A Biblical Response to Current Events -9-2-19
What’s Happening: “Wow! This is, no doubt, the most scathing and well-documented op-ed piece I’ve ever read. National Review printed an article about Joe Biden and the other leading contenders for the Democrat nomination for President in 2020 that leaves the reader (hopefully) despairing. That we might not be despairing is an even worse prospect. Perhaps, as they contend, we have arrived at a place in our history where the voting public thinks the truth is irrelevant (https://www.yahoo.com/news/talk-joe-biden-103028716.html). Quoting the Washington Post, excoriating Biden over a recent dramatic campaign speech: ‘Biden got the time period, the location, the heroic act, the type of medal, the military branch and the rank of the recipient wrong, as well as his own role in the ceremony.’”
Knee-Jerk Response: “You’re not telling me anything I don’t know already…I don’t think I’m going to vote.”
Biblical Response: “Unfortunately, too many people are thinking that way. However, the way to solve the lack of integrity is MORE integrity…not just throwing your hands up in disgust. Believe me, many are tempted to do the same thing…or accept the lesser of two evils…with a clothespin firmly in place! Is the path to restoration easy? Heck no. It may even take a generation or two. But unless, in spite of personal cost, more men and women of uncompromising integrity run, we’ll continue to have nothing from which to choose. The Bible has much to say about the fate of liars (Rev. 21:8; etc.), and lies are a direct violation of the Ten Commandments (# 9 – Ex. 20:16). Still, everybody’s done it (Is. 53:6; Rom. 3:23). That’s why everybody needs a Savior (Rom. 10:9-10).
Of course, we also need servant-leaders who are going to take our trust seriously and set good examples (1 Pet 5:2-4). From parents to pastors to Representatives, Senators and even the Vice President and President, we must have leaders of integrity or we will continue to wander…and be judged for where we arrive. That is why we are culpable in this choice.
“Christians? As goes the shepherd, so goes the flock. We believe in choosing wisely. In Joshua 24:15 we are told we must choose the Lord, but what if the leaders don’t even acknowledge Him truthfully? Time to pray…and serve…is the Lord calling you?”
Here’s a Prayer You Can Pray: “Heavenly Father, as the entrance to the Air Force Academy said (when I was a cadet there): “Bring us men to match our mountains…”…to which I’ll add…”and women…”; in Jesus’ Name, amen.”
