A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-26-18

The Trouble with Tea Leaves

What’s Happening:  “California’s high-profile Democratic Congressman, Dianne Feinstein, failed to get her state party’s endorsement when they only voted to endorse by 54% (60% is required). Her leading opponent, State Senate Leader Kevin de Leon, took this as the party’s departure from the aging Feinstein’s centrist leanings (she’ll be 85 this year). His progressive agenda supports many things over which Feinstein has equivocated (  Leon quipped, ‘We all deserve a leader who will take our climate action to Washington, and will fight each and every day to protect our human and civil rights, our immigrant families and Dreamers, champion universal health care and create good paying middle class jobs.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “That’s out in California…why should I care?”

Biblical Response:  “Often, as California goes, so goes the nation…or so they think (the middle of the country may beg to differ); still, they are quite influential. The trouble with reading tea leaves (or any kind of predictability method) is their changing nature. The Democratic Party was not so progressive until the popularity of Bernie Sanders. Maybe Millenials will rule the day…maybe not. The fickleness of the electorate in 2016 had the polls all wrong…or maybe the predictions were just wrong.”

“Christians? Although God was not surprised that Trump won, we do not need to be fatalists: since everything is predetermined, we can just relax. God knows the future, make no mistake (Is, 46:10), but He counts on us being the salt and light {Matt. 5:13-14). We are not to believe any prognosticator, but trust in God’s Word (Ps. 119).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to find the energy and enthusiasm to make the difference in this world we are supposed to…and trust ourselves only to You; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
