What’s Happening: “Judge Paul Ridgeway refused to certify that the North Carolinian Republican Representative was elected in the last contested race of 2018. Mark Harris was supposedly elected by a close 905-vote margin (though there is some dispute that third parties may have collected and submitted some Absentee Ballots – there is an investigation into this and the result is what the judge awaits). The opposition contests the results of the election (https://www.yahoo.com/news/judge-rejects-republicans-bid-certified-winner-north-carolina-181426188.html).’”Certification is not appropriate until the investigation into the protest is concluded by final decision,” Judge Ridgeway said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Are we still quibbling over 2018?!”

Biblical Response:  “Yes, and the North Carolina constituency deserves the person they truly selected…so getting it right IS important. Judging whether Mark Harris (or his competitor) was elected is what Judge Ridgeway has been charged to certify, though there are many who would shrink back from that task. In fact, the most quoted verse in the Bible is: “Judge not…” (from Matt. 7:1). Few people quote the rest of the verse, and the first parts’ context: “…that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. (Matt. 7:1-2 KJV). The verse is not saying we are not to judge, but to not judge HYPOCRITICALLY, In fact, we are called to judge (1 Cor. 6:3).”

“Christians? We make judgments everyday (should we buy this product or that… Let’s compare prices and ingredients… we contemplate). Justice may be blind, but every jury is asked to weigh the evidence and make a JUDGEMENT…with their eyes and ears open. Knowing this, should make us pray for our judges.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to judge too hastily or hypocritically…and to pray for those who judge…and not to shrink back from that job, if selected; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Multi-generational

What’s Happening: “Some estimate 126 Afghan Army forces were killed when a Taliban suicide bomber detonated a car bomb yesterday in Maidan Shahr military base in Maidan Wardak Province, Afghanistan. Trump recently announced he wanted to pull troops out of Syria and Afghanistan, but Senator Lindsey Graham thinks it might be premature (https://www.yahoo.com/news/taliban-attack-military-kills-more-135415361.html). ‘To those who believe they should do more and America should do less, that’s coming true. One thing I can tell President Trump and the American people is that we are still needed. It is in our interests to see this through,’ Senator Graham said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Yeah, but what if ‘seeing this through’ is too costly?”

Biblical Response:  “If it’s too costly we shouldn’t have begun in the first place. Taking your question a little more philosophically, I’m sure we started this ‘attack of the Taliban’ because they were involved in 9/11. Our goal should have had a long-term, a longer-term component, and a short-term one. The military option should have been short-term and our goal should have been to make it too costly to the Taliban to ever contemplate attacking us again (or harbor those who do – I’m thinking Osama Bin Laden). Long-term, we should have been seeking regime change…longer-term we should have been seeking ideology change. One is political, the other (the latter) is spiritual. When Gen.MacArthur became temporary president of Japan (at the close of WWII), he called the church in America to immediately send 3,000 missionaries (BTW, we sent 3). He knew what would be required long-term..”

“Christians? Are we prepared for such a task? Probably not, not that our government is wise enough – and it’s now not politically correct – to make such a request. What are we to do? Take it upon ourselves. After all, we’ve already been given the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we need Your courage to do what may cost us plenty…but then it cost You, too: in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY

Unity Amidst Disunity

What’s Happening: “Two states, North Carolina and Michigan, have extended invitations to President Trump to deliver his State of the Union Address, the Wall Street Journal reported today. Normally delivered in January at the U.S. House of Representatives at the invitation of the Speaker, Nancy Pelosi has urged Trump rather to do render it in writing, citing security concerns due to the government shutdown (https://www.westernjournal.com/trump-gets-another-offer-deliver-state-union-away-dc/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-WJ&utm_campaign=dailyam&utm_content=western-journal). Tim Moore, the Republican Speaker of the North Carolina legislature, said: ‘I also believe taking your message outside our nation’s gilded capital to a state government venue reflects the priorities of your administration…’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Can’t we all just agree to disagree?”

Biblical Response:  “That’s way too mature for either Nancy or Donald…seriously, it’s a little more complicated than that… What both sides really want is victory in the 2020 elections. The Dems still can’t believe that Trump is President, and see the shutdown as further proof that he shouldn’t be; the GOP wants to have a chance at further rule and are sure the Dems are just after opening a path to more votes (giving illegal immigrants the vote/citizenship). The last time the nation was so divided was the Civil War.”

“Christians? Oh, we’re for unity alright…but not at the expense of integrity. Truly, ‘every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation’ (Matt. 12:25). At the same time, integrity cannot be sacrificed (Titus 2:7). Irreconcilable differences…an essential ingredient to any famously successful marriage.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we need Your help to navigate these troubled waters; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-19-19 Running with the Wind

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-19-19

Running with the Wind

What’s Happening: “Announcing on January 12 that she would run for President in 2020, Tulsi Gabbard (Democrat Rep. from Hawaii) apologized again for her past statements made against the LGBTQ community. She might have been bending to the prevailing cultural wind…her past statements and actions were particularly condemning (https://www.yahoo.com/news/tulsi-gabbard-apologizes-past-anti-gay-views-195302777.html). Supporting her mom’s views, she was earlier in her life quoted as saying, ‘This war of deception and hatred against my mom is being waged by homosexual activists because they know, that if elected, she will not allow them to force their values down the throats of the children in our schools.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “People have a right to change their views, don’t they?”

