CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-27-18

The Last Laugh

What’s Happening:  “Bill Cosby, famed comedian, and dubbed ‘America’s Dad’ for his work on the Cosby Show in the 80’s (as a Doctor…his wife posed as an attorney), was found guilty on three counts of aggravated sexual assault yesterday, with a potential of serving 30 years. Cosby, now 80, claims he’s innocent and will appeal the verdict which took the jury 14 hours (https://www.westernjournal.com/bill-cosby-found-guilty-of-sexual-assault/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-WJ&utm_campaign=dailyam&utm_content=western-journal). Making closing arguments, Special Prosecutor Kristen Feden said, ‘She’s not the con. He is.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Give the guy a break…he’s eighty and way beyond being a threat to anyone!”

Biblical Response:  “True enough….that’s why the judge will probably have the three 10-year terms served concurrently, not consecutively. Still, as much as he was enjoyed by audiences, he was NOT enjoyed by the victims of his assaults and the jury did convict him on all three charges. The higher the profile of a celebrity, the more the public needs to hold him accountable. They sure enjoy the benefits (economically, etc.) of their notoriety. ”

“Christians? He’s probably not joking now…and he shouldn’t. He may have escaped earthly accountability on most of the crimes, but there is no statute of limitations in heaven (hopefully he’ll accept Christ’s payment-in-full on the cross – of course, he’d have to admit to the crimes first [1 John 1:9]).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help all those women who were his victims get beyond their experiences and help us all to realize: ‘there, but for the grace of God, go we;’in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 4-26-18 Pleading the 9th

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-26-18

Pleading the 9th

What’s Happening:  “Michael Cohen, the President’s embattled personal attorney who recently had his office raided by the FBI, has stated that he’ll assert his Fifth Amendment right of non-self-incrimination if he testifies on anything concerning porn star Stormy Daniels (https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-lawyer-says-hell-plead-fifth-porn-actress-230526635–politics.html). In other news, Trump’s nominee to head the VA, Dr. Ronny Jackson, is weighing his options amid allegations from unnamed sources claiming he has a drinking problem and he ‘prescribed’ errantly…couple that with Democrat accusations that he has no experience leading large corporate-like concerns (like the VA’s 300,000+ employees) and the President’s leaving the current status of his nomination up to him and you have some doubts as to his confirmation (https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-veterans-nominee-faces-allegations-drinking-prescriptions-004043253.htm). It’s not been a good week for the President.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Chaos, chaos everywhere!”

Biblical Response:  “Much to the delight of the Democrats, who are trying to score a “blue wave” upset in the midterm elections. However, the American people may be smarter than to buy into media storms that smack of creativeness and Democrat obstructionism. Truth is not mere allegation  and ‘unnamed sources’ are too-easily obtained and too-often cited to be believable. In fact, I think ‘chaos’ is an old Cold War communist tactic (and the name of an evil nemesis organization in a James Bond movie).”

“Christians? There’ll be no ‘pleading the Fifth’ in heaven (you might plead the 9th [thou shalt not lie – Ex. 20:16]…actually, it’s kind of hard pleading either in front of an all-knowing God). Confession is the biblical alternative (James 5:16).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to choose leaders that are men and women of integrity who live by what they say and free us from false or baseless accusation; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 4-25-18 Prophetic or Flattery?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-25-18

Prophetic or Flattering?

What’s Happening:  “The date of the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, May 14, may have Cyrus-like prophetic significance: after all, it is 70 years to the day since Israel declared statehood (the number 70 has special significance for Israelis – 70 years of Babylonian captivity, 70 names for Jerusalem, 70 years of King David’s reign, etc.). Others who know Trump’s propensity toward ego say the the Cyrus/Trump meme is just flattery (https://www.yahoo.com/news/donald-trump-israelis-hear-echoes-ancient-emperor-155859705.html). Minister of Justice Ayelet Shaked tweeted, ‘Trump is in his generation, as Cyrus was in his.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Trump would egocentrically like it to be prophetic, huh?”

Biblical Response:  “Probably…though there’s evidence he could cite to support the claim. I guess we should leave that to the conspiracists, the prognosticators, and the biblical scholars. Maybe that makes Jared into Ezra or Nehemiah (Jared, the President’s son-in-law and Jewish, is slated to stand in for Trump at the dedication). Or maybe that’s just trying to interpret the Bible by the morning paper – a practice that has led many astray.”

