might be the truth, but it might not. Extradition has traditionally been used as a way for the long arm of justice to get even longer…if there’s no place to run, maybe criminals will just give up and face the music. The Apostle Paul, of course, used it to get justice. His appeal to Caesar led to his extradition to Rome (Acts 25:21), and a fair trial…at least fairer than the Jewish leaders would have given him.”

“Christians? Do we believe in extradition? Absolutely! That is what the translation of the saints at the end of the age is all about (1Thess. 4:13-18). Don we believe in torture? In what way can we construe torture to mean that it is a demonstration of loving our enemies (Matt. 5:44)?”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we want to be set free by truth (John 8:32), we don’t want to assume what we get from torture is truth; help us to discern; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-10-19 The Most Important Thing

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -6-10-19

The Most Important Thing

What’s Happening: “In a display of global solidarity, gay pride parades were celebrated over the weekend in Detroit, D.C., Warsaw, etc. Although the Warsaw parade was attended by Mayor Rafal Trzakowski and was mostly peaceful, the others were marred by Neo-Nazis and other protesters, some stampeding when they thought there was gunfire heard (https://www.yahoo.com/news/lgbt-pride-marches-us-interrupted-090526604.html). ‘Literally f****** Nazis are at Motor City Pride right now, please be safe out there y’all,

Even if they deserve it, do not engage. Our safety at our Pride is the most important thing,’ tweeted one attendant. Not much covered by the main-stream media (MSM) was a straight pride parade in Boston, naming Alt-Right (and gay) provacateur Milo Yiannopolous as Marshall (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/06/straight-pride-parade-milo-yiannopoulos-marshal.html). Brad Pitt’s name and image were used to advertise the event. He said he was not ‘super happy’ about it, either.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Wow! Straight Pride parade. It’s about time!”

Biblical Response:  “Led by a gay guy? I don’t know. He wants to celebrate tolerance when God is not so tolerant of his choice of a lifestyle (1 Cor. 6:9; 1 Tim. 1:10). Sure, society wants to be inclusive, to not judge, but the most quoted scripture: ‘judge not’ (Matt. 7:1) is taken completely out of context (read verse 2). We are not called to tolerance. In fact, we will be judging angels (1 Cor. 6:3). Don’t get me wrong, I am for tolerance….redefined…I call it patience. The scripture even says He is being (seemingly) slow about His promised return because He’s giving more time for sinners to repent (2 Pet. 3:9). As for safety being ‘the most important thing’…not from God’s perspective.”

“Christians? We believe the Lordship of Christ is the most important thing (Rom. 10:9-10). And although Jesus died for all, not all receive Him (John 1:12). It’s kind of like your Grandma giving you a Christmas present, which ,during clean-up, you accidentally  kicked under the couch. If you ask Grandma if she gave you a gift, she will say she did. You, however, never opened (or received the intended benefit of) her ‘free gift’ (Rom. 6:23).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to keep the most important thing the most important thing…and help us to be patient…hating the sin, while loving the sinner (Prov. 29:27 LB); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-8-19 Unanimous Ruling

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -6-8-19

Unanimous Ruling

What’s Happening: “In an interview yesterday of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, she predicted many future close rulings favoring the conservatives on the court. She did, however, laud Kavanaugh’s female law clerk appointments, saying he is responsible for female law clerks exceeding, for the first time, male law clerks appointed by Supremes (https://www.yahoo.com/news/justice-ginsburg-warns-more-5-202523877.html). ‘Thanks to his selections, the court has this term for the first time ever, more women than men serving as law clerks,’Ginsburg said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Now I can see why the Dems fought against Kavanaugh so hard.”

Biblical Response:  “So can I. Still, to bring up so many ‘he-said/she-said’ baseless allegations was beyond the pale. No one should be surprised at future rulings…even the overturn of no-precedent ruling Roe V. Wade. We are going to live in a very different country 15 years from now…THANK GOD! Heck, the Bible and prayer might be brought back into public schools! (Joshua 1:8…and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, which put them there in the first place).

