CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -5-15-19

Freedom Isn’t Free

What’s Happening: “The latest in Venezuela’s struggle for freedom (in January Juan Guaido, the National Assembly head, declared Maduro’s re-election bid to be a sham and his claim to the presidency illegitimate – last week, Guaido’s ‘coup’ attempt failed because the Russians and the Cubans stepped in to support Maduro) has the Security forces under Maduro blockading the members of the assembly from physically entering their building to meet. This intimidation follows the arrest of Guaido’s deputy, Edgar Zambrano (https://www.yahoo.com/news/venezuelan-lawmakers-accuse-security-services-intimidation-172132591.html).’SEBIN agents, using the excuse that there’s an explosive device within the facilities, took over the federal palace. We’re surrounded by intelligence agents,’ said lawmaker Manuela Bolivar.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I thought Maduro would have backed down by now…is there going to be a war?”

Biblical Response:  “Me, too. I guess Russia and Cuba have more influence over Maduro than anyone thought. As far as the question about war, I don’t know. What I do know is that freedom isn’t free. Sure, spiritual freedom was purchased by Christ on the Cross, But ‘setting the prisoners free’ (ps. 146:7) was personally costly. Physical freedom in this world is not free, either. Ask Nathan Hale (Revolutionary War martyr, who famously said, ‘Give me liberty, or give me death’…just before he was hung by the British as a spy).  Was there bloodshed for America to obtain its freedom? Yes…lots. Will there be bloodshed in Venezuela? No doubt. Many have died already…freedom isn’t free?”

“Christians? The concept of physical freedom is opposed by the devil and his minions…the same forces that oppose spiritual freedom. The devil will ultimately lose both battles (Matt, 16:18), but there has already been much bloodshed, and there will be more, before we beat our ‘swords into ploughshares’ (Isaiah 2:4).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be wise, but ready to sacrifice for freedom…You were; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 5-6-19 The Power of Knowledge

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -5-6-19

The Power of Knowledge

What’s Happening: “North Korea launched projectiles over the weekend that some fear may be a signal of the collapse of talks between Kim and Trump (Trump walked out of the last denuclearization talks). Some say they were not ICBMs and should not be taken by us or South Korea as anything but military preparedness (https://www.yahoo.com/news/skorea-says-nkorea-tested-tactical-guided-weapon-094239444.html). Kim’s talks with Putin last week add fuel to the rumor that Kim might be seeking sanction relief elsewhere, too. In any case, the distraction factor is high.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Is it time for ‘duck and cover’ drills?”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not, but ‘fear hath torment’ (1 John 4:18). Besides, those drills from the ‘50s only made school kids (and their parents) feel better about the personal survivability of a nuclear holocaust. If it isn’t North Korea and its bellicosity, it’s Venezuela and the Cuba-Russia-China threat…or the Iranian-Syrian threat against Israel…or what’s happening in the South China Sea…or the latest suicide bombing…or whatever. We just need to ‘chill out’ and realize God is not surprised by any of this. It is merely the ‘torment’ He was referring to.

Fear is like Capitalism…only in the negative. Capitalism works because it correctly assumes Man is basically bad. Greed, avarice, and envy are real (and sinful, but universal) emotions. Profiting from them is predictable. Fear is why mutually assured destruction (MAD) works today as a viable deterrent to nuclear war. This does not mean that we shouldn’t seek a world that is free from these wayward emotions, but realize utopian systems will never work without a Man that has been regenerated.”

“Christians? The reason why, though we are duly concerned, we are not ‘jacked up’ by the fear-mongering media, is that we know the liberation that comes with the knowledge of the truth (John 8:32). We can calmly comfort others while offering wisdom from on high because we know how it all turns out.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to take events in their eternal context and offer Your wisdom   and leave the hand-wringing to the enemy; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 3-26-19

Red Sky at Morning

What’s Happening: “When planes and troops from Russia landed at Caracas airport (Venezuela),  the U.S. saw it as a provocation, escalating the tensions that already exist between those who support Maduro (Cuba, Russia…and to a lesser extent, China) and those who support Juan Guaido (the OAS – Organization of American States – the U.S., and the rest of the western world – over 50 countries in all). Venezuela maintains the Russians are just there to service military equipment that some previous bilateral agreement purchased (https://www.yahoo.com/news/pompeo-urges-moscow-cease-unconstructive-behavior-venezuela-145013258.html). ‘The United States condemns Russia’s deployment of military aircraft and personnel to Caracas, which is another contradiction of both Nicolas Maduro’s and Russia’s calls for non-intervention in Venezuela and is a reckless escalation of the situation,’ said the State Department.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “This is just so much ‘sabre-rattling.’”’

Biblical Response:  “Maybe. I know Trump has said he is not taking the military option off the table. The Russians surely don’t want a war fought over a little two-bit dictatorship in a country on the other side of the world. Still, it would love to have a socialist puppet in our backyard…and they already have a lot invested in Cuba. With socialism on the Democrats’ playlist. I wouldn’t dismiss anything offhand. Hopefully, someone’s advising Trump to seek the diplomatic solution as recommended in scripture first (Luke 12:56-58). If not, there might be a lot of deaths in the future. I’m not saying: ‘better red, than dead,’ but diplomacy should be tried first.”

