A Biblical Response to Current Events – 6-11-18
Lost and Found
What’s Happening: “After disappearing from the Air Force for thirty-five years, Captain William Howard Hughes, Jr. was found living under a fake identity in California by a government investigator. Although he had a top security clearance, he said he did not leak any secrets. He was single and 33 when he left because he claimed he was depressed about his Air Force life. He was captured and is being held on charges of desertion (https://www.yahoo.com/news/missing-air-force-officer-found-35-years-later-182305573.html). ‘Hughes was last seen withdrawing more than $28,000 in Albuquerque in the summer of 1983 after returning from a two-week vacation in Europe,’ a report reads.
Knee-Jerk Response: “Leave the man alone! If he’d wanted to be found, he’d wouldn’t have taken a false identity!”
Biblical Response: “The only trouble with that philosophy is that life creates obligations…whether you’re a schoolteacher, a stay-at-home mom or dad, or a Captain in the Air Force, it doesn’t matter. Your serving of America or your kids means a certain degree of loyalty and performance. If you can’t comply with either, you shouldn’t accept the position.”
“Christians? Claiming that you’re a Christian and not accepting the obligations of self-sacrifice and service is hypocritical and selfish. Unfortunately, there may be some who are surprised at the judgment thinking after they had their ‘fire insurance’ they were done. Although good works don’t produce salvation, they do prove it.”
Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray: “Heavenly Father, help us to be sad at our ‘lost’ condition and happy at being ‘found’…so happy that we can’t wait to help someone else get ‘found;’in Jesus’ Name, amen.” © Alan E.Sargent