“Christians? Oh we believe in the instructive value of God’s Word (2 Tim. 3:16):

‘ All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:…’(KJV)”

The judgments may be close on the Supreme Court, but THE judgement will be unanimous!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while some may celebrate and look forward to a temporality that favors conservatism, all will celebrate Your fairness for eternity…well, maybe not all; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-7-19 Stepping Up

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -6-7-19

Stepping Up

What’s Happening: “Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard is hopeful that further negotiations or what his government has done so far by sending 6000 National Guard troops to his country’s southern border to stop Guatemalan immigrants on their way to the U.S border will be enough to avoid the promised increase in tariffs that are due to begin Monday (5%, then another 5% each month until 25% is reached). Democrats want to remove President Trump’s ability to unilaterally impose tariffs through declaring National Emergencies (https://www.yahoo.com/news/mexico-scrambles-slow-migrants-trump-tariffs-loom-221454340.html). ‘The U.S. position is focused on migrant control measures, ours is on development,’ Ebrard said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Securing their own southern border…isn’t that just what they’re supposed to do?”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, but everything costs money. Besides, immigrants are a source of income (‘transit fees’, “human trafficking fees’ – also called graft – ‘coyote fees’ etc….oh, and a major source of future Democrat votes). Stepping up to their responsibilities as a real government reminds me of a scripture encouraging Christians to step up to their responsibilities:

“Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” (1 Cor. 16:13 NASU)”

“Christians? Though we’re often as guilty as the next guy, we know better…and we feel bad about it…hopefully, enough to repent and change. However, the temptation to follow our own interests or take the path of least resistance is strong. God help us.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help our leaders (and us) to do the right thing; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-6-19 The Legacy of Greatness

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -6-6-19

The Legacy of Greatness

What’s Happening: “President of the United States, Donald Trump, was celebratory but somber, as he attended France’s commemoration of the D-Day Invasion 75 years later in Colleville-Sur-Mer, Normandy, France . He was accompanied by French President Emmanuel Macron and others earlier today and attended a similar ceremony in England yesterday. He referred to the invasion of 130,000 that changed the course of the war as ‘among the very greatest Americans who will ever live.’ (https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-mark-75th-anniversary-d-043431205.html) Macron thanked Americans who sacrificed so much for his country to be free, ‘France doesn’t forget. We know what we owe to you veterans our freedom. On behalf of my nation, I just want to say, thank you.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Big deal! I mean, I’m grateful, but why all the brouhaha, anyway?”

Biblical Response:  “Aside from the fact you might be speaking German today, those who don’t remember past sacrifices are liable to repeat the hostility that necessitated them. Perhaps we don’t talk about the ‘war to end all wars’ (WWI)…which didn’t, or WWII enough, but the blood of millions (from both wars) cries from the ground, pleading with this generation not to forget. There are things to forget (Phil. 3:13), but this is not one of them. Taking the Bible and prayer out of schools (of course, there are those who argue that as long as there are tests there will be prayer), and forcing students to read revisionist history (sorry, I’m a little mad…I just spent a day at the Yorktown, Virginia Revolutionary War Museum and there wasn’t a single mention of the cultural revolution that the Great Awakening – 1725-1775 – brought to the colonies) doesn’t help this generation, either.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in rehearsing previous messages the past communicates. Read the reaction (Nehemiah 8) of those who returned to Israel after the Babylonian captivity.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, let us never forget the past and its influence on the present; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-5-19 Free, But Costly

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -6-5-19

Free, But Costly

What’s Happening: “If you are a stockholder in Amazon, Google, Apple or Facebook, the recent rumors of antitrust investigations by the FTC and the DOJ have freaked you out! The reason? Their stocks have subsequently plummeted. Of course, their will be a short-term cost to the consumers of their products as these tech giants try to make up for stock losses by increasing their prices – and long-term gains if these investigations yield a forced breakup (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-technology-antitrust/u-s-moving-toward-major-antitrust-probe-of-tech-giants-idUSKCN1T42JH). Lawmakers on both sides have weighed in: ‘It’s got so much power, and so unregulated,’ said Lindsey Graham (R), Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman. Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal said on Twitter, ‘Their predatory power grabs demand strict and stiff investigation and antitrust action.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “And this should concern me, why?”

