CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -9-2-19

Liars Contest

What’s Happening: “Wow! This is, no doubt, the most scathing and well-documented op-ed piece I’ve ever read. National Review printed an article about Joe Biden and the other leading contenders for the Democrat nomination for President in 2020 that leaves the reader (hopefully) despairing. That we might not be despairing is an even worse prospect. Perhaps, as they contend, we have arrived at a place in our history where the voting public thinks the truth is irrelevant (https://www.yahoo.com/news/talk-joe-biden-103028716.html). Quoting the Washington Post,  excoriating Biden over a recent dramatic campaign speech: ‘Biden got the time period, the location, the heroic act, the type of medal, the military branch and the rank of the recipient wrong, as well as his own role in the ceremony.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “You’re not telling me anything I don’t know already…I don’t think I’m going to vote.”

Biblical Response:  “Unfortunately, too many people are thinking that way. However, the way to solve the lack of integrity is MORE integrity…not just throwing your hands up in disgust. Believe me, many are tempted to do the same thing…or accept the lesser of two evils…with a clothespin firmly in place! Is the path to restoration easy? Heck no. It may even take a generation or two. But unless, in spite of personal cost, more men and women of uncompromising integrity run, we’ll continue to have nothing from which to choose. The Bible has much to say about the fate of liars (Rev. 21:8; etc.), and lies are a direct violation of the Ten Commandments (# 9 – Ex. 20:16). Still, everybody’s done it (Is. 53:6; Rom. 3:23). That’s why everybody needs a Savior (Rom. 10:9-10).

Of course, we also need servant-leaders who are going to take our trust seriously and set good examples (1 Pet 5:2-4). From parents to pastors to Representatives, Senators and even the Vice President and President, we must have leaders of integrity or we will continue  to wander…and be judged for where we arrive. That is why we are culpable in this choice.

“Christians? As goes the shepherd, so goes the flock. We believe in choosing wisely. In Joshua 24:15 we are told we must choose the Lord, but what if the leaders don’t even acknowledge Him truthfully? Time to pray…and serve…is the Lord calling you?”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, as the entrance to the Air Force Academy said (when I was a cadet there): “Bring us men to match our mountains…”…to which I’ll add…”and women…”; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events -6-20-19

Head Turning

What’s Happening: “Former Vice President and 2020 Presidential hopeful, Joe Biden, would not criticise rich donors at a fund-raiser Wednesday. His competitors for the Democrat nomination have threatened the well-heeled with new taxes and have heaped blame on the ‘wealthy 1%’for much of what they say is the middle class’s plight. Joe Biden, however, wants to cultivate relationships with them saying they are just as patriotic as others (https://www.yahoo.com/news/biden-tells-elite-donors-doesnt-005357188.html). ‘Remember, I got in trouble with some of the people on my team, on the Democratic side, because I said, you know, what I’ve found is rich people are just as patriotic as poor people. Not a joke. I mean, we may not want to demonize anybody who’s made money,…’ said Biden.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “It’s convenient to change your tune when it suits you. I guess that’s politics.”

Biblical Response:  “Sad, isn’t it? And we are supposed to pick among these folks our next leaders?! As long as we reward those who are the most adept at telling people what they want to hear…with a straight face…we will continue to get what we deserve: an opportunistic politician (we used to call them ‘liars’, but that’s not politically correct). To have your head turned this way, then that…would give some people whiplash. But not politicians, they only develop their neck muscles.

You can’t be friends with everybody (1 John 2:15-16). If you are friends with one, you make enemies of the other…except for politicians, of course…enemies seldom vote for you. I said seldom, because occasionally (read ‘often’) we have to pick the lesser of two evils.

“Christians? Discernment is just not possible unless you’re tuned into God’s Spirit. (Rom. 8:6-9). Maybe that’s why there’s still wars… As I’ve said before, there will never be peace on earth until the Prince of Peace rules in the heart of every man.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to choose wisely what turns our head…and help us to elect true servants; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 1-23-19 Most Quoted

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 1-23-19

Most Quoted

What’s Happening: “Judge Paul Ridgeway refused to certify that the North Carolinian Republican Representative was elected in the last contested race of 2018. Mark Harris was supposedly elected by a close 905-vote margin (though there is some dispute that third parties may have collected and submitted some Absentee Ballots – there is an investigation into this and the result is what the judge awaits). The opposition contests the results of the election (https://www.yahoo.com/news/judge-rejects-republicans-bid-certified-winner-north-carolina-181426188.html).’”Certification is not appropriate until the investigation into the protest is concluded by final decision,” Judge Ridgeway said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Are we still quibbling over 2018?!”

Biblical Response:  “Yes, and the North Carolina constituency deserves the person they truly selected…so getting it right IS important. Judging whether Mark Harris (or his competitor) was elected is what Judge Ridgeway has been charged to certify, though there are many who would shrink back from that task. In fact, the most quoted verse in the Bible is: “Judge not…” (from Matt. 7:1). Few people quote the rest of the verse, and the first parts’ context: “…that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. (Matt. 7:1-2 KJV). The verse is not saying we are not to judge, but to not judge HYPOCRITICALLY, In fact, we are called to judge (1 Cor. 6:3).”

