CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 11-7-18

Waxes and Wanes

What’s Happening: “Much more was decided yesterday than who won the House, Senate or Governor’s seats (BTW, the House was taken by the Dems…investigate or legislate?; that is the question…the Republicans increased their hold on the Senate…and  the Republicans won in crucial gubernatorial races in Ohio, Florida, and Missouri…Abrams is still not conceding in Georgia). Marijuana usage (medical or recreational…or both – Michigan became the 10th state to legalize recreational marijuana), Felons getting the vote (they did…at least in Florida), and a plethora of state questions, bond issues, etc. – all of which are of local concern) were decided too (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2018/11/06/election-results-2018-florida-votes-restore-felons-voting-rights/1895272002/).

Some gained and are celebrating, some lost and are licking their wounds (or planning their move elsewhere). All in all, the real winners are the ad agencies who collected on the most expensive races ever. It’s like my Dad said, “There are two winners in every lawsuit…and both of them are attorneys.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “I’ll bet Donald Trump is quaking in his boots!”

Biblical Response:  “Probably not…don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect the Democratically controlled House to do anything but investigate…but this only helps Trump in 2020. He plays the long game. Of course, it will distract him from his agenda…which may be all the Dems want to do. Will the wall get built? Probably not…the Republicans need a campaign issue in 2020. And, in spite of predictions and Chicken Little’s concerns, the sky will not fall.”

Christians? Regardless of your politics, you should be happy that there was such great voter turnout (Prov. 24:11-12; Mark 10:46-49). Did our side win? It depends on to whom you talk. Still, Edmund Burke was right, ‘The only necessary for evil to triumph, is for good men to do nothing’ (at least John F. Kennedy attributed that remark to him).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to accept the results…and redouble our efforts where appropriate. Perhaps we cannot say with Will Rogers, ‘I never met a man I didn’t like,’ but perhaps we can say, ‘I never met a man I couldn’t pray for;’…and I do; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 2-13-18 Dream On

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-13-18

Dream On

What’s Happening:  “The immigration deal that President Trump has proposed (1.8 million  ‘Dreamers’ on path to citizenship + 25 billion in border protection + end to immigration lottery + end to chain migration) doesn’t sit well with Republicans or Democrats. Whether enough of either party is willing to hold their nose and vote for it remains to be seen – reminds me of budget (https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-pushes-immigration-deal-says-last-chance-pass-111634053–politics.html). ‘”Wouldn’t it be great if we could finally, after so many years, solve the DACA puzzle,” Trump tweeted, ’This will be our last chance, there will never be another opportunity! March 5th.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What are those brought here by parents to do?”

Biblical Response:  “Gee, they could apply legally…as long as this deal is approved it would really be a plus for them to get citizenship out of the deal…and it may happen. I guess we’ll know by March 5th…or whenever the courts decide. I appreciate that the ‘Dreamers’ were brought here through no fault of their own…and this deal provides a path to citizenship for them (800,000) and their parents (1,000,000); This is what Trump is willing to concede if he can only get the rest mentioned above.”

“Christians? Of course, we’re all here through no fault of our own (did we choose where we were born?). Here’s what I propose: at your 18th birthday (when your majority rights kick in – you are allowed to make your own decision as a legal adult), you can choose any country of the world in which to apply for citizenship; until accepted you’ll be from the country of your birth by default;  you have to decide by your 19th birthday. Sounds reasonable to me. As Christians we’re citizens by adoption, anyway (Eph. 2:18-19). I guess that makes us all ‘Dreamers.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, let us realize we’re all here by someone grace; therefore we should, as recipients of grace, show grace; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 2-3-18 Yawn…Is Anybody Surprised?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-3-18

Yawn…Is Anybody Surprised?

What’s Happening:  “The memo from Nunes is released…without redactions…to the Democrats’ chagrin (and the FBI & DOJ) and the Republicans’ glee. It establishes the Hillary Campaign and the DNC as the funders of the dossier, and the dossier as the primary reason the FISA Court approved wiretapping Gates (to be of the few to read the full text of the memo, go to the link) (https://www.axios.com/read-nunes-memo-fbi-doj-fisa-mueller-7fb8bcb7-1f18-4294-aa95-628d2f67bcdf.html). Rep. Devin Nunes: ‘The Committee has discovered serious violations of the public trust, and the American people have a right to know when officials in crucial institutions are abusing their authority for political purposes.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Perhaps I can see why the swamp must be drained.”

Biblical Response:  “You think?! George Washington, in his farewell address, warned of party factionism (I’m a registered independent). It’s a big deal to go against the status quo (keeping things the way they’ve always been). It’s an even bigger deal to vote differently. Sure, we pay lip service to ‘draining the swamp.’ but once we get into the voting booth, we pull the lever the way we always have. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.”

“Christians? We’re not immune to insanity, either. The Scripture has lain out a clear path for us (Is. 55:8-9; Prov. 3:5-6). Taking that path, however, requires a death to self, but any other path is unthinkable (Prov. 16:25). Should we just not vote? Perhaps that’s why we’re in this mess in the first place.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to realize that the name ‘Christian’ carries stern responsibilities; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent

CLARITY – 1-20-18 The Blame Game Strikes Again

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-20-18

The Blame Game Strikes Again

What’s Happening:  “The Republicans call it the ‘Schumer Shutdown’ (winning the alliteration game – they’ve actually got a website: SchumerShutdown.com), while the Democrats lay the blame squarely on the Republicans because, they say, that they are completely in charge having the White House, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Of course, they say nothing when it’s pointed out that nothing can pass the Senate now without a super-majority (https://www.ndtv.com/world-news/us-government-shuts-down-as-midnight-deadline-passes-live-updates-1802448). The best comment was probably made by Vice President Mike Pence: ‘It’s disappointing to every American that Democrats in the Senate would shutdown the government when we have troops in harm’s way.’”

Knee-jerk Response: “Don’t we (the taxpayers) win anytime government workers have to stay home without pay?”

Biblical Response:  “Perhaps…I mean, I do understand the sentiment…though those doing without a paycheck might disagree. Too bad the Congress’ paychecks are not tied to their performance. I think we should propose a Balanced Budget Amendment – when we have a surplus, Congress gets a bonus…when we have a deficit, they get no pay…of course, that just makes too much sense.”

“Will the shutdown really accomplish anything? Probably not. It’ll probably be short-lived. Although there appears to be intractable differences, both sides know this is an election year.”

“Christians? We are to be fiscally responsible (Rom. 13:8), yet we are also to be merciful (Rom. 11;32). Surely, there’s a balance there somewhere.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to find the balance between mercy and responsibility; isn’t Your provision both? In Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