“Christians? Maybe these are just coincidences and rumors of coincidences (Matt. 24:6). In any case, there is little we can do to enhance or deter prophetic history…past or future. While we want to have influence in the Mideast – hence, moving our Embassy from Tel-Aviv to Israel’s capital, Jerusalem – we should never forget that our primary task in Israel (or anywhere in the world, for that matter) is evangelism. Any action that will further that goal is justified (Prov. 11:30).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we want to be spiritual, not carnal, let us not get too far afield in our pursuit of the prophetic; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 4-24-18 Irrelevant Seizure

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-24-18

Irrelevant Seizure

What’s Happening:  “Apparently it didn’t matter that the Antioch, Tennessee shooter had his AR-15 rifle seized in Illinois only months prior…returned by police to his father, and subsequently to him, it still killed at least four and wounded others. Stricter gun laws would have been irrelevant. Of course, that doesn’t change the tragedy of what happened last Sunday (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/shooters-guns-seized-control-failed/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-CT&utm_campaign=dailypm&utm_content=conservative-tribune). ‘Among those weapons seized by those authorities (in Illinois) was the AR-15 rifle used at the Waffle House today,’ said Don Aaron, spokesman for Nashville’s finest.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Which is why we should confiscate all firearms”

Biblical Response:  “Even that would probably not have helped (if that were even possible). If someone is bent on taking lives, he’ll get a gun (or, as in Toronto yesterday, rent a van…surely we’re not advocating van control!)  Then, there are those who are deterred from robbing a home because they are afraid to encounter an armed homeowner…that deterrence would be gone if all guns were confiscated.”

“Christians? Although the Bible was written before guns were invented, there is no indication in Scripture either of sword control. In fact, when Jesus was preparing to go to the cross, he warned His disciples that they would encounter opposition in this world and that there would come a time when a sword would be preferable to a cloak (Luke 22:35-38). Of course, there will also come a time when swords will be melted down to form plowshares (Isaiah 2:4, Joel 3:10, etc.), but that time isn’t yet. Till then, we have an obligation to defend our families (1 Tim. 5:8).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to know when to defend ourselves, to defend others, or lay down our defenses in favor of sacrifice; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 4-23-18 Pompeo and Circumstance

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-23-18

Pompeo and Circumstance

What’s Happening:  “Having already established a relationship of diplomacy with Kim Jong-Un and been confirmed earlier by a bipartisan majority to be CIA Director, it may be hard for the Senate NOT to vote to confirm Mike Pompeo,  but they will likely try. Already, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (who votes today) has said they will not vote to recommend him, The full Senate vote occurs later this week (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/04/23/pompeo-trumps-pick-for-secretary-state-faces-tough-battle-for-senate-confirmation.html). ‘We certainly hope some members will change their minds,’ White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders-Huckabee said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Going to talk with Kim was kind of like assuming too much, huh?”

Biblical Response:  “Maybe…of course, you might think such a move might satisfy his critics on the diplomacy front (it’s kind of hard to say he’s  not diplomatic when he’s just pulled off the diplomacy move of the decade!). Probably, this is just another example of Trump-hate. You know, that political bent of being against everything Trump.”

“Christians? It’s hard to be against sin and not the sinner, but that is what we are told to do (“The good hate the wickedness of the wicked, and the wicked the goodness of the good.” [Prov. 29:27 LB]) What am I saying? That you cannot oppose the man  just because you oppose his personal preferences.”

CLARITY – 4-21-18 Western Civilization at Risk

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-21-18

Western Civilization at Risk

What’s Happening:  “Everywhere you look, says one article, Christianity is at risk…in the media, in schools, in politics. Persecution in some countries means certain death or ethnic cleansing, in others, being blackballed from from competition or employment. This is nothing new in the predominantly Muslim Middle-East, but in the West it’s a new and growing trend (http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2018/04/21/how-long-will-be-allowed-to-remain-christian.html). ‘How long will I be allowed to remain a Christian?’ one believer asked.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “All religions are the same aren’t they…just traditional fairy tales that make suffering and death explicable…an opiate.”

Biblical Response:  “Actually Karl Marx said it better: ‘”Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people’ Of course, you may hesitate quoting the most famous Communist philosopher. All of Western Civilization was built on Christianity (which historical fact is no longer taught in our public education system).”

“Christians? We are no strangers to persecution (2 Cor. 23-28), and the Lord always provides sufficient grace for the moment (2 Cor. 12:9). Still, that’s no reason to be overcome (Rom. 12:21).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to counter lies with Your truth and overcome the natural tendency to be complacent. Help us to identify with those who suffer, before we suffer ourselves (Rom. 12:15); in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 4-20-18 Legal Maneuvering

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-20-18

Legal Maneuvering

What’s Happening:  “In a surprise announcement yesterday, the administration said former Mayor of New York and United States attorney, Rudy Giuliani, will be joining Sekulow and Cobb on the President’s legal team. Administration officials hope he will bring Bob Mueller’s distracting investigation to a close (https://www.westernjournal.com/ct/developing-giuliani-takes-new-unexpected-place-on-trump-team/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-CT&utm_campaign=dailypm&utm_content=conservative-tribunehttps://www.westernjournal.com/ct/developing-giuliani-takes-new-unexpected-place-on-trump-team/?utm_source=Email&utm_medium=newsletter-CT&utm_campaign=dailypm&utm_content=conservative-tribune). One of the President’s lawyers, Jay Sekulow,  made the announcement,”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Finally…now maybe these knuckleheads can get something done!.”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not…and I identify with the frustration. BTW, you (and the rest of the electorate) put these “knuckleheads” in office. To say the Russian probe has been a distraction for this administration might be an understatement. Still Congress has been reluctant to do anything more that posture partisanly. Meanwhile, the very agenda that most of America elected Trump to do languishes.”

