Yawn…Is Anybody Surprised?

What’s Happening:  “The memo from Nunes is released…without redactions…to the Democrats’ chagrin (and the FBI & DOJ) and the Republicans’ glee. It establishes the Hillary Campaign and the DNC as the funders of the dossier, and the dossier as the primary reason the FISA Court approved wiretapping Gates (to be of the few to read the full text of the memo, go to the link) (https://www.axios.com/read-nunes-memo-fbi-doj-fisa-mueller-7fb8bcb7-1f18-4294-aa95-628d2f67bcdf.html). Rep. Devin Nunes: ‘The Committee has discovered serious violations of the public trust, and the American people have a right to know when officials in crucial institutions are abusing their authority for political purposes.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Perhaps I can see why the swamp must be drained.”

Biblical Response:  “You think?! George Washington, in his farewell address, warned of party factionism (I’m a registered independent). It’s a big deal to go against the status quo (keeping things the way they’ve always been). It’s an even bigger deal to vote differently. Sure, we pay lip service to ‘draining the swamp.’ but once we get into the voting booth, we pull the lever the way we always have. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.”

“Christians? We’re not immune to insanity, either. The Scripture has lain out a clear path for us (Is. 55:8-9; Prov. 3:5-6). Taking that path, however, requires a death to self, but any other path is unthinkable (Prov. 16:25). Should we just not vote? Perhaps that’s why we’re in this mess in the first place.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to realize that the name ‘Christian’ carries stern responsibilities; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 2-2-18 Depressed

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-2-18

Depressed

What’s Happening:  “It has been reported today that Fidel Castro Diaz- Balart took his life (committed suicide) at age 68. He spoke four languages, was a nuclear physicist, but had been treated recently for depression. He is the only child of a short marriage between Fidel and Mirta Diaz-Balart, but as Castro’s eldest son and looking a lot like the Communist dictator, he was called “Fidelito” or little Castro. He was in charge of Cuba’s nuclear program from 1980-1992 (https://www.yahoo.com/news/fidel-castros-son-commits-suicide-cuban-state-run-013151712.html). ‘Castro Diaz-Balart, who had been attended by a group of doctors for several months due to a state of profound depression, committed suicide this morning,’ the Cubadebate website said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What does all this mean?”

Biblical Response:  “Simply that power, wealth, and education do not exempt anyone from depression. There are some that will try to spin this into a conspiracy theory…or that he, like his father (who died Nov. 25, 2016) isn’t really dead… etc., but the truth remains: there, but for the grace of God, go we.”

“Christians? Can a Christian be depressed? Yes. Should a Christian be depressed? Of course not. We have everything to look forward to (Heb. 13:5). However, we still live in this world and we have to constantly consider ourselves as citizens of another kingdom (Eph. 2:19), just passing through. We may live in this world, but we don’t have to be of this world (John 15:19:17:14). Besides, in a sense, suicide is really murder as “you are not your own.” (1 Cor. 6:19)

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to exhibit the kind of selflessness that leaves how long we are here up to You, in spite of our misery…and knowing You will supply the grace; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 2-1-18 It’s Only a Memo

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-1-18

It’s Only a Memo

What’s Happening:  “The FBI has indicated the Nunes’ memo, which might be released today (the President has had it since Monday – he has five days to decide whether it should be released – the Senate Intelligence Committee voted for it to be released) might not be accurate and should not be released – of course, they fear the contents of the memo might show that they have abused the FISA Warrant’s power and the unmasking that might have occurred (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-russia-memo/fbi-expresses-grave-concerns-over-republican-memos-accuracy-idUSKBN1FK25P). ‘The FBI was provided a limited opportunity to review this memo the day before the committee voted to release it,’ the FBI said. ‘As expressed during our initial review, we have grave concerns about material omissions of fact that fundamentally impact the memo’s accuracy.’

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What about the Democrat’s memo? Whom should we believe?”

Biblical Response:  “The Republicans have blocked the Democrat version (presumably because they hold the majority on the Committee). As far as belief? Neither…Both… Whatever…it’s just a memo…it has no officiality (is that a word?). As if we didn’t have enough to worry about! (the DPRK is on the cusp of declaring nuclear war…so is Iran, Palestine is apoplectic about our declaring Jerusalem as Israel’s capital [which we actually did back in 1995 … by law], we just had a suicide bomb kill over a hundred in Kabul, we’ve declared that Pakistan, [a nuclear state] is not our friend, etc.).”