“Christians? We make judgments everyday (should we buy this product or that… Let’s compare prices and ingredients… we contemplate). Justice may be blind, but every jury is asked to weigh the evidence and make a JUDGEMENT…with their eyes and ears open. Knowing this, should make us pray for our judges.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us not to judge too hastily or hypocritically…and to pray for those who judge…and not to shrink back from that job, if selected; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 10-26-18 Confidence?

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 10-26-18

Confidence?

What’s Happening: “Eleven days out from the midterms and the rallies seem to exude confidence…at least more than was present in 2016. What’s at stake? Not just the fates of the over 450 legislators who are running; who is in control – who runs the House and Senate, whether or not impeachment proceedings begin, whether or not we have a porous southern border, etc. – these are the true realities. But the Republicans seem to be confident (https://www.politico.com/story/2018/10/26/trump-midterm-campaign-rallies-941584). We’ll see. ‘Who believes the polls? I have not been part of a poll in 40 years,’ said Bruce Troutwine, 62, an attendee at a Trump rally in Montana last week.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Blue Wave or Red Wave, who cares?”

Biblical Response:  “Obviously you’re not voting. It’s mysterious to me when the election determines how we shall live at least for the next two years, that anyone having to live by that decision would voluntarily not be a part of it! Few people in this world get to have the level of control we do – you don’t see a caravan storming the Chinese or Russian border – yet the complacency is huge…and mind-boggling!”

“Christians? Trusting anyone with the right to choose their own leadership may assume too much (Rom. 3:23; Is. 55:8-9). As John Adams once said:

‘Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.’”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, let us never be so confident as a people that our assumptions become the foundation of our demise; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 9-15-18 It’s Dangerous Alright

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 9-15-18

It’s Dangerous Alright

What’s Happening:  “Former President Barack Hussein Obama, stumping for a Democratic slate of candidates in Ohio, said it would be ‘dangerous’ not to vote in November. Republicans agreed…but want their candidates to be the beneficiaries of an activated electorate (https://www.yahoo.com/news/obama-stump-cordray-other-democrats-ohio-visit-101347004.html). ‘2016 is over, but President Obama continues to dismiss the millions of voters across Ohio who rejected a continuation of his policies in favor of President Trump’s plan for historic tax cuts, new jobs and soaring economic growth,” Mandi Merritt, Ohio spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee, said.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Isn’t it just a shouting match?”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah, or a ‘Tweeting match…and we know who’ll win that. Who turns out, Democrats or Republicans, will likely determine the outcome of the elections in November. And it should. This is what elected representative government is all about. We have to live by the laws these folks legislate. Scary, huh? If your guy or gal is running, then you’d better show up…if you don’t know who’s running and what he or she stands for,,.then don’t complain when inauguration time comes around.”

“Christians? Everybody wants Christian laws, no Christian wants to run. There’s something wrong with this picture. Things don’t get better by themselves. You might actually have to inconvenience yourself. Sacrifice has always been the cost of progress (1 Tim. 2:6).”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to see the danger of inaction…and the blessing of sacrifice; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-30-18 It’s Anybody’s Guess

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-30-18

It’s Anybody’s Guess

What’s Happening:  “100 days out and it still depends on whom you talk to…blue ripple or red (nobody’s talking wave). What’s at stake? Only the economy, the Supreme Court, immigration policy, our relationship with Iran, the denuclearization of North Korea, etc. If you think it’s hard for the Congress to get anything done now, just wait until the Executive branch and the Legislative branch are of differing parties! Right now, it looks amazingly like November of 2016 (http://thehill.com/opinion/campaign/399399-buckle-your-seatbelts-for-100-days-of-political-drama-before-midterms).  Quoting the above article by Lloyd green, ‘Already, 2020 Democratic hopefuls, such as Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand and Bernie Sanders have embraced the siren song of abolishing or reexamining ICE. If their views become dominant between now and November, the Republicans may yet snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “What does it really matter, anyway?”

Biblical Response:  “Did you not pay attention to what I said about what is at stake? This election may be the most pivotal one since…since…the last one. Actually. the most accurate predictor-poll may be the “Right Track-Wrong Track”poll. Most folks like the track we’re on.