“Christians? We can’t lay all the blame elsewhere. Unless we pray, the swamp doesn’t get drained…or it drains only to reveal a secular humanism which is a worse fate (Hosea 8:7).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we need Your Holy Spirit to help us navigate from where we are to where You want us to be; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 4-19-18 Does the Revolucion Continue?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-19-18

Does the Revolucion Continue?

What’s Happening:  “The announcement of a transition from the reign of the “Revolutionary” Castros (Fidel Started his reign in 1959, stepping aside for his brother, Raul, in 2008) to Diaz-Canel is supposed to occur sometime today. The big question is: Will the new leader continue the reforms of late or will Diaz-Canel be even more repressive? (https://www.yahoo.com/news/raul-castro-step-down-cuba-012055924.html). Said Prof. at American University School of Public Affairs and Latin American expert William Leogrande, ‘If the updating fails, Raul will be remembered as just one more reform communist who couldn’t force the system to change despite his best efforts,’

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I don’t care who leads, we just don’t need to send down there anymore personnel.”

Biblical Response:  “Who leads matters…a whole lot. And your reference to additional people is probably because so many have been sent home with a mysterious hearing loss (which indeed may be caused by an infrasonic sound being broadcast as a American Consulate ‘welcoming package’). Whether Diaz-Canel will lead on or lead back matters to Cubans and Americans who are praying for them.”

“Christians? While the door is cracked open…it may shut any day… churches across America should start missionary efforts in Cuba and raise up nationals (Cubans going to Cubans – you can kick non-Cubans out, but it’s harder to eject citizens). Regardless of who leads, our calling has not changed (Matt. 28:18-20). With an open-to-the-Gospel leader, however, will go much blessing. ”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we are asking Your Holy Spirit to undergird the efforts of people we send, either from here or there; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 4-18-18 Death Still Certain…Taxes? Not So Much

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-18-18

Death Still Certain…Taxes?

Not So Much

What’s Happening:  “Today the IRS promises to have everything up and running…well, at least by Thursday..9 out of 10 taxpayers will receive their refunds within 21 days…the IRS (probably the most hated of the federal agencies) assures U.S. taxpayers. The problem was with (only...allegedly) their e-file system…a computer glitch or overload? https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2016/02/03/irs-computer-problems/79792890/. ‘The IRS is still assessing the scope of the outage.’’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Is this good news or bad news?”

Biblical Response:  “Probably just news. There will likely be no difference unless you are like the majority of taxpayers…reluctant procrastinators. Of course, we do have the fairest system around…we get security, highways, a court system, etc…. Still, I have a few questions…like how come if I owe the IRS, I am charged interest; but if they owe me, how come they pay no interest? Just asking.”

“Christians? We should pay our taxes (Mk. 12:16-17). A careful reading of that scripture doesn’t, however,  get us off the hook with God UNLESS we make Him the recipient of our very selves. Taxes and the first death are certain (Rev. 20:6). After that? Well, that’s up to you.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to see our tax system as the worst on planet earth…except for all the others; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 4-17-18 The Search for ET

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-17-18

The Search for ET

What’s Happening:  “NASA will launch (next Monday) its next ambitious exoplanet telescope satellite, actually designated a Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) at 6:32pm from Cape Canaveral. It will analyze the effects of transits made by planets as they go in front of light coming from stars ‘nearby’ (in galactic terms). Since the first planet outside our solar system was discovered in 1992, there have been well in excess of 2,000 such potential incubators of life discovered (https://www.yahoo.com/news/nasa-launch-next-big-step-164204518.html).  Previous attempts at planet-hunting have only looked at postage stamp portions of our universe (10 degrees by 10 degrees). TESS will examine all 360 by 360 degrees.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So maybe ET does really exist…”

Biblical Response:  “Sorry to disappoint. Even if ET, though really a fictional character in a movie by the same name (1982),  were a colloquialism for all creatures extra-terrestrial, the possibility of life being discovered on a distant world is less than remote (read: impossible). For the scientifically inclined, it defies Mendel’s Law. For the biblically inclined…we know better (read the article in ETHOS, pgs. 331-335).”

“Christians? Do we believe in the pursuit of scientific advancement, or exploring the universe? Absolutely! Christians will, if history is a good predictor, enjoy the benefits of both…however, as a discoverer of things our Creator created or of laws He set in motion. Life didn’t evolve…at least not carbon-based life. Things have a tendency to devolve, not evolve. We’ve got an explanation for that, too (Rom. 5:12; 8;20-23).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to look at the universe through  a biblical perspective and have the right paradigm for our discoveries; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent
