Secret Things

What’s Happening: “Remember the brouhaha over Trump’s unreleased tax returns? Whether it was leaked accidentally or not, it only showed he was wealthy and took every deduction that was legal…who wouldn’t? No revelation there. Joe Biden’s and Kamala Harris’s dodge on whether they are in favor of Supreme Court packing is, however, another matter. In addition to not releasing a list of potential Supreme Court nominees – which Trump keeps requesting – Biden Thursday said he would not reveal his attitude on Supreme Court packing until after the election (https://www.yahoo.com/news/biden-says-announce-position-court-202850704.html). Vice President Pence and Senator Harris conducted a debate Wednesday in which the subject was breached. Quoting from the National Review article that appeared yesterday: ‘The American people deserve a straight answer and if you haven’t figured it out yet, the straight answer is they are going to pack the Supreme Court if they somehow win this election,’ Pence said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Are we just supposed to have faith they’ll do the right thing?”

Biblical Response:  “Great question. I guess that’s what both of them are expecting. But for a representative government…and neither of them being God…that’s kind of a heavy lift. I mean, it’s one thing to know the end from the beginning (Is. 46:10) and to choose when, how much, and to whom secret things are revealed (Deut. 29:29) if you are God, and quite another if you are not. Calling for faith if you’ve parted the Red Sea and raised the dead may be a little more reasonable than asking for it when you’ve done nothing in the past so miraculous.”

“Christians? Believing by faith may be a necessary ingredient to saving faith (Acts 16:31), but there is nothing written anywhere that says we must vote for someone that won’t reveal how they’ll act if elected.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to trust You, and anyone who has demonstrated what they’ll do…and trust no one else; in Jesus’ Name, amen.

We’ve Come a Long Way

What’s Happening: “The LGBTQIA+ community is petitioning for their issues to be brought up by the moderator of next week’s Vice Presidential debate between V.P. Mike Pence and his challenger, Senator Kamala Harris. In a letter petitioning moderator Susan Page, the activists point out that those issues were excluded from the Presidential debate last Tuesday, even though, according to their numbers, over 10 million voters are LGBTQ. They assert the House passed the Equality Act (EA) back in 2019, but it got buried in committee in the Senate, primarily because it is opposed by the administration. The EA puts sexual orientation on the non-discriminatory list of the Civil Rights Act. Also, they claim they’ll be injured as a group if the Affordable Care Act is eliminated by the Supreme Court (which is scheduled for arguments next month) (https://www.yahoo.com/news/activists-pressure-debate-moderator-to-question-pence-on-lgbtq-issues-140029823.html). Quoting from the Yahoo News article: ‘In the letter to the debate commission and Page, the coronavirus activists said the LGBTQ community was ‘in crisis’ thanks in part to the pandemic and the policies of the Trump administration.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “So I guess if you’re LGBTQ you can currently be discriminated against…how despicable! All discrimination is wrong! All segregation is wrong!””

Biblical Response:  “Really? Even discrimination and segregation of those who commit rape, murder, etc.? Isn’t that what prisons are for? Oh, you say…well, not those. So, who gets to decide who is allowed what behavior? The legislature? The courts? If you say ‘yes,’ then it was once okay to own people (slavery). Well. ‘no’ you say. That is morally wrong. That is against God’s law. I’m glad you brought Him up. It seems like the Creator should have total say over His Creation. What is acceptable and unacceptable should be His sole purview. And passing laws that agree with His law should mean a more peaceable society. And it does…presuming we all agree that there is a God…which we don’t…and there’s the basic rub. The instruction manual (the Bible) used to be the basis for most of our laws…but not any more (and the Bible’s full of prohibitions against LGBTQ: Lev. 18:22; 20:13; 1 Cor. 6:9; 1 Tim. 1:10; etc.). From this point, I could go into all the societal advantages of a Christian consensus, but the length of this blog does not allow for that. Suffice it to say, we’ve come a long way…and not necessarily in a good direction.”