“Christians? The companion scripture in Matthew (16:3) reveals how we shouldn’t be surprised here, but how to solve the problem is from Luke  12:56-58…if a peaceful agreement is possible. It might not be.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, let those who negotiate these things act slowly and thoughtfully, not emotionally and reactionarily; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 2-20-19 Not If, But How

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-20-19

Not If, But How

What’s Happening: “In a stirring speech (at least to the Venezuelan and Cuban  immigrants) in Florida, President Donald Trump said that Maduro’s days are numbered and all options are on the table. He was also fighting the socialism of Venezuela that has produced an average weight loss of 24 pounds and an inflation rate of 10 million percent … and perhaps the socialism of many of the 2020 election Presidential Democrat party contenders (https://www.yahoo.com/news/nicolas-maduro-attacks-trump-apos-105545947.html).  Maduro’s reaction? ‘We will not make of the honorable Venezuela a Venezuela of beggars,’ Maduro said. ‘We will not accept it.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I smell armed conflict.”

Biblical Response:  “It may come to that…I certainly hope not; a lot of innocents may die. The outcome, however, is certain…what isn’t is the method of transition: peaceable…or not. With Russia, China, and, of course, Cuba backing Maduro…and most of the west backing Guaido…it is set up for a conflict. Sad, but if unchecked now it will get worse.”

“Christians? We believe that God really determines the outcome. Let me elaborate with a scripture:

‘…and He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their habitation, …’ (Acts 17:26 NASU)

Like I said, the final outcome is determined. The details…not so much…at least from our perspective.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to act wisely and promote peace…You’ve already paid the price for that; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 4-19-18 Does the Revolucion Continue?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 4-19-18

Does the Revolucion Continue?

What’s Happening:  “The announcement of a transition from the reign of the “Revolutionary” Castros (Fidel Started his reign in 1959, stepping aside for his brother, Raul, in 2008) to Diaz-Canel is supposed to occur sometime today. The big question is: Will the new leader continue the reforms of late or will Diaz-Canel be even more repressive? (https://www.yahoo.com/news/raul-castro-step-down-cuba-012055924.html). Said Prof. at American University School of Public Affairs and Latin American expert William Leogrande, ‘If the updating fails, Raul will be remembered as just one more reform communist who couldn’t force the system to change despite his best efforts,’

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I don’t care who leads, we just don’t need to send down there anymore personnel.”

Biblical Response:  “Who leads matters…a whole lot. And your reference to additional people is probably because so many have been sent home with a mysterious hearing loss (which indeed may be caused by an infrasonic sound being broadcast as a American Consulate ‘welcoming package’). Whether Diaz-Canel will lead on or lead back matters to Cubans and Americans who are praying for them.”

“Christians? While the door is cracked open…it may shut any day… churches across America should start missionary efforts in Cuba and raise up nationals (Cubans going to Cubans – you can kick non-Cubans out, but it’s harder to eject citizens). Regardless of who leads, our calling has not changed (Matt. 28:18-20). With an open-to-the-Gospel leader, however, will go much blessing. ”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, we are asking Your Holy Spirit to undergird the efforts of people we send, either from here or there; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 2-2-18 Depressed

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-2-18

Depressed

What’s Happening:  “It has been reported today that Fidel Castro Diaz- Balart took his life (committed suicide) at age 68. He spoke four languages, was a nuclear physicist, but had been treated recently for depression. He is the only child of a short marriage between Fidel and Mirta Diaz-Balart, but as Castro’s eldest son and looking a lot like the Communist dictator, he was called “Fidelito” or little Castro. He was in charge of Cuba’s nuclear program from 1980-1992 (https://www.yahoo.com/news/fidel-castros-son-commits-suicide-cuban-state-run-013151712.html). ‘Castro Diaz-Balart, who had been attended by a group of doctors for several months due to a state of profound depression, committed suicide this morning,’ the Cubadebate website said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What does all this mean?”

Biblical Response:  “Simply that power, wealth, and education do not exempt anyone from depression. There are some that will try to spin this into a conspiracy theory…or that he, like his father (who died Nov. 25, 2016) isn’t really dead… etc., but the truth remains: there, but for the grace of God, go we.”

“Christians? Can a Christian be depressed? Yes. Should a Christian be depressed? Of course not. We have everything to look forward to (Heb. 13:5). However, we still live in this world and we have to constantly consider ourselves as citizens of another kingdom (Eph. 2:19), just passing through. We may live in this world, but we don’t have to be of this world (John 15:19:17:14). Besides, in a sense, suicide is really murder as “you are not your own.” (1 Cor. 6:19)

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to exhibit the kind of selflessness that leaves how long we are here up to You, in spite of our misery…and knowing You will supply the grace; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
