A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-24-18
Death en Masse
What’s Happening: If blood cries from the ground (Gen. 4:10) the sound must be deafening from Veracruz, Mexico. 250 skulls have been located in a mass grave (many of them children that have gone missing) alongside their clothes (which may aid in their identification) and are probably a direct result of the war declared on the drug cartels by the government nearly a decade ago (https://www.cnn.com/2017/03/15/americas/mexico-mass-grave-skulls-found-veracruz/index.html). ‘”They give us just the bones, but at least I can have them, I can keep it some place where it won’t be rained on, where I can put a flower on it,” a woman told a CNN reporter.
Knee-Jerk Response: “I guess fighting the cartels doesn’t pay.”
Biblical Response: “Maybe not in the short-term…everyone who died (some were kidnapped, tortured, then executed) should be regarded as heroes…freedom fighters trying to take their country back. In the long run, their blood spilled, some voluntarily, some involuntarily, will found a country free of drugs and prosperous. At least that is the vision some have.”
“Christians? Nobody’s for the indiscriminate taking of lives…except the drug cartels…and they’ll get their just desserts….here, there or both. Freedom isn’t free. Sacrifice is often required (Heb. 9:22). Christ’s death purchased freedom in eternity…temporality may require similar sacrifice.”
Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray: “Heavenly Father, help us to mete out justice where we can and count on Your judgement for the rest; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