“Christians? We don’t believe LGBTQ are God-glorifying in their behavior…but they are no less condemned than we (though our sin is under His blood because we acknowledge the wrongness of our behavior, accept His forgiveness and seek His help). Do Christians condemn the LGBTQ? Well, let me put it this way: We hate the sin, but love the sinner. I love the way the Living Bible renders it:

‘The good hate the badness of the wicked. The wicked hate the goodness of the good.’ (Prov. 29:27 LB)”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to not consider others hypocritically…but mercifully…remembering: ‘there, but for the grace of God, go I; in Jesus’ Name, amen.

CLARITY – 9-29-20 Choose For Yourselves

Choose For Yourselves

What’s Happening: “In an article by the Associated Press yesterday, the debate location, the six topics to be discussed, and the rules were given…and the likely fireworks expected. This first debate is expected to clearly lay out the differences in their reaction to: the Trump and Biden Records, the Supreme Court nominee that has been made, the Coronavirus, the Economy, Race and Violence in Our Cities, and the Integrity of our Elections. This election has been called the most important one in American history. Has there been an unimportant one? (https://www.yahoo.com/news/viewers-guide-trump-biden-meet-042419904.html). Quoting from the article: ‘With the election 35 days away and early votes already being cast in some states, Biden has kept a lead over the Republican President in most national polls. While debates have not significantly shaken up the election in recent years, Tuesday’s highly anticipated matchup will offer the clearest contrast yet between the two men.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “You can rest assured I’ll be tuned in!”

Biblical Response:  “You, and half the viewing world…literally! There will probably be more watchers in history…and no more clear choice…though I have to say, in my opinion, it is the lesser of two evils. Neither are paragons of virtue…neither could I point to as a sterling example of character…but, then again, neither am I…(of course, I’m not running for President of the leading country of the free world, either).  I guess I’ll have to make my decision based on whom I think will be the best for the country. That’s clear to me…and hopefully is for you, too.  Without revealing my vote, let me say, if you’re registered to vote it is your obligation to choose:

“‘If it is  disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the river, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.’ (Josh. 24:15 NASU)”

“Self-government is not for cowards…it is hard. It calls for an informed electorate (watching or reading the news); staying up on the issues and the candidates’ stands (watching the debates and listening to the commentary afterwards); and lots of prayer and listening, Few are really fully prepared…but a choice will be made.”

“Christians? Oh, we believe in choosing…He even knows how we’ll choose. What we do after the choice…well that’s a subject for another day…after November 3rd.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to choose wisely, not as fools (Eph. 5:15); in Jesus’ Name, amen.

CLARITY – 6-27-19 Things Not Up For Debate

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -6-27-19

Things Not Up For Debate

What’s Happening: “Last night (10 more tonight), ten candidates for the Democrat nomination for President in 2020 faced off in a debate that was primarily about how each would handle healthcare and marred by the media’s miscues. President Trump, tweeted derision for the media. He was aboard Air Force One headed to the G-20 summit. Other topics included: hispanic influence (3 spoke some in Spanish), women’s influence (3 more women tonight) – including reproductive rights, immigration, and, of course, Trump (https://www.yahoo.com/news/5-key-moments-in-the-first-democratic-debate-040824195.html).  Opining about single-payer healthcare, Warren said, ‘There are a lot of politicians who say it’s just not possible, we just can’t do it, have a lot of political reasons for this. What they’re really telling you is they just won’t fight for it. Well, health care is a basic human right and I will fight for basic human rights.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Looks to be a fight for who can give the most away!””

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, it remains to be seen how many average Americans will buy into these utopian dreams.Socialism sounds good…but, this side of heaven, what socialists promise just can’t be paid for. Besides, it makes a fundamental error of assumption: that Man is basically good…which he isn’t (Is. 53:6; Rom. 3:23). The only reason capitalism works is that it operates on the correct assumption: that Man is basically bad (see scriptures, above). Capitalism rewards greed, avarice, and envy…and I’m not saying these are good, but that’s what Jesus came to deal with. Selflessness, treating others as better than yourself (Phil. 2:3), being satisfied with what you have been provided…these are unnatural motivations. Which is why a transformation is necessary. This may be up for debate on the stage of this world, but not the next.”

“Christians? It’s great to operate with this world as if everybody is already transformed. The only problem? They aren’t. You have to treat people the way they are, not the way you want them to be.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to see through Your eyes…happy that some have embraced the truth…happy that others will embrace the truth…but not naive in the interim; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