“Christians? Do we give much credence to something written about something? Not as much as the ‘something’ itself (John 21:25).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we need and want to be led only by the truth, let us not get too worked up over what others think; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 1-31-18 Lunar Trifecta

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-31-18

Lunar Trifecta

What’s Happening:  “It hasn’t happened since 1982 (35+ years), but the Moon will be doing something special in the sky tonight…especially if you live in Hawaii or Alaska…less so on the West Coast…the rest of us: not so much. A Blue Moon occurs every time you have a second Full Moon in a month (hence the rarity statement of ‘once-in a-Blue-Moon’);  a Supermoon is another rarity: at Apogee (or close approach – this moon will be only 223,820 miles from earth – 236,000 is average); a Lunar Total Eclipse, another rarity, occurs when all three, the Sun-Moon-and Earth line up – a Lunar Eclipse occurs when the Moon enters Earth’s shadow; all three occur simultaneously only very rarely…TONIGHT! (https://www.yahoo.com/news/lunar-showstopper-1st-super-blue-blood-moon-35-105224938.html).

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Should I hide under the kitchen table?”

Biblical Response:  “No, unless you are of the ‘Chicken Little’ persuasion (always thinking the sky is falling!) Seriously, unless you are in a good viewing area you won’t notice much difference…of course, pointing out these facts might make you look intelligent…and nerdy.”

“Christians? Do we believe in celestial events. Sure, there are lots of them recorded in Scripture (Joel 2:30, Dan. 6:27, Ps. 18:13, etc.). Often, big events in history are accompanied by signs and wonders – I’m thinking, for example, about the ‘star in the East’ the wisemen followed (Matt. 2:2). How should we respond to these celestial wonders?  Awe, not fear (Luke 2:9-10),”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to see celestial events as You having everything under control; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 1-27-18 Fleeting Focus

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-27-18

Fleeting Focus

What’s Happening:  “A satellite launch last week to test a new rocket put the satellite (dubbed Humanity Star) into a short-lived orbit (it will decay and fall back to earth being harmlessly burned up in the atmosphere after nine months). It looks kind of like a disco ball and ‘The Humanity Star is intended to serve as a focal point for humanity as every single person on Earth will have the opportunity to see and experience it,’ Rocket Lab, the launcher said (https://www.yahoo.com/news/astronomers-really-hate-bright-disco-192852945.html). ‘I know many astronomers are upset at this unnecessary object that will cause light pollution, although again we don’t know its orbit or brightness yet, so we don’t know how bad it will be,’ astrophysicist J. J. Eldridge said on Twitter.”

Knee-jerk Response:  “So if I see a flash of light that might be it, huh?”

Biblical Response:  “Yep…and it might not…it’s only temporary…maybe it’s intended to distract.you (kind of like the mission of every shiny object), but don’t lose your focus on the really important things…like faith, family and freedom.”

“Christians? Are we for distraction? Sure, as long as it’s only temporary and it doesn’t take our focus too far afield (2 Tim. 2:22-24). We don’t need to be too serious about fleeting things…we just need to keep the main thing, THE MAIN THING (Heb. 12:2).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we need Your help in keeping us focused in on the things that really matter, not being unnecessarily distracted towards the shiniest object; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 1-26-18 Details

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-26-18

Details

What’s Happening:  “The Administration finally released Thursday the long-promised details on a starting point for negotiations on immigration reform: 1.8 million “dreamers” can be on a long path to citizenship, limited immigration for spouses and children only (no other “chain migration”), $25 Billion in trust funds for a border wall (and beefed up security on our borders – more technology and border guards, etc.), and an elimination of the visa lottery system, etc. (https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/25/politics/white-house-immigration-framework/index.html). The White House termed it a ‘dramatic concession’ and a ‘compromise.’”

Knee-jerk Response:  “The devil’s always in the details!”

Biblical Response:  “You may be right…in any case it’s a long way from done…whatever compromise is agreed to must get at least 60 votes in the Senate and whatever House changes are made still have to be signed by the President. I’d say we were still a long way from the ‘details.’”

“Christians? Should we be merciful? Of course! (Matt. 10:8) I mean, who doesn’t want to live in ‘Disneyland’ (read; America)? However, it’s not enough to want to get free stuff paid for by taxpayers, immigrants must also assimilate (read: speak English), make a valuable contribution to our society (read: merit-based immigration), put America first (before the country they came from), be non-felons, …the list could go on.

Sounds like you are making a lot of conditions for immigrants…this is ‘Disneyland,’ isn’t it? I mean, they could go home.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to see people for what they are dead set on becoming…we weren’t anything to write home about when we first arrived, either; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 1-25-18 Incommunicado

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-25-18

Incommunicado

What’s Happening:  “The judge in the recent Turpin case (David Allen and Louise Ann Turpin – recently accused of chaining, torturing and endangering their 13 children) has just ordered the parents, who are held in jail on 12 million dollars bail each, not contact their children in any way until January, 2021. The trial, in Riverside, CA (or some other court assigned venue due to the wide publicity) will probably be over long before then (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2018/01/24/turpin-parents-court-hearing/1062005001/). ‘You must not contact them, except through your lawyer,’ County Judge Emma Smith said.”