Biblical Response:  “Of course they do…even if they are just ‘going along, to get along.’ They also have the right to join in the fate of those they have previously condemned (for that fate, you need to read: 1 Cor. 6:9-10 and 1 Tim. 1:8-11).

You certainly get smooth sailing by running with the wind, but tacking against the wind might take you more in the right direction. Sure, the sailing is more difficult and the opposition will mean it takes you longer to get there, but you might like the destination more.”

“Christians? Standing against the cultural winds has been our lot for centuries (even millenia), but the truth is as unchanging as God (Heb. 13:8)…that’s how you know it’s the truth.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, may our leaders speak the truth in love; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

On the Rise…No Surprise

What’s Happening: “Open Doors, an NGO that keeps track of deaths proven to be strictly for religious reasons, reports a huge increase in the level of persecution of Christians – up 13.9% in just one year – mostly in Nigeria. Although now there’s almost daily fear in India and 1 in 3 Asian Christians experience severe persecution, China actually outlawed Christianity (https://www.yahoo.com/news/one-three-christians-asia-faces-persecution-report-004259377.html). ‘Africa has become the home of violence against Christians,’ claims Michel Varton, president of Open Doors France.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Not being a Christian, how does that affect me?”

Biblical Response:  “Actually, it should trouble everyone. Anytime any group, religious or otherwise, is singled out for punishment just because they believe differently, the freedom of all is in jeopardy. For Christians, this may not be new (John 15:18), but it’s still should be worrisome for everyone.”

“Christians? Although Christianity will prevail (if, as Christians believe, it is inherently superior) as the only real solution to Man’s problems (read the Sermon on the Mount” – Matt. 5,6,7), it will only happen as religion is allowed to have free expression.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give our persecuted brethren the grace to withstand the onslaughts of the enemy; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

When Forward is Backward

What’s Happening: “Acting Attorney General Matthew Whittaker, in a speech delivered at a celebration marking the 25th anniversary yesterday of the passing of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in 1993 under President Bill Clinton (sponsored by then Rep. Chuck Schumer, D-NY, and passed unanimously by the House and 97-3 by the Senate – both under Democrat control), remarked how things have changed since then (https://www.dailysignal.com/2019/01/16/marking-anniversary-of-religious-freedom-law-acting-ag-whitaker-laments-loss-of-support-from-left/?mkt_tok=eyJpIjoiTlRVMk9UVTJNVFF4TVROaSIsInQiOiJjNWNPcUMzUkx0cG1DWHlRYTBOallTTFR4elZMN3Y3NENINGZHSUZuK3JxazkwOUNVaERXM2RVbldDWFMrZU9QRmNtT01Ia1RoUGVOWGNhUnpTN0tPQThGczlESmowXC9WWng4RFdPaGNYbzlpQXBqMlJyWk9Tc0hNSzNpNzFBVnUifQ%3D%3D). ‘Today, many of [the Religious Freedom Restoration Act’s] original supporters, including the ACLU, have changed their mind,’ Whittaker was quoted at The Heritage Foundation event.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “We’ve come a long way, baby.”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah…and not necessarily in a good direction. If we’re not careful, nuns will be forced to fund abortion, and baker’s artistic skills will be coerced into use on gay wedding cakes. Seriously, the resistance of the left may find itself wrapped up in bitterness rather than good policy. If so, they will lose in the long term (Matt. 16:18). Of course, there might be some short term collateral damage. Freedom isn’t free. ”

“Christians? What we have to keep in mind is that our struggle is not against flesh and blood (Eph. 6:12). The Good News? Although we have not been promised escape from wounds, we have been guaranteed victory (Rev. 12:11). Funny how few quote the last part of that verse.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us obtain the courage to struggle against evil…wherever it’s found; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-16-19 Not Quite Secure

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-16-19

Not Quite Secure

What’s Happening: “Although local Nairobi, Kenyan authorities claimed everything was secure in the upscale hotel (close to Westgate Mall where 67 died in a terrorist attack in 2013) following the terrorist attack on Tuesday (which took at least 15 lives – responsibility for the attack was claimed by al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab), there was another explosion and  more gunfire today (https://www.yahoo.com/news/latest-civilians-run-away-attack-nairobi-hotel-140256886.html).  Quoting the latest Associated Press report: ‘Kenya’s Interior Ministry has said authorities are “mopping up” the scene but have not given details on the fate of the attackers. It is not known if any are still at large.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “And I should care, why?”