Biblical Response:  “Because it will, no doubt, affect everyone’s bottom line…significantly but imperceptibly. To be a truly informed consumer today requires Business 101, or at least a rudimentary knowledge of how the capitalistic system runs. One of the first maxims you learn is that everything costs…or as the ‘old school’ puts it: there ain’t no such thing as a free lunch (Robert Heinlein’s novel of 1966). Or biblically, you could realize that the best thing in life is free: salvation (Rom. 6:23).”

“Christians? Oh, we believe that salvation is free…to those who receive it. It was very costly to Jesus…He had to die extremely painfully for crimes He didn’t commit. So, I guess you could say it was free to us…but not free to Him…it cost Him everything.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we need to be aware of what things cost, help us also to be aware (and grateful) for what didn’t cost us anything; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-4-19 It’s Never Wrong

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -6-4-19

It’s Never Wrong

What’s Happening: “What happened Sunday astounded many – in the media and in his church –  but Pastor David Platt of McLean Bible Church in Vienna, VA prayed for the President (impromptu and in person) because of the 13 killed in a Virginia Beach municipal building last week (including the gunman). Although the Bible calls for prayer for ‘all those in authority’, the Pastor felt it necessary to explain himself. He surely didn’t want the prayer to be an endorsement (https://www.yahoo.com/news/pastor-apologizes-congregation-over-trump-223517289.html). ‘Sometimes we find ourselves in situations that we didn’t see coming, and we’re faced with a decision in a moment when we don’t have the liberty of deliberation, so we do our best to glorify God. Today, I found myself in one of those situations.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Just because he prayed doesn’t mean he was in favor politically.”

Biblical Response:  “That’s what I’m saying. The left-leaning media, however, wants to make a mountain out of a molehill. The prayer and a statement to church members  titled “Prayer for the President” was quite innocuous. Even the Bible calls for such a prayer (1 Tim. 2:1-6)…no matter, the press doesn’t like anyone ‘picking sides.’ In fact, it calls believers everywhere to ‘pray about everything’ (Phil. 4:6-7). Besides, if anyone needs prayer, it certainly is the President of the United States.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in praying for our leader and for those who are in tragedy (Rom. 12:15). The only people more in need of prayer are possibly those who are missing their loved ones in Virginia Beach. I’m sure glad that Franklin Graham called for such prayers last Sunday.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father,  help us to be more concerned with obedience than political correctness; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-3-19 Evil Control

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -6-3-19

Evil Control

What’s Happening: “Virginia Beach will never be the same again. Last Thursday, two engaged young people walked the beaches completely unaware that a day later a Virginia Beach municipal building would be the site of a mass shooting that would take the lives of 12 (excluding the gunman – apparently a disgruntled employee that police shot dead) and injure 3 others. Immediately, the Democrat contenders for the 2020 Democrat primaries talked of gun control and background checks…as if any of these measures would solve the real problem  (https://www.yahoo.com/news/cory-booker-virginia-beach-shooting-150441191.html. ‘“We must do all we can to keep our communities safe,’ Kamala Harris tweeted.  Cory Booker agreed: ‘Here,we have a nation that has untold levels of carnage, and violence and shootings every single day, of suicides, 90 to 100 people dying every single day. I believe that just because we’ve failed in the past doesn’t mean we will fail in the future.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Why wouldn’t limiting guns help?”