“Christians? Although I’m not a fatalist (someone who believes the die is already cast – that we can’t affect an inevitable future), the Scriptures do talk about God determining who’s in charge (Prov. 16:9, 33) and where the king’s focus shall be (Prov. 21:1). Sure, He may know what decision we’ll make, but what has that got to do with free will? When you put time in the mix, it changes everything!”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to be proactive, regardless of our political bent; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-24-18 Knowledge is Power

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-24-18

Knowledge is Power

What’s Happening:  “The startling truth is that Trump Haters are just getting started. The even more startling truth (to them) is that they can win…truly knowledge is power, but being deceived into thinking you have the upper hand when that premise is itself built on ;lies…well, it’s like believing your own hype…that you might really win if you just keep fighting  (https://amgreatness.com/2018/07/23/just-how-far-will-the-left-go/?utm_source=Hoover+Daily+Report&utm_campaign=d9920cc448-HDR_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_21b1edff3c-d9920cc448-73112785). ‘There was no honeymoon for the unlikely winner of the 2016 election. Progressives have in succession tried to sue to overturn Trump’s victory using several different approaches. First on the bogus claim of fraudulent voting machines. Then they sought to subvert the Electoral College by bullying electors into renouncing their respective states’ votes,’ the above article by Victor Davis Hanson begins.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “They’ve done everything but try an actual assassination attempt.”

Biblical Response:  “Yep, and I wouldn’t be surprised if planning for an attempt was already underway. The left is frustrated, and if the Maxine Waters and the abolish-ICErs get their way….”

“Christians? Keep your eyes and ears open. To change an old quote by Lord Acton:  Power corrupts, and absolute power is only held by the One Who knows everything. Absolute corruption comes those who think they know everything. There are two agendas at work in the world (John 10:10) and, although we are assured ultimate victory, there might just be some damage along the way….60 million voices cry for justice.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, while we want Your justice…we seek Your mercy; take into consideration Your love for Mankind…the very love that motivated the giving of Your Son: in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 7-17-18 Controlling the Narrative

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 7-17-18

Controlling the Narrative

What’s Happening:  “The news is abuzz about what Trump said about our intelligence services…that he believes Putin over them…that he believes maybe Russia didn’t meddle in the the 2016 election…that his ego is so big that he couldn’t see past the ‘witch hunt’ of the Mueller probe and even doubted the indictment of the twelve Russian spies…and that’s the conservatives (https://www.dailywire.com/news/33123/trump-slams-his-own-intelligence-agencies-insists-ben-shapiro?utm_source=cnemail&utm_medium=email&utm_content=071718-news&utm_campaign=position1). But perhaps he’s just taking a cue from the liberal playbook and controlling the narrative. Even conservative Allen West tweeted: ‘There are those who say you do not go into such a summit to embarrass, or confront. I say you do not sit with the devil and offer him something cool to drink.’ Perhaps a better saying is: You don’t confront a snake about the viciousness of his bite!’”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “Dumb like a fox?”

Biblical Response:  “Yeah…kind of. I mean, you know what the liberals are going to say…whatever you say they are going to find fault with it. And you know how everyone believes (including Putin) about the size of your ego…say something that will give Putin pause. If you want to charm a tyrannical despot (or a snake), you can’t start by making accusations, however true they may be. Again…controlling the narrative..”

“Christians? Controlling the narrative is what the Sermon on the Mount was all about (Matt. 5-7). Read how many times Jesus said what was written in the law, then went on to say ‘But I say…’ or started his edicts with a ‘But…’ (Matt. 5:32,37,39,44; 6;3,6,7,15,17,23, 27, 33). I’m not saying President Trump is so wise or does not have a huge ego, I’m just say that controlling the narrative determines the direction of conversation…you attract more bees with sugar than with vinegar.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, help us to gain victory over the enemy by being wise as serpents and gentle as doves (Matt. 10:16); in Jesus’ Name, amen.”

CLARITY – 2-20-18 Who’s Indicted…Who’s Not

CLARITY

A Biblical Response to Current Events – 2-20-18

Who’s Indicted…Who’s Not

What’s Happening:  “Announced by the Deputy Attorney General, Rod Rosenstein, Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller just indicted 13 Russians and 3 Russian entities for their involvement trying to influence the 2016 elections. Neither Trump, nor any of his campaign staff have been indicted. We can’t say whether or not Mueller s done with the investigation (https://www.npr.org/2018/02/17/586825413/the-russia-investigations-reading-into-mueller-s-latest-indictments). Although President Trump claims this vindicates him, the investigation is likely to continue.”

Knee-Jerk Response:  “There are a lot of people who think this will be bigger than Watergate.”

Biblical Response:  “And they might be right, but to date no one has proven there was any collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russians. Did the Russians try to meddle in our elections? Probably, though there is no indication they were successful. (But they’ve tried in every election – what we need to be wary of are the protests they have financed since the election). Is Trump out of the woods? Not yet (at least if the Trump-haters have anything to say).”

“Christians? Truth is often discoverable…but not often convenient. We are for the truth (John 8:32), but also for the release of the truth in a slow and discreet manner. We’d probably all have apoplexy if everything God knows were revealed in an instant. I’m for telling what needs to be told…WHEN IT NEEDS TO BE TOLD. Good advice for the eternal…and the temporal.”

Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray:  “Heavenly Father, please consider the frailty of our nature, the excitability of our emotions, and our true need to know when revealing the truth; in  Jesus’ Name, amen.”   © Alan E.Sargent