Knee-jerk Response:  “Don’t parents have the right to talk with their children? Aren’t folks innocent until proven guilty?”

Biblical Response:  “Yes, and yes…generally. I mean, it is generally the right and responsibility of parents to communicate with their kids, but sometimes it might be better to have no communication rather than harmful communication. Determining that is what hearings and judges are for.  The trial will determine their innocence or guilt.”

“Christians? Of course, we are obligated to care for our kids (Eph. 6:4). Unfortunately, that does not always happen. That’s where families or church leadership steps in to lovingly correct the situation. Occasionally, if all else fails, the law system of a government entity steps in. Failing this, the law of sowing and reaping (Gal. 6:7) takes over.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, give the parents their due and help the children move past their abuse in forgiveness and renewed vision for their futures; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 1-23-18 It Depends on to Whom You Talk

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-24-18

It Depends on to Whom You Talk

What’s Happening:  “What is in the Nunes Memo? Is it really the Watergate of our day? (With all the leaking going on in Washington, the classified text conclusions of the House Intelligence Committee’s Chairman, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) personal investigation into the Russia probe, might be on public display anyway). It really depends on to whom you talk (https://www.npr.org/2018/01/24/580068641/the-memo-the-bureau-and-the-missing-texts-get-caught-up-on-the-war-over-the-fbi). The Democrats say it’s a smokescreen, the Republicans may prefer to talk about the memo, rather than release it’s content. Then there’s the conveniently missing five months of texts (56,000 texts) from FBI agent Strzok to FBI lawyer Lisa Page.”

Knee-jerk Response: “Whom are we to believe?”

Biblical Response:  “Again, it depends on to whom you talk. I mean, who’s got the absolute perspective? God. I’m going to write a book someday on “The Myth of the Closet.” We do all sorts of things ‘in-the-closet’ thinking no one can see…but God does.”

“Christians? We’re some of the worst offenders…or should I say ‘self-deceivers.’ Thankfully, Someone’s already paid for that (Rom. 5:8). Still, it behooves us to deal in absolute truth. And that’s what the Holy Spirit is for (John 15:12-13).”

CLARITY – 1-23-18 Border Wall Looking Better

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-23-18

Border Wall Looking Better

What’s Happening:  “Mexico’ murders, at 25, 339 (mostly by drug cartels), is more than three times as high as the U.S. (and not as populous). The border wall is looking better all the time (https://www.yahoo.com/news/were-more-25-000-homicides-010954454.html). ‘Even though Mexico has a significant problem with violence, it is plainly false that Mexico is the most dangerous country in the world,’ said Mexico’s Foreign Minister.”

Knee-jerk Response: “Maybe I should cancel my vacation south of the border.”

Biblical Response:  “You think? Not that you’re going to be there to raise the ire of a drug cartel, but just being an American with money makes you a target…Texas beaches are looking better all the time! So is Trump’s border wall. Sure, determined smugglers can find a way (over, under, or through), but that’s what the Border Patrol and high-tech surveillance are for. No wonder folks want to come here…where the rule of law trumps (pun intended) might makes right.”

“Christians? Of course it’s wrong to kill (Ex.20:13), but more than that, it’s wrong to even force your philosophy on someone else (2 Tim. 2:24). Although we believe we have the superior ideology, we also believe that its superiority will out (will be eventually proven to be right) (1 John 5:9). Keeping bad out may win the short game, but producing good from within is the only recipe for long-term success.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, teach us that you defeat an ideology with an ideology…that there’s a belief system that squelches (and pays in full for) the evil, while the good eventually dominates…humbly so; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

Is Anywhere Safe?

What’s Happening:  “How about some good news for a change? The two IED’s that exploded around 5:30pm at Eagle Ridge Mall at Lake Wales, Florida (about 30 minutes east of Tampa) injured or killed no one. That’s the good news…that no one is apparently safe anywhere: the bad news. (https://www.yahoo.com/news/2-ieds-explode-florida-mall-073521103.html. ‘It’s very concerning to us. We’re a family-oriented community. This is a family-oriented mall,’ said Deputy Police Chief Troy Schulz, at a press conference Sunday.”

Knee-jerk Response: “There go trips to the mall. I’m going to do all my shopping online.”

Biblical Response:  “Which may be exactly what terrorists want…what with wanting to change our culture and cyber-terrorism and all. Living in fear is exactly what terrorism is all about. It is reasonable to want to be safe, but is there really anywhere safe?”

“Christians? That is a great question deserving a great answer: YES! Let me put it like my friend, Ralph Irwin, put it when asked the same question as a medic in VietNam (imagine being on a jungle battlefield armed with only a first aid kit!). He said, ‘The safest place is the center of God’s will.’ (Psalm 18:19) When put like that, fear has no power.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, grant that we might operate in faith, not fear; there are plenty of things we can do something about to fret over the things with which we cannot: in Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
