Some Alliances Are Good

What’s Happening: “NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), in a meeting to get the briefing about recent Iranian developments, agreed (mostly) with the U. S. actions taken in retaliation (this includes the airstrike and the drone strike that killed Gen. Soleimani), Monday. They did, however, caution Iran (https://www.yahoo.com/news/u-briefs-nato-over-iran-173642991.html). NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said, ‘We are united in condemning Iran’s support of a variety of different terrorist groups, At the meeting today, allies called for restraint and de-escalation. A new conflict would be in no one’s interest. So Iran must refrain from further violence and provocations.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Isn’t NATO kind of irrelevant these days?”

Biblical Response:  “With the Cold War mostly over (the Soviet Union is defunct and the Russian nuclear threat is a mere shadow of what it once was), you might think so. However, Europe is now threatened by other dangers (the competing hegemonies of the Middle East, etc.), and NATO’s relevancy may have been renewed. Then there’s Europe’s lust for a secure supply of oil and natural gas, Brexit, the immigration crisis (the invasion of Islam), and other forces of chaos. Used to be that NATO’s main reason for existence was countering the Warsaw Pact (originally the Soviet Union, Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland and Romania). Now that everything’s changed geo-politically, a new enemy may be actually helpful to NATO. We’ll see. That alliance was good in its time. It may be once again. Just as there are some bad alliances…there are some that are good.”

“…You make plans that are contrary to mine. You make alliances not directed by my Spirit, thus piling up your sins.” (Is. 30:1 NLT)

“Christians? We believe in good and bad alliances—some to be avoided and some to seek….like an alliance with God and not with the world (1 John 2:15-17). Of course, this is individual advice, but nations would do well to heed this also.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to realize the value of alliances and the expectations (nad power) that come with them…and seek only those that benefit; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

Nukes: Today’s Horses

What’s Happening: “Are we saying good-bye to the INF (Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces) agreement? Signed by both Soviet leader Gorbachev and then President Reagan in 1987 and hailed as one of the reasons for the end of the Cold War, an exit from the treaty has NATO leaders fearing another arms race and the placement of US nuclear cruise missiles in Europe (https://www.marketwatch.com/story/us-poised-to-leave-nuclear-treaty-stoking-fears-of-new-arms-race-2019-01-31?siteid=yhoof2&yptr=yahoo). ‘So we must prepare for a world without the Treaty,’ Oana Lungescu, chief spokeswoman for NATO, said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Let’s just stay in the treaty.”

Biblical Response:  “We can do so bilaterally probably, but that’s really just so much ‘sticking our head in the sand.’ If Russia is not complying with it, why should we? Sure, we can pretend they are in compliance and not prepare for reality…which is what they are hoping we will do…but try explaining that to the people of Des Moines, Iowa (follow the link).”

“Christians? We don’t believe in trusting in nukes anymore than our ancestors believed in trusting in horses (Ps. 20:7). Still, not preparing for war is only inviting aggression (Joel 3:9). And we must deal in truth. There is nothing else that can set us free (John 8:32).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to trust only in You and give our leaders the wisdom to seek only concrete assurances; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

One-Up-Man-Ship

What’s Happening:  “Some are saying this smacks of a second Cold War,; some say we all need to devise new ‘duck-and-cover’ drills; some say it’s just a measuring game or a display of testosterone…but the release of a video of ‘Russia’s new ‘Satan 2’ ICBM is no joke. Putin’s promise of a new weapon that is ‘invulnerable’ to western defenses seems to be ringing true (http://www.foxnews.com/world/2018/03/30/satan-2-nuclear-missile-again-test-launched-by-russia-as-putin-brags-invulnerable-arsenal.html). ‘No defense system will be able to withstand it,’’ Putin is reported to have said. With his congratulations for winning re-election, Trump is reported to have said, ‘If you want to have an arms race, we can do that…but I’ll win.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Sounds just like them…but who gets to do the drills? We do!”

Biblical Response:  “Probably just a bunch of bluster…but I get the sentiment. Besides, the ‘duck-and-cover’ drills may spare you the initial flying debris of a nuclear blast but there’s no drill for the fallout. I’m not sure those drills were/are for any more than to make the drillers feel better…I don’t think they really do much. The greatest deterrence is still termed appropriately  MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction). Oh well, we’re all going to die sometime.”

“Christians? Sure, we hate to succumb to a meaningless nuclear holocaust, but it’s the second death (Rev. 20:14) we really need to prepare for (Rev. 2:11). I’m all for preparing for whatever our enemies have developed (and spending the resources to defend), but death is inevitable…it’s not how we die that God judges us for, but how we live.”