Biblical Response:  “Because you still haven’t dealt with the evil that gave the gunman the penchant for violence. Episodes of knife violence and vehicles being driven into crowds has proven that the UK’s complete ban of guns hasn’t helped with the underlying problem. Unless you restrain an evil heart, anger and bitterness take control. That’s what conversion does. It restrains the heart (to say nothing of the new heart it gives you – Ezek. 26:36).”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in conversion. That’s what being born again is all about (John 3:3-7). Of course, Christians aren’t perfect, but unless the Holy Spirit controls you (Gal. 5:22) restraining the heart is quite impossible (Gal. 5:19-21).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father,  help us be about the business of getting the Good News out to others (Mark 16:15), for only a relationship with God holds any hope of evil control; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 6-1-19 A Proposition

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -6-1-19

A Proposition

What’s Happening: “And, although it’s the beginning of the marriage month, we’re not talking marriage proposal…in fact, it’s the equivalent of political divorce: impeachment! After the release of the Mueller briefing (I really don’t know what to call it – he did not allow any questions,,,in fact, the Congress was on recess…), there was increased talk of impeachment proceedings.  There is no hint of friendliness between Nancy Pelosi and Bob Mueller…he all but said the ‘I’ word, but she wants to hold off as long as she can…it’s really all about the 2020 election (https://www.yahoo.com/news/mueller-intended-break-democrats-apos-100029578.html). In the linked article one will get the media’s slant toward impeachment and their obvious bias toward the Democrats’ clear desire for ‘divorce,’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Involvement with the Russians deserves impeachment!”

Biblical Response:  “If it could be proved, which the Mueller report and subsequent briefing said it couldn’t. Where does that leave us? With half of the country – including Bob Mueller, Nadler, and all House Democrats – hating Trump. Not a good place, but when has mere hatred been impeachable? It’s a ‘proposition’ now, but may become a ‘proceeding’ Tuesday. We’ll see if emotion rules the day or the ‘cooler’-headed Pelosi. Still, as the scripture says: “Man proposes, but God disposes.” (Prov. 19:21 LB). Whatever you call it (proposition or proceeding), it remains to be seen how successful they’ll be when God is in the equation..

“Christians? Are all Christians in favor of Trump? Probably not. They are, however, in favor of the rule of law (at least they should be – Rom. 13:10). Jerry Nadler reminds us that even Presidents are not above the rule of law…as if we are to assume the President is guilty. There are, so far, no provable, chargeable, indications of collusion or obstruction of justice. Of course, if you’re a never-Trumper, what does that matter?”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father,  help us to get beyond allegation and emotion to the pursuit of the truth; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-31-19 A Heartbeat Away

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -5-31-19

A Heartbeat Away

What’s Happening: “It’s hard to believe, but a Democrat Governor, John Bel Edwards, signed a bipartisan anti-abortion bill into law in Louisiana yesterday, making abortion illegal if a heartbeat can be detected – as early as six weeks in some pregnancies. In so doing, the Democratic Governor was only being consistent, however. Although he supports LGBTQ rights, a minimum wage increase, and many feminist initiatives (common liberal Democrat positions), he is also pro-life…quite an anomaly for a liberal Democrat (https://www.yahoo.com/news/louisiana-democratic-governor-signs-heartbeat-220316274.html). ‘I know there are many who feel just as strongly as I do on abortion and disagree with me — and I respect their opinions,’ Governor Edwards said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I’m glad I don’t live in Louisiana!”

Biblical Response:  “Which, because you’re an American, is your right. If you don’t like something a state legislature does, you can always move. But Louisiana is the fifth state to pass a similar ‘heartbeat’ law…Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, and Georgia have recently passed similar legislation. And the mood in the country is such that the Supreme Court may eventually be called upon to look again at Roe v. Wade.

“Christians? Are all Christians Pro-Life? Hardly. Many are untaught. The real question is can a Christian be Pro-Choice? (notice how I framed the question – I could have called Pro-Choice the more inflammatory ‘Pro-Death’…the Pro-Choice crowd calls the Pro-Life group, Anti-Abortion or Anti-Choice) I will not judge any who claim to be Christian and are Pro-Choice. Only God knows the heart (1 Kings 8:39). God, of course, is all about life (there are over 60 scripture references in the the King James Version that establish this). He is all about getting us to choose life (Deut. 30:19). The unborn who get aborted never get that opportunity.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father,  help people to see that everyone deserves a choice; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
