CLARITY – 12-27-19 Whereabouts Known

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-27-19

Whereabouts Known

What’s Happening: “A deadly typhoon (called a tropical cyclone or hurricane in some regions) struck the Philippines Christmas day and the death toll has risen to 28, with 12 still missing. The storm had sustained winds of 75mph with gusts to 125mph. It was named Phanfone (known locally as Ursula). Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 was the region’s deadliest, killing over 6,000 (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-50921944). ‘Communication lines are down. Electricity is still down,’ said Alkan police chief Jonathan Pablito.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What does a Typhoon in the Philippines have to do with me? Don’t get me wrong, it’s a pity what happened to them…but so?”

Biblical Response:  “Because all tragedy is indeed local, I see your point…but until we truly hurt for the loss of other folks, we won’t do anything about it. Sure, as long as we live in a fallen world (see Gen. 3), we can only lessen somebody’s loss, not prevent it…that’s why we should give to relief agencies who seek to ameliorate tragedy (James 2:15-18). The real tragedy might be those missing. Of course, there’s really no one missing…being omnipresent, God knows where they are (Ps. 139).”

“Christians? We believe in lessening others’ losses, sharing their suffering (Rom. 12:15)…besides, sometimes this gives us an opportunity to speak about the things that have eternal significance (1 Pet. 3:15), not just temporal. We remember the old saying, ‘People don’t care how much you give, until they know how much you care.’ Sometimes you earn the right to be heard, because you demonstrated your love by giving.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we don’t want to lessen our sincerity by merely writing a check, we don’t want our sacrifice to go unnoticed…maybe what You want is not equal giving, but equal sacrifice…help us; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 11-12-19

Chariots and Horses

What’s Happening: “They kind of don’t want it to leak, kind of do…and pray that it never really does. I’m talking about the ‘rumored’ second nuclear-capable sub, the Sinpo-C, of North Korea. A satellite photo revealed that the North Koreans had one, but this second one…with accelerated development after the Trump/Kim talks…is only hear-say and strategic leaks. It might be true…as a deterrent to the U.S. should talks fail…or it might be false…to keep their leverage with Trump up. And, in a sense, nobody wants a sub to spring a leak (https://www.yahoo.com/news/north-korean-threat-evolving-come-223000664.html).  Quoting an article that appeared in the National Interest on the 10th, ‘The nuclear weapons, and the rocket technology to deliver them, are extremely expensive investments by Pyongyang, and the Kim dynasty is unlikely to give them up entirely because they are seen as guarantors against a U.S. attack.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Yeah, but their nuke-sub fleet is puny beside ours”

Biblical Response:  “True…but then it only takes one hit…or the threat of it…to sway opinion.  Of course, that assumes we only attack by submarine…which is not a serious consideration. Biblically, we are not to trust in horses (or chariots – Ps. 20:7). Our President boasts of the strongest military on earth…and he’s probably right. But then again, we’ve aborted over 60 million babies since Roe v. Wade (1973). It is not good to give God a reason to not favor you.”

“Christians? The familiar part of the above verse is that we should not trust in chariots or horses, but the rest of the verse is worth quoting, too… ‘but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.’ (KJV)”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we want to be strong…we also want to be humble; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 8-23-19 Victims AND Champions

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -8-23-19

Victims AND Champions

What’s Happening: “The New York Times’ 1619 Project was introduced this week and immediately it was pounced on by conservatives as an attempt to reframe America’s early history…and there is some truth in both (https://www.yahoo.com/news/newt-gingrich-says-slavery-needs-170017001.html) and (https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/new-york-times-1619-project-leaves-out/). Early African-Americans were victims of oppression, but they also were champions, doing some pretty heroic deeds which didn’t fit the NYT victim narrative. The omission of various positive contributions throughout our history rewrites our record to give a distorted view of reality. Perhaps this is a prelude to a real push for reparations, Many of the Dems running for the Presidency in 2020 have this as an important plank in their campaign to win a lion’s share of the African-American vote.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Does it really matter how we got here? We’re here…good or bad…and we just need to learn, and move on.”

