CLARITY – 2-9-19 Justice

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-9-19

What’s Happening: “The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision vacated the stay of execution granted by a lower court (because of religious objections) Thursday in the Alabama lethal injection of Muslim Domineque Ray, his Imam in an adjacent room. He was executed for the brutal stabbing and raping of 15-year-old Tiffany Harville in 1994. ( ‘”Here, Ray has put forward a powerful claim that his religious rights will be violated at the moment the State puts him to death,’ Justice Kagan wrote dissenting. ‘The Eleventh Circuit wanted to hear that claim in full. Instead, this Court short-circuits that ordinary process — and itself rejects the claim with little briefing and no argument — just so the State can meet its preferred execution date.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “It’s wrong to impose the death penalty anyway..”

Biblical Response:  “Not in Alabama…and 29 other states, the U.S. Govt. or the U.S. military. What you really mean is morally wrong, not legally wrong. Apparently, that’s for the courts to decide. And the trend has been away from it. Still, that’s not the real question. The real question, legally or morally, does man have the right to take life for life? If not, is ‘life without the possibility of parole’ sufficient deterrent? Is it ‘cruel and unusual?’Of course, none of these questions was the subject of lower court rulings or the Supreme Court’s. Rather, they argued over whether this Muslim’s Constitutional, 1st Amendment, rights had been violated.”

“Christians? Do we believe in life for life? (Ex. 21:23) The Old Testament is unequivocal about it. Of course, you need to delineate between temporal life and eternal life. Then there’s the whole subject of substitutionary death and final justice to consider.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be students of the Word…to apply it temporally AND eternally; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