Biblical Response:  “As John Donne said; “…any man’s death diminishes me…” (from: “No Man is an Island’)…that is why. Besides, as long as terror is allowed to reign, people will make decisions based on fear. It’s true anywhere…including the good ol’e U.S.A. (9/11). ”

“Christians? As much as we tout ‘faith,’we are not exempt from fear and the torment it brings (1 John 4:18). What are we to do? The previous scripture hold the key. We must realize that a God Who loves us will ultimately protect us. Yeah, but you say tragedy still occurs. Yes, it does…and God’s hates it more than we do…this is a fallen world and justice may make hell necessary…but mercy makes heaven possible, too. Thank God, He loves us!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to realize that ultimately love and mercy triumphs over fear and death; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-14-19 Sign of the Times

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-14-19

Sign of the Times

What’s Happening: “Presbyterian Pastor Justin Hoke of Weed, California lost his job as pastor when he posted the following message on the church’s lighted sign: ‘Bruce Jenner is still a man. Homosexuality is still a sin. The culture may change, the Bible does not’ (https://www.dailywire.com/news/42112/pastor-loses-job-after-church-sign-stating-frank-camp?utm_source=cnemail&utm_medium=email&utm_content=011419-news&utm_campaign=position1). Quoting pastor Hoke, Yahoo Lifestyle said: ‘We believe that Jesus commands all Christians to let their light shine. We also believe that salvation is only for sinners. Jesus said he came to call sinners, not the righteous. If we give in to cultural demands to stop calling sin ‘sin,’ then we are robbing people of opportunity to hear the truth.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “‘Live and let live,’ that’s what I say.”

Biblical Response:  “It would be great…only you are not the final arbiter of what should be said. If we fail to call sinners to repentance, are we not guilty of bending to the ‘political correctness’ winds of our culture?  Sure, everybody sins (Is. 56:3; Rom. 3:23) and homosexuality is, in one sense, no worse than overeating. Both are sins. Both separate us from God. However, the collateral damage may be higher in homosexuality.”

“Christians? If the elders decided to let him go…well, that’s their decision…and right or wrong, they have that authority. Whether or not the pastor was right to call out homosexuals on the church’s sign, I’ll leave to the elders and God. As far as our culture is concerned, we should never allow a changing culture to dictate the tenets of an unchanging Gospel.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be set free by the truth (John 8:32), and to set captives free, too; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-12-19 A Force for Good

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-12-19

A Force for Good

What’s Happening: “On a nine-nation tour of the Middle East designed to reassure its allies (and to denounce Iranian hegemony), U. S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, defined America’s regional objectives and countered a growing fear that America’s withdrawal from Syria signaled decreased interest in outcomes there (https://www.yahoo.com/news/pompeo-takes-us-anti-iran-message-gulf-arab-074102498.html). ‘A united GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) is the backbone for regional peace, prosperity, security, and stability, and is essential to countering the single greatest threat to regional stability: the Iranian regime,’ said the State Department.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Did Trump leave too soon?”

Biblical Response:  “Actually, not a single one of the 2,000 troops assigned to Syria have left…just some equipment no longer needed…and there is no schedule posted for a withdrawal, though with the decrease in ISIS it will soon occur. Trump is just wanting the other nations to assume more of the role of self-defense, as they are the ones who stand the most to benefit. Sounds reasonable to me.”

“Christians? Although we are to be concerned for others (Phil. 2:3), there is a place for concern for our families first (1 Tim. 5:8). Unity may be hard to achieve, but it has great strength (Eph. 4:11-15; Mark 3:24-25).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us all come to the unity of Your purpose, realize progress is often incremental, and seek Your wisdom is the timing and specifics of actions taken; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-11-19 The Hard Part Begins

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-11-19

The Hard Part Begins

What’s Happening: “13-year-old kidnap victim, Jayme Closs, has been found…and she’s alive! This was the big news yesterday, as Jayme has been missing since the October 15 murder of her parents in their home near Barron, Wisconsin. She was found wandering the streets yesterday about 70 miles north of Barron in a small rural town there (https://www.yahoo.com/news/sheriff-jayme-closs-found-alive-suspect-custody-022922451.html). ‘Praise the Lord,’ said Allard, Jayme’s Aunt. “It’s the news we’ve been waiting on for three months. I can’t wait to get my arms around her. I just can’t wait.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I guess the rest of her family is relieved.”

Biblical Response:  “Probably in shock…most of these stories don’t have so happy an ending…though the murder of her parents will still be something Jayme will have to deal with…to say nothing of her own kidnapping.  I hope that her therapist – no doubt she will be assigned one – will help her realize God was not asleep at the switch.””

“Christians? How do we explain this (or any) tragedy? First, by saying God was just as sorrowful as Jayme’s family was (Rom. 12:15). Second, by explaining that Jayme’s parents and even Jayme herself were the victims of the evil unleashed in this world, against His will, and that things will not always be this way (Rom. 8:20-21). Listen to how the Living Bible puts it:

‘For on that day thorns and thistles, sin, death, and decay—the things that overcame the world against its will at God’s command—will all disappear, and the world around us will share in the glorious freedom from sin which God’s children enjoy.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to understand that You didn’t want any of this, but to receive unforced love You had to give us free will…and sometimes we choose poorly; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