Biblical Response:  “I’ll agree with the need to move on, but  an accurate understanding of how ‘we got here’ is of paramount importance when it comes to charting a course to where we go from here. If we are to eliminate the division in our country, we have got to quit using hyphenated American terms. We are not African-Americans, Native-Americans, Hispanic-Americans…just Americans! Of course this also eliminates the victim card the left is so quick to play. Have these important contributing groups been treated poorly in our past…even our very recent past? Absolutely. But painting them as victims and in need of a groveling populace who can never adequately assuage their guilt…well, it’s not helpful, motivational, or productive.

The ‘can-do’ American spirit is stifled by victimhood. It is difficult to reap what you sow (Gal. 6:7), if you are told repeatedly that others reaped where you sowed…you will have a tendency to quit sowing. This may be true in some cases, but the Lord is quite capable of rendering justice (Rom. 12:19).”

“Christians? We need to be examples of even-handedness (Col.4:1; 1 Cor. 11:1); we can’t invite people to do as we do, if we are not fair ourselves. We need to let truth be our guide (John 8:32), and face our true history whether it’s to our liking or not.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to move on…in truth and justice; there’s a lot of work we all have to do; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 12-15-18 Lessons of History

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 12-15-18

Lessons of History

What’s Happening: “Nearly six years ago (2013) a little ripple was all that was made when gun sales were banned from all but government entities in Venezuela. Today, there may be some regret…and gun toting populaces might take note. Venezuela now has the highest homicide rate in the world. Some 90+ per 100,000…compare that with the U.S.’s rate of 4.9 per 100,000 (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/country-crashes-burns-venezuelans-offer-chilling-warning-gun-grabbers/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=conservative-brief-CT&utm_campaign=dailyam&utm_content=conservative-tribune). ‘Guns would served as a vital pillar to remaining a free people, or at least able to put up a fight.’ lamented Javier Vanegas a teacher who fled Venezuela recently.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “The fewer the guns, the fewer the gun crimes.”

Biblical Response:  “I know the conventional mantra, but that simply is not borne out historically. Could it be that man’s fallen nature means those who want guns will find a way to get them? And exert the undue leverage of evil over the law-abiding? You can’t confiscate enough…if it’s not guns, it’s knives…or machetes…or vehicles…or toxins, etc. You can’t incarcerate fast enough…or put enough cops on the street…or write enough laws. What is the solution? Until you have a universal nature change…which may not happen this side of heaven…the best way that’s been found is to give everyone the power to defend themselves…(and that’s to say nothing about the restraint of a tyrannical government as power corrupts)”

“Christians? While we should be in the business of saving souls, it might not hurt to have the ability to save some bodies, too (Luke 22:36-38)!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while none of us wants violence, those that threaten it must be met appropriately. Give us wisdom and discretion; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-9-18 Duh! You Think?!

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-9-18

Duh! You Think?!

What’s Happening:  “A couple of Apple’s investors (controlling collectively over $2 billion in stock) have written the board of the tech giant complaining that there is a growing body of evidence that the over-use of technology might be harming kids’ brains (https://www.yahoo.com/news/investors-urge-apple-tackle-growing-231350306.html). “We’re not software engineers, and we don’t pretend to be,” one of them said. “And we’re not doctors and we don’t pretend to be. What we’re saying is, hey, software engineers, hey doctors, get together and form a real effort to understand this issue better and go where the research takes you.”

Knee-jerk Response: “What’s bad about technology?”

Biblical Response:  “Nothing, in itself, but it does do all your critical thinking for you and for kids…well, maybe they need to play outside more. The problem with many devices is also their greatest asset:  they do things for you that you don’t have time to do for yourself….an asset for adults who never have enough time, but not for kids with developing brains. Kids not only need to develop their brains, but also their social skills. They need to learn how to make real friends, not just virtual ones.”

“Christians? Lessons like ‘bad company corrupts good morals’ (1 Cor. 15:33) should be learned on the playground or in the neighborhood (or in that now old-fashioned Bible)…it’s sure not taught on Facebook or your smartphone. Technology was intended (by God) to be a blessing, not a curse. Of course, parents might have to turn away from their smartphones long enough to tell their children: ‘No.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to not allow what was supposed to be a blessing to become a distraction (or a curse); in Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent
